ST.GEORGE MARATHON: SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2009 Over 25,000 people will line up for the 2009 St.George on Sunday 11 October . The Melbourne Marathon offers a choice of four distances, and features one of the most memorable finishes of any event in the world, with all participants having the opportunity to run a lap of the mighty MCG before crossing the finish line in front of the MCC Members’ Stand.

7.00am St.George Melbourne Marathon (42.195km) 7.30am The Coffee Club 10km 8.00am SALONPAS Half Marathon (21.1km) 10.30am ASICS 5km Run 10.45am ASICS 5km Walk

The courses take in some of Melbourne’s most famous landmarks, including Federation Square, the Victorian Arts Centre, St Kilda Road, the Tan, the Shrine, Albert Park Lake and Beaconsfield Parade.

The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC) is the official charity partner for the event. Last year, Melbourne Marathon participants collectively raised $150,000 to assist CPEC in its mission of enabling children living with Cerebral Palsy to live life to their highest possibilities. The organisation has set a fundraising target of $209,000 for 2009.

MELBOURNE MARATHON – 32 YEARS AND GOING STRONG The Melbourne Marathon has been held every year since 1978, when almost 2,000 runners completed the course from Frankston to Melbourne. It has seen many changes over the past 32 years, perhaps most significantly its move to the MCG in 2007. The course now winds its way past some of Melbourne’s best known landmarks such as Flinders Street Station, the Victorian Arts Centre, the Shrine, Albert Park Lake and Beaconsfield Parade.

Combined with the introduction of new distances and ’s growing love affair with fun runs, the event has gone from strength to strength in recent years. 2008 saw a record of almost 20,000 finishers, and this year looks like attracting even more runners and walkers across the four distances.

One thing which hasn’t changed about this iconic Melbourne event is the participation of eleven hardy individuals known as the Spartan Legends. They have completed all 31 Melbourne (the full distance), and will be lining up for number 32 this year. You’ll be able to recognise them by their distinctive black singlets, with the wording “I’ve done the lot” inscribed on the back.

AUSTRALIAN MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP After successfully staging the 2008 Australian Championship over the Half Marathon distance, IMG are proud to announce that Athletics Australia have awarded the St.George Melbourne Marathon the right to host the Australian Marathon Championship for 2009 & 2010. Remarkably, this will be the first time Victoria has hosted the national titles since 1981.

The Championship race will bring together many of Australia’s finest distance athletes as they run for both individual and team honours. In true “State of Origin” fashion, plenty of pride will be on the line as the states and territories go to head to head in both the men’s and women’s championships.

VICTORIAN MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP The St.George Melbourne Marathon will once again play host to the Victorian Marathon Championship. Runners registered as a competing member with Athletics Victoria are eligible to vie for the Championship, with medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd being awarded to the male and female place getters.

KERRYN MCCCANN MEMORIAL Kerryn McCann’s victory in the marathon is surely one of the all- time greatest moments in Australian sport. When Kerryn succumbed to her long battle with cancer in December last year, Australia lost one of its bravest and most remarkable sports heroes; her performances as a dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist and mother of three continue to serve as terrific inspiration for women around the country.

In recognition of Kerryn’s moment of glory at the MCG, the first Australian woman to cross the line in this year’s Melbourne Marathon will be awarded the Kerryn McCann Memorial Trophy. Fittingly, Kerryn’s sister Jenny Gillard is among the top contenders; it was Kerryn who encouraged Jenny to run the Melbourne Marathon, and experience the atmosphere of finishing on the MCG. It has also just been announced that Kerryn’s son, 12 year old Benton, will fire the starter’s gun for the marathon. Benton celebrated his mum’s victory in 2006 when they ran a lap of the MCG together following her remarkable win. Finally, Kerryn's mother Judy Hindmarsh will join Benton in presenting the memorial trophy.

EVENT CHARITY: CPEC – THE CEREBRAL PALSY EDUCATION CENTRE CPEC is located in Glen Waverley and provides specialist education services for children with Cerebral Palsy throughout Australia.

What is Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a physical condition that affects a child born in Australia every 18 hours. CP is the most common physical disability in childhood. CP results from damage to the developing brain before, during birth or early in life. Babies most at risk of CP are those born prematurely or with low birth weight. There is no known cure, pre birth test and the incidence of severe disability is on the increase.

What does CPEC do? CP can be as mild as a weakness in one hand to ranging to almost complete lack of movement. Some people with CP may also have vision, hearing, speech or intellectual impairment. The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre is acknowledged as a world leader in providing specialist education programs for children with CP. To achieve the best outcome for children with CP specialist early intervention is required. The CPEC education programs include a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, a speech pathologist and a CP teacher consultant. Due to our intensive group programs our children achieve levels of independence that go beyond what medical practitioners thought was possible. Many of our children learn to be mobile rather than be confined to a wheel chair as well as to communicate even if they are unable to speak. Life is much easier when you can express how you feel. Or even tell mum and dad you love them.

The Goal for 2009! Last year our wonderful runners and walkers helped to raise $120,000. This year our target is $209,000 in 2009 which will go towards new equipment and services. Unfortunately, the equipment required for our babies and children is expensive. But with your help we can get more of our children mobile and communicating.
