EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Central Pennsylvania .. Friends of Jazz We thank John Traynor of the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center for providing us with a great space for . our second Fall Concert with Harry Allen & Hilary Gardner on October 2nd.. The Capital Room was 5721 Jonestown Road filled with great sounds and smiling faces as the group played many standards and jazz favorites with Harrisburg PA 17112 Harry’s robust tenor sound at the helm. Hillary proved to be an exceptional vocalist who has a great . TEL: 717-540-1010 respect for the lyrics and the melody with an innate sense of swing. The pianist, Rossano Sportiello, was . a real standout as well, demonstrating stride and other traditional piano techniques of the highest order. WEB: The room also got rave reviews from the audience of over 200 fans - some even said it reminded them of www.friendsofjazz.org the legendary Baltimore venue, the Famous Ballroom. The Left Bank Jazz Society ran Sunday afternoon EMAIL: [email protected] jazz concerts weekly at the Ballroom in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s and it was that space that inspired the founding of the Central PA Friends of Jazz. Most of our early events occurred in a similar cabaret setting arranged in Central PA hotel ballrooms - the Penn Harris, the Sheraton Union Deposit, and the Steve Rudolph Hilton Harrisburg all provided that sense of comfort for many years of our monthly presentations and Executive Director Festivals. We have already arranged to return to the Capital Room on April 30th (artists to be arranged) . Sheila Ross I’m sure we will be back at HMAC for many concerts and special events to come. HMAC is now Office Manager hosting Friday Happy Hour jazz events in their fine restaurant - The Kitchen - check the calendar for the list of artists appearing (page 6 of this issue). . CPFJ Board of Directors: I am forever grateful to our Volunteer Coordinator, Leslie Beamer, for arranging schedules for all of our . events in the past 5 years - she is retiring from her duties with CPFJ at the end of this year. It was a real luxury to know that whatever task she was given would be completed on time and done to perfection. Dr. William Anderson We will be needing someone to take over Leslie’s duties - if you are interested, please see the job description on page 8 of this issue. (Membership) . Paul Bratcher Please support all of the great artist’s appearances coming up on our Fall and Spring schedules - without (President) CPFJ most of them would never be able to be heard live in Central PA. If you love the music and want Oliver Fairley it to be available locally, we need you to come out and support the cause - this goes for CPFJ events as (Youth Committee Chair) well as concerts in other venues and includes our own area artists’ appearances in clubs and other venues. The fan base for jazz internationally is currently at a low point, so be sure to tell your friends Dr. Paul Haidet and invite them to come along - they won’t hear better music anywhere in the world and they will enjoy (Newsletter) seeing the unique venues and meeting all of the interesting people who frequent jazz performances. Mary Heltzel . (Marketing ) We will be participating in the Lancaster County Extraordinary Give - a24-hour giving marathon held Mark Hunsberger on Nov. 18th that benefits more than 425 local organizations. Every dollar donated at ExtraGive.org on November 18 will be augmented by $300,000 from the Lancaster County Community Foundation, (Treasurer) Rodgers & Associates, and our community partners to support the causes you care about. Visit Waverly Parker extragive.org to donate (Festival) . Mark Swartzbaugh Please visit our website to read The ViBE, and check out videos of upcoming artists and events - we try to keep the site looking good, interesting, and up to date. (Marketing) . Keith Thomas We are currently in the process of opening a store at our office location. If you have any CDs or LPs (Vice President & Concessions) that are in great shape that you want to donate for a tax write off, please let us know. We will soon be Tim Thompson selling some of these items on Ebay as well. (Youth Committee) Tim Warfield, Jr. As always, we hope you will share some of your time and help us by volunteering - there are many ways you can help the Friends of Jazz - PLEASE CALL! (Artistic Director) . . For the second month in a row, I must report some sad news - Youth Band Director: William Dann Stueber, (Danny Stuber) 63, of Harrisburg, passed Ron Waters away on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at his home Danny was a pianist, . vocalist, and composer - a very soulful musician who wrote and recorded The ViBE many songs, releasing the CD "Don't Be Blue". Danny performed Steve Rudolph - Editor in various area bands as well as his own trio, and shared the stage with Sheila Ross - Contributing Editor many talented musicians: the City Rhythm Band, Octagon Jazz Band, Maxwell, and the Dave Wilson/Danny Stuber "Smooth" Jazz Group. Paul Haidet - Contributing Editor . He performed often with the late Sammy Banks who died last month - Volunteer Coordinator encouraging Sam to come out and play despite Sam’s advanced age. Leslie Beamer Danny was a local favorite performing in places such as Crawdaddy's, Hotel Hershey’s Iberian Lounge, Hollywood Casino, Atlantic City Casinos, and various other locations and events throughout Central PA and the East Coast. He was also a Musician Partner of the Central PA Friends of Jazz and a frequent performer at our Picnics and Festival events. We had asked him to play at this year’s Picnic, but he declined stating that he was dealing with some health issues. He was a great friend to fans and musicians alike and we will all miss his positive attitude and inspiration....our sympathies to his family... r.i.p. . Support JAZZ - Thanks to all for your continuing support! . the Music of Freedom! Steve Rudolph, Executive Director, CPFJ

