Hij ontmoet een klein wezen dat zich openbaart als Yoda; de Jedi-meester accepteert Luke met tegenzin als zijn leerling na overleg met Obi-Wans geest. Luke leert meer over de Force van Yoda, die zijn X-wing met de Force uit het moeras tilt. Na het ontwijken van de keizerlijke vloot, reist de groep van Han naar de drijvende Cloud City op de planeet Bespin , die wordt bestuurd door Han's oude vriend Lando Calrissian. Vader is van plan om de groep als aas te gebruiken om Luke te lokken, met de bedoeling hem te vangen en hem naar de donkere kant van de Force te sturen. Luke ervaart een voorgevoel dat Han en Leia pijn hebben en, tegen de zin van Yoda en Obi- Wan in, stopt hij met zijn training om hen te redden. Vader is van plan Luke opgeschort te houden door hem in carboniet op te sluiten en Han als experiment te selecteren om bevroren te worden. Han overleeft het proces en wordt gegeven aan Fett, die van plan is een premie van Jabba the Hutt op hem te innen. Lando, nog steeds trouw aan Han, bevrijdt Leia en Chewbacca, maar ze zijn te laat om te voorkomen dat Fett met Solo vertrekt. Ze worden aangevallen door stormtroopers en vechten zich een weg terug naar de Falcon en vluchten de stad uit. Ondertussen arriveert Luke en betrekt Vader in een lichtzwaardduel dat hen over de centrale luchtschacht van de stad leidt. Vader verbreekt Luke's rechterhand, ontwapent hem en verleidt hem om zijn woede te omarmen en zich bij de duistere kant aan te sluiten. Luke beweert dat Vader zijn vader heeft vermoord, maar Vader onthult dat hij de biologische vader van Luke is. Luke gelooft de waarheid niet en valt in de luchtschacht en wordt onder de drijvende stad uitgeworpen, waar hij een antenne vastpakt. Hij reikt telepathisch uit naar Leia, die hem voelt en Lando en Chewie overhaalt om terug te keren. Nadat Luke aan boord wordt gebracht, worden ze achtervolgd door TIE fighters in de richting van Vader op zijn Star Destroyer en vinden dat de Falcon ' hyperdrive s is gesaboteerd, maar R2-D2 reactiveert het, waardoor ze om te ontsnappen. Luke voegt zich weer bij de rebellenvloot en zijn afgehakte hand wordt vervangen door een robotprothese. Lando en Chewbacca beginnen hun zoektocht om Han te redden, terwijl de andere rebellen de Falcon zien vertrekken. Denis Lawson vertolkt zijn rol als Wedge Antilles uit de eerste film. John Hollis speelt Lobot, Lando's persoonlijke assistent. Julian Glover verschijnt als General Veers , een generaal die het rijk leidt in de slag om Hoth. Kenneth Colley portretteert Admiral Piett , top admiraal van het Rijk. Michael Sheard geportretteerd Admiral Ozzel , Vader's vorige admiraal. Michael Culver treedt op als Captain Needa , een van de kapiteins van het rijk die de Millennium Falcon niet heeft gevangen. John Ratzenberger portretteert Major Derlin , een van de officieren die de rebellen in de Battle of Hoth leidt. Bruce Boa treedt op als generaal Rieekan , de militaire adviseur van prinses Leia voor Hoth. Richard Oldfield speelde Rebellenpiloot Hobbie Klivian. Jeremy Bulloch portretteert Boba Fett , een premiejager ingehuurd door Vader. Jason Wingreen zorgde voor de stem van Fett. Meerdere acteurs hebben de keizer geportretteerd , de kwaadaardige heerser van het galactische rijk, die verschijnt via hologram. Clive Revill geeft zijn stem, terwijl actrice Marjorie Eaton hem fysiek portretteert met een masker op. George Lucas ' Star Wars , uitgebracht in mei , was een onverwacht kassucces en werd al snel een fenomeen in de popcultuur. Lucas, die het succes niet verwachtte, stopte na een tijdje met publiciteit omdat het te overweldigend werd. Door het succes van Star Wars en de bijbehorende licentiemogelijkheden was een vervolg onvermijdelijk. Vervolgacties werden op dat moment over het algemeen niet goed gewaardeerd en Lucas was niet klaar om zich te binden, aangezien de productie van de originele film 'een gruwelijke ervaring van vier jaar was geweest' - een ervaring die Lucas nooit meer wilde meemaken. De film vertegenwoordigde echter niet wat hij zich had voorgesteld, en hij wist dat een vervolg hem in staat zou stellen het verhaal af te maken. Bovendien had Lucas het Star Wars- universum al gevestigd , dus hij dacht dat een vervolg een kans zou bieden om meer ideeën en avonturen te introduceren. Lucas huurde Alan Dean Foster , de ghostwriter van de Star Wars- roman , in om de vervolgroman Splinter of the Mind's Eye te schrijven, zodat het kan worden aangepast als een low-budget film als Star Wars een mislukking was, maar in augustus Star Wars Oorlogen was nog steeds de nummer één film in bioscopen en motiveerde Lucas om de saga voort te zetten. Voordat de productie van het vervolg, toen getiteld Star Wars: Chapter II , kon beginnen, moest Lucas verschillende problemen oplossen die waren ontstaan. It’s a fine show that you should try to attend. Upcoming conventions include Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8, and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship, planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. It will take place in Oakbrook, Illinois. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be a spring edition of Ray Walsh’s Classicon. Currently, William Patrick Maynard and I are writing about the programming that will be featured at PulpFest 2019. We’ll be posting about the panels and presentations through June 10. A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal.
