The Photograph Collections of the National Library of

We invite you to embark on a fascinating exploration of Palestine-Israel over the past 150 years via the National Library’s photograph collections. Through these collections you can pay a visit to Jerusalem in the nineteenth century, Tel Aviv as it emerged over 100 years ago, the agricultural settlements of Palestine, and the newly established State of Israel. You can follow in the footsteps of individuals, both famous and forgotten, witness cultural events and economic initiatives, and visit archeological excavations and educational institutions. You can also become acquainted with the diverse cultures imported with the waves of immigration as well as local Arab culture. Countless experiences and revelations caught by the eye of the camera are awaiting you.

The Ze'ev Aleksandrowicz Collection

The Ze'ev (Wilhelm) Aleksandrowicz Collection contains about 16,000 photographs, most taken in the early 1930s. Aleksandrowicz was born in Krakow in 1905. He was an avid Zionist and made three extended trips to Palestine before immigrating. Aleksandrowicz documented life in urban areas such as Haifa, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Safed, Tel Aviv, and Tiberias. He also photographed rural areas such as , Beit Zera, Dganya Bet, , Gan Shmuel and other villages and kibbutzim. His photographs also show different regions of Israel including the Galilee, the , the Jordan Valley, the Judean Desert, the Dead Sea, the Northern Negev, and the Sharon Plain. The collection also includes images taken by Aleksandrowicz during his travels around the world.

Stage 3 - Analysing the Photograph

Analyse your chosen photograph with the Photograph Analysis Worksheet.

Stage 4 - Sharing Your Knowledge

 Share the photographs, the information, and your thoughts in creative ways, for example:  Print the photographs and create an exhibition in your class presenting different examples of pioneers. The students will act as the exhibition guides and share their knowledge and thoughts with other students and maybe even parents.  Create an online exhibition displaying the photographs together with texts explaining the photographs and the students’ reasons for choosing these specific photographs.  Use online applications to manipulate the photograph – for example: - Make your photographs "talk" - Create movies- Create comics - Any other creative idea you may have