THANKS TO ALL OF OUR DONORS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT! 3 3. 2016 FALL CONCERT SERIES FINALE - NOV. 27 - PAT MARTINO! We close our 36th Concert Season at 3p.m. on November 27th with a true jazz legend - guitarist Pat Martino. Pat’s storied career has included recordings with Chick Corea, , Eric Kloss, Groove Holmes & Jack MacDuff and he has been at the forefront of the jazz guitar world since the mid-60’s. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in all music. We return to the beautiful brewery and distillery, Wyndridge Farm, just outside of York, PA, for this performance with Pat’s exciting Trio. Pat began playing professionally in 1961. He has performed with a wide variety of artists including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Richard Groove Holmes, John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, Chick Corea, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Stanley Clark, Eric Kloss, Trudy Pitts, Willis Jackson, Lloyd Price, Woody Herman, Chuck Israels, Charles Earland, Barry Miles and Joe Pesci. Since 1967, Pat has been touring as a leader. He has been a Recording Artist for Vanguard, Prestige, Warner Brothers, Muse, Columbia, King, Paddlewheel, Evidence, Sony, 32 Jazz, High Note, Milestone, Polydor, Concord, Fantasy, House of Blues, Mythos, Mainstream, Cobblestone, Atlantic and, most currently, Blue Note Records. Pat has given Guitar and Music Therapy Seminars, Clinics and Master Classes throughout the world, at locations including North Texas State University, G.I.T., Berklee College (Boston and Perugia, Italy), Duquesne University, and many others. Today, he lives in Philadelphia and is adjunct faculty at the University of the Arts. Renowned organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Carmen Intorre will accompany Pat’s performance.

