Although not as important historically as , the remains are better preserved and there are some truly awe-inspiring monuments to be seen. Some of the most impressive are the massive carvings of Buddha which are hewn out of bare rock. It is not difficult here to take a step back in time and imagine life as it must have been here almost a thousand years ago. The city itself was established when the Sinhalese moved their capital from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa in the early 12th century. Later in that century, the city experienced its heyday under the ruling of Parakramabahu. He went on a building spree, constructing the huge lake and the many large buildings and parks that we visit.

The walled city has stood since the early sixteenth century, through the Colonial periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British and in our present times is proclaimed as an Archaeological Reserve and has been identified as a living World Heritage Site. The etymology of the name Galle is explained as probably an altered form of the Sinhalese word “gala”: a cattle fold or posting-place from which the Portuguese named it Point-de-Galle. The simpler and more popular theory is found in the similarity of the Sinhalese word: gala, for rock, which the Portuguese duplicated by adopting the Latin word: Gallus, for rooster. They thus designed the coat-of-arms of the city as that of a rooster standing upon a rocky perch.

After breakfast, proceed to Colombo and visit Colombo city.

Colombo, Sri Lanka‘s bustling commercial hub, is located on the country’s west coast and with a population of between 800,000 and one million (estimates vary) is by far the country’s biggest city, as well as the most developed. Its natural harbour at the mouth of the Kelani River was a magnet for successive traders and conquerors – initially the Arab merchants, then Portuguese, Dutch and British imperialists.

The city is a jarring mix of old and new, with a central cluster of high-rise office blocks and hotels overshadowing red-tiled colonial-era buildings and sprawling street markets which overflow with high-piled fruit and vegetables, colourful silks and cottons, and deliciously fragrant spices. On its crowded streets stand places of worship, symbolic of Sri Lanka‘s multiethnic heritage: graceful Buddhist viharas (temples), for instance, stand close to extravagant temples encrusted with Hindu statuary, along with Muslim mosques with minarets scattered along Colombo’s streets. Its population is swollen by some 400,000 plus commuting workers during the day and is virtually empty after nightfall. There is a lively nightlife at a number of International standard hotels, clubs, pubs and dining venues while it is limited mainly to the high end customer.

GUIDE NOTE

In Sri Lanka we have 4 categories of guides who are often given a wrong interpretation. As a responsible tour operator in Sri Lanka, we would like to clarify the differences, capabilities & responsibilities of the guides which would lead to manage customer expectations.

National Guide - They are on the top of the list holding the National tourist guide lecturers license issued by the Tourist board. The license is issued to those who successfully complete an intensive course covering subjects such as history, Wild life, Flora, Religions, Soft skills, Management skills, communication skills etc. The ability of speaking languages is evaluated & taken in to consideration. These guides are often used for groups over 8 people in order to manage the cost of the tour. But on request we can allocate a National guide for smaller groups. In this case there will be a driver as well as a guide. The guide will provide you information about the country & Site explanations. The guide will handle the organizational elements as well. There are national guides speaking various languages & guides speaking unique languages are at high demand.

Chauffer Guide - A Chauffeur guide drives the Vehicles & would give you back ground information about the places you visit. The Chauffeur guide too, follows a course conducted by the tourist board, but as not as intensive as the National guides course & has a lower level of selection policy as far as eligibility of the candidates are concerned, They have a license issued by the tourist board & can take you around the sites & give you the necessary information. The level of speaking the selected language could vary, but obviously would be able to understand each other. A Chauffeur guide accompany up to 7 people with him on a tour.

Driver - He drives your Vehicle & can communicate in English, but cannot provide you any back-ground information. His English can be basic, but would be able to have a conversation. He is not authorized to take you around the sites Specialist Guides - They are specialists in a concentrated fields such as Wild life, Flora and founa , History & Archaeology, Walking, Hiking, Cycling etc. There are chauffeur & national guides working as specialists.
