Leica Camera AG is writing the next chapter in the success story of special editions finished in olive green enamel and now presents the latest model in this series – the Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’. Otherwise identical to the serial production model in terms of performance and technical specifications, the special features of this camera are its eye-catching olive green enamel finish and the accessories supplied with the camera. A carrying strap and a case for SD memory cards and credit cards, both crafted from Brandy- coloured, genuine full grain cowhide, underline the aesthetics and the unusual looks of the limited special edition of 1,500 examples of the camera. The matching Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ premium lens will be offered separately. It is the first ever M-Lens in the history of Leica products to be produced in olive green enamel finish and, together with the camera, creates a perfect symbiosis of functionality and design. Current planning foresees a limited edition of 500 examples of the Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ lens. The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ is on sale from today. • The Nikon Guide to 35Mm SLR Cameras (1982)
GUIDE TO 35MM SLR CAMERAS PRESENTED BY NIKON TECHNICAL SERVICES $2.50 Foreword If you're new to single lens reflex photography, the name "Nikon" may be new to you. It's been old hat to professional photographers for many years now, because it's the camera used by more professional photographers than all other 35mm cameras combined. Before you start thinking this is going to be a full fledged commercial for Nikon cameras, you can relax. You're not likely to see the name Nikon pitched again till you get to our equipment section at the end of this book. Why then are we doing it? Because we feel that as the recognized leader in fine photography, we have a responsibility as well as an interest to spread the word. To spend energy and money helping photography to grow and prosper. This book is just one example of that responsibility. Another is Nikon World magazine, a 32-page quarterly publication featuring magnificent portfolios, notes on new Nikon equipment and photo tips, too. Plus, Nikon Professional Service technicians are at major news events to aid the professional Nikon photographer. Photography means different things to different people. It may be a fine art, a satisfying profession, or simply a most enjoyable and exciting hobby. We sincerely hope that this book will help it find a place in your life. —NIKON TECHNICAL SERVICES © 1982 Nikon Inc., Garden City, NY 11530. All rights reserved. LEICA 60 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EXCELLENCE 1st prototype Oscar Barnack (1879-1936), researcher at the Leitz’s factory of Wetzlar, develops a prototype of photographic camera, using 35 mm cinema film. Use of this film, in a reduced format of 24 x 36 1913 mm, allows Barnack to imagine a very compact camera for that period. This camera has a single achromatic lens and no shutter. At the end of WWI, Oscar Barnack restarts his project of compact LEICA pilot production camera. He improves its concept and its ergonomics by having the idea to link together film advance with the reload mechanism of the shutter. 1923 Barnack asks Max Berek (1886-1949) to develop a small size lens able to be adapted on his camera. Then, Berek creates the famous Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm. The Leitz company decides to produce a pilot production of 6 cameras named LEICA (contraction of LEItz and CAmera). Official commercialization of the LEICA, equipped with the Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm, starts this year. These starts are laborious as people, probably accustomed to large negative format, remain distant from the smallness of the 24 x 36 mm format. LEICA I But soon, the outstanding quality and the compactness of this camera make this one receives the plebiscite of photographers. The small dimensions of this camera make its very discreet, 1925 allowing illustrated reports without people’s knowledge. Characteristics of the LEICA I are the following : • Focal shutter • Speeds from 1/20 to 1/500 of second and B • Lens Elmar 1:3.5 f=50 mm • Galilean viewfinder (and later on, removable rangefinder mounted on a special stand).