Martino had been performing since the early 1960s until an aneurysm in 1980 left him with amnesia and no recollection or knowledge of his career or how to play the very instrument that made him successful. When the anesthesia wore off, Pat Martino looked up hazily at his parents and his doctors. and tried to piece together any memory of his life. One of the greatest guitarists in jazz. Martino had suffered a severe brain aneurysm and underwent surgery after being told that his condition could be terminal. After his operations he could remember almost nothing. He barely recognized his parents. and had no memory of his guitar or his career. He remembers feeling as if he had been "dropped cold, empty, neutral, cleansed...naked." . In the following months. Martino made a remarkable recovery. Through intensive study of his own historic recordings, and with the help of computer technology, Pat managed to reverse his memory loss and return to form on his instrument. His past recordings eventually became "an old friend, a spiritual experience which remained beautiful and honest." This recovery fits in perfectly with Pat's illustrious personal history. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in music. He embodies thoughtful energy and soul. . Born Pat Azzara in Philadelphia in 1944, he was first exposed to jazz through his father, Carmen "Mickey" Azzara, who sang in local clubs and briefly studied guitar with Eddie Lang. He took Pat to all the city's hot-spots to hear and meet Wes Montgomery and other musical giants. "I have always admired my father and have wanted to impress him. As a result, it forced me to get serious with my creative powers." . He began playing guitar when he was twelve years old. and left school in tenth grade to devote himself to music. During Visits to his music teacher Dennis Sandole, Pat often ran into another gifted student, John Coltrane, who would treat the youngster to hot chocolate as they talked about music. . Besides first-hand encounters with `Trane and Montgomery, whose album Grooveyard had "an enormous influence" on Martino, he also cites Johnny Smith, a Stan Getz associate, as an early inspiration. "He seemed to me, as a child. to understand everything about music," Pat recalls. . Martino became actively involved with the , early rock scene in Philadelphia, alongside stars like Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker and Bobby Darin. His first road gig was with jazz organist Charles Earland, a high school friend. His reputation soon spread among other jazz players, and he was recruited by bandleader Lloyd Price to play hits such as Stagger Lee on-stage with musicians like Slide Hampton and Red Holloway. . Martino moved to Harlem to immerse himself in the "soul jazz" played by Earland and others. Previously, he had "heard all of the white man's jazz. I never heard that other part of the culture," he remembers. The organ trio concept had a profound influence on Martino's rhythmic and harmonic approach. and he remained in the idiom as a sideman, gigging with Jack McDuff and Don Patterson. An icon before his eighteenth birthday, Pat was signed as a leader for Prestige Records when he was twenty. His seminal albums from this period include classics like Strings!, Desperado, El Hombre and Baiyina (The Clear Evidence), one of jazz's first successful ventures into psychedelia. . In 1976, Martino began experiencing the excruciating headaches which were eventually diagnosed as symptoms of his aneurysms. After his surgery and recovery, he resumed his career when he appeared in1987 in New York, a gig that was released on a CD with an appropriate name, The Return. He then took another hiatus when both of his parents became ill, and he didn't record again until 1994, when he recorded Interchange and then The Maker. . Today, Martino lives in Philadelphia again and continues to grow as a musician. As the New York Times recently noted, "Mr. Martino, at sixty, is back and he is plotting new musical directions, adding more layers to his myth." His experiments with guitar synthesizers, begun during his rehabilitation, are taking him in the direction of orchestral arrangements and they promise groundbreaking possibilities. Musicians flock to his door for lessons, and he offers not only the benefits of his musical knowledge, but also the philosophical insights of a man who has faced and overcome enormous obstacles. "The guitar is of no great importance to me," he muses. "The people it brings to me are what matter. They are what I'm extremely grateful for, because they are alive. The guitar is just an apparatus."

With over 30 Cds as a leader and over 50 as a sideman with other jazz greats, Pat has forged an incredible career and we are thrilled to have him perform in our Fall Series.

How can you resist? Give us a call today and enjoy the holiday!

WANTED: FRIENDLY, OUTGOING, DETERMINED VOLUNTEER

These words describe very well our friend, Leslie Beamer, who has been coordinating our volunteer activities for several years now. She has decided that it is time for her to retire and pass the job along to another jazz lover. We love Leslie and will be sorry to see her go, but she has earned her retirement.

Our Volunteer Coordinator schedules our loyal and dependable crew of volunteers for all of our concerts, festivals and other events throughout the year. The job can be done from home with your own computer or you can visit the CPFJ office to make your contacts. Most of the communication is done through email, with a few phone calls necessary. On the day of the event, the VC will greet the volunteers at the venue and instruct them in their duties for that day. The VC then supervises the volunteers and acts as the troubleshooter for the day. Staff support is always available when needed.

If you love jazz and want to be more involved, give us a call at 540-1010.
