PLAYERS BOOK DEDICATION I would like to dedicate this to Greg Stafford, who was so very kind and understanding about extending my deadline when my Hawkmoon books, notes, and part of my manuscript were stolen. Thanks, Greg. If there were more people in publishing like you, I would have broken in long ago. But I want this to be dedicated especially to my friend Steve Bailey, who gave into the monster leukemia before his seventeenth birthday. He was always a staunch supporter, and I would like to leave a tribute to him in the only way I know. know he would have been proud. HAWKMOON PLAYTESTERS: Harry A. The Evolution of Modern Fantasy From Antiquarianism to the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series Jamie Williamson palgrave macmillan x PREFACE some cohesion. On the other hand, this approach tends toward oversim plification and breeds a kind of tunnel vision. One area which that tunnel vision has largely eliminated from consid eration in histories of fantasy has been the narrative poetry, some quite long, of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: work that engaged similar subject matter, identifieditself with similar areas of premodem and tradi tional narrative, and was widely read by many of the writers of the BAFS Introduction canon. Another area, not neglected but needing some refinement of per spective, has to do with those "epics and romances and sagas": they are gen erally alluded to rather indiscriminately as stufffrom (vaguely) "way back Charting the Terrain then." But modern access to these works is via scholarly editions, transla tions, epitomes, and retellings, themselves reflectingmodern perspectives; to readers of two centuries ago, the medieval Arthurian romances seeing print forthe first time were as new as Pride and Prejudice. SPRAGUE DE CAMP OR, THE COMPLEAT DRAGON-CATCHER BY ROGER ZELAZNY Let me tell you about L. Sprague de Camp. Thia is the sixth time I’ve tried. (It’s not that you weren't paying attention. The first five trials, wisely, are paper snowballs which my cat at least is enjoying. By and large, though, her tastes differ from yours and mine. Good thing, too.) It is a hard, hard thing to write about someone you admire hell out of, without sounding like an ad man pushing a new brand of filter-tips or next year's model Fordrolet. This is not my intention, but if it seems to seep in around the edges -- well, you know ... If you've read de Camp, that is, you know. I've never met Mister de Camp, so I can't give you a word portrait or even a line-drawing as to lineament and design, favorite frowns and smirks, taste in cravats, etc. All I know is what I've read in the books with the rocket ships on the covers and the ones without the rocketships, too. So let me tell you about the L. Sprague de Camp^ know. He went and wrote whole big stacks of things. The first one I read was called LEST DARKNESS FALL* Which is why I read more. Quickly then, I read ROGUE QUEEN.
