BUNKER - COACH VISIT

Wednesday, 13th February 2019

The Driving Group's New Year event will visit the small leafy suburb of in North West London. Deep in the heart of the former RAF base of Uxbridge lies the Battle of Britain Bunker. A private tour of the Bunker has been organised by the Driving Group. The floor of the Bunker is located 60 ft below ground and is accessed by a staircase of 76 steps (there is NO LIFT ACCESS to the Bunker) The Battle of Britain Bunker Exhibition and Visitor Centre is a complex on two levels above ground. Its design embraces the central themes of flight and airplanes and features state-of-the-art museum displays. The exhibition provides insight into how the bunker worked, inside and out, featuring a replica of the original 1940 plotting map and a 360 degree touch screen experience for those unable to go underground to visit the bunker and the original Operations Room.

It was on emerging from this Bunker on 16 August 1940 that Winston Churchill spoke the iconic words "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". The words were repeated in parliament days later.

The No. 11 (Fighter) Group Operations Room, part of the Battle of Britain Bunker, was responsible for planning and coordinating the air defence of London and South East England during the Second World War. As well as bearing the brunt of the Luftwaffe attacks during the Battle of Britain, the Operations Room was in fact responsible for controlling fighter operations in the South East and over occupied Europe throughout the Second World War, including during the Dunkirk evacuations and the . The Battle of Britain Bunker was one of the key parts of the world's first integrated air defence system linking Fighter Command with Anti-Aircraft, Barrage Balloon, Observer Corps, Radio Direction Finding (radar) and the intelligence services to achieve one goal: the successful defence of the UK's airspace.
