Unit 3 Notes: Periodic Table Notes John Newlands Proposed an Organization System Based on Increasing Atomic Mass in 1864
Unit 3 Notes: Periodic Table Notes John Newlands proposed an organization system based on increasing atomic mass in 1864. He noticed that both the chemical and physical properties repeated every 8 elements and called this the ____Law of Octaves ___________. In 1869 both Lothar Meyer and Dmitri Mendeleev showed a connection between atomic mass and an element’s properties. Mendeleev published first, and is given credit for this. He also noticed a periodic pattern when elements were ordered by increasing ___Atomic Mass _______________________________. By arranging elements in order of increasing atomic mass into columns, Mendeleev created the first Periodic Table. This table also predicted the existence and properties of undiscovered elements. After many new elements were discovered, it appeared that a number of elements were out of order based on their _____Properties_________. In 1913 Henry Mosley discovered that each element contains a unique number of ___Protons________________. By rearranging the elements based on _________Atomic Number___, the problems with the Periodic Table were corrected. This new arrangement creates a periodic repetition of both physical and chemical properties known as the ____Periodic Law___. Periods are the ____Rows_____ Groups/Families are the Columns Valence electrons across a period are There are equal numbers of valence in the same energy level electrons in a group. 1 When elements are arranged in order of increasing _Atomic Number_, there is a periodic repetition of their physical and chemical -

The other thing you might want to know is whether the electron configuration in isolated atoms is important to chemists. In order to move between shells, boron, and other reference data is for informational purposes only. This number indicates how many orbitals there are and thus how many electrons can reside in each atom. This is because electrons are negatively charged and naturally repel each other. For the first formula, but it is useful for us to pair electron dots together as we might in an orbital. These are formed by combining the spherically symmetric s orbital with one of the p orbitals. A cyclotron is a charged particle accelerator that uses a magnetic field to confine particles to a spiral flight path in a vacuum chamber. An applied electrical field accelerates these particles to high energies, typically on the order of mega-electron volts. -
A Note on Radioactive Materials and Their Measurements Elements Are
A NOTE ON RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS AND THEIR MEASUREMENTS Elements are placed in the periodic table of elements according to atomic number or proton number often referred to as Z. Their atomic weights are also usually indicated and can be fractional if the element in nature contains more than one isotope. Isotopes of an element all have the same atomic number, Z, but have different numbers of neu- trons. Some of these isotopes, even in naturally occurring elements, may be radioactive, and are usually given the atomic weight of the longest known isotope. Radioactive decay occurs when an unstable atom loses energy by emitting particles and gamma radiation or by spontaneously fission- ing. (Spontaneous fission is one of the natural modes of radioactive decay in which fission occurs without the addition of external energy or particles.) The activity of a radioactive sample is simply the rate of radioactive decay, expressed as the number of decays per unit time. Traditionally, the curie (Ci) was used to quantify the decay rate and was defined as the radioactivity measured for one gram of pure radium, or ~3.7 × 1010 decays per second (d/s), but the value changed as measurement techniques improved. To avoid this problem of a “chang- ing” constant, the Curie is now defined as exactly 3.7 × 1010 d/s. The becquerel (Bq), equal to one d/s, is the official SI unit (International System of Units). The roentgen R( ) is commonly used as a unit of radiation exposure to X-ray or gamma radiation, and can be roughly defined as “that quan- tity of X-ray or gamma radiation needed to produce one electrostatic unit of ionic charge in one cm3 of air under standard temperature and pressure (STP) “normal conditions”. -

CURIUM Element Symbol: Cm Atomic Number: 96 An initiative of IYC 2011 brought to you by the RACI ROBYN SILK www.raci.org.au CURIUM Element symbol: Cm Atomic number: 96 Curium is a radioactive metallic element of the actinide series, and named after Marie Skłodowska-Curie and her husband Pierre, who are noted for the discovery of Radium. Curium was the first element to be named after a historical person. Curium is a synthetic chemical element, first synthesized in 1944 by Glenn T. Seaborg, Ralph A. James, and Albert Ghiorso at the University of California, Berkeley, and then formally identified by the same research tea at the wartime Metallurgical Laboratory (now Argonne National Laboratory) at the University of Chicago. The discovery of Curium was closely related to the Manhattan Project, and thus results were kept confidential until after the end of World War II. Seaborg finally announced the discovery of Curium (and Americium) in November 1945 on ‘The Quiz Kids!’, a children’s radio show, five days before an official presentation at an American Chemical Society meeting. The first radioactive isotope of Curium discovered was Curium-242, which was made by bombarding alpha particles onto a Plutonium-239 target in a 60-inch cyclotron (University of California, Berkeley). Nineteen radioactive isotopes of Curium have now been characterized, ranging in atomic mass from 233 to 252. The most stable radioactive isotopes are Curium- 247 with a half-life of 15.6 million years, Curium-248 (half-life 340,000 years), Curium-250 (half-life of 9000 years), and Curium-245 (half-life of 8500 years). -

Three Related Topics on the Periodic Tables of Elements
Three related topics on the periodic tables of elements Yoshiteru Maeno*, Kouichi Hagino, and Takehiko Ishiguro Department of physics, Kyoto University, Kyoto 606-8502, Japan * [email protected] (The Foundations of Chemistry: received 30 May 2020; accepted 31 July 2020) Abstaract: A large variety of periodic tables of the chemical elements have been proposed. It was Mendeleev who proposed a periodic table based on the extensive periodic law and predicted a number of unknown elements at that time. The periodic table currently used worldwide is of a long form pioneered by Werner in 1905. As the first topic, we describe the work of Pfeiffer (1920), who refined Werner’s work and rearranged the rare-earth elements in a separate table below the main table for convenience. Today’s widely used periodic table essentially inherits Pfeiffer’s arrangements. Although long-form tables more precisely represent electron orbitals around a nucleus, they lose some of the features of Mendeleev’s short-form table to express similarities of chemical properties of elements when forming compounds. As the second topic, we compare various three-dimensional helical periodic tables that resolve some of the shortcomings of the long-form periodic tables in this respect. In particular, we explain how the 3D periodic table “Elementouch” (Maeno 2001), which combines the s- and p-blocks into one tube, can recover features of Mendeleev’s periodic law. Finally we introduce a topic on the recently proposed nuclear periodic table based on the proton magic numbers (Hagino and Maeno 2020). Here, the nuclear shell structure leads to a new arrangement of the elements with the proton magic-number nuclei treated like noble-gas atoms. -

At the other end of the tube, there are particles Like the electrostatic accelerator, a charged particle is attracted to it as the charges are opposite, but just with the opposite charge. as the particle goes past the voltage changes, and the charge of the plate swaps (so it is now the same charge Like north and south poles on a magnet, the opposite charges as the particle). attract and the particle is pulled towards the voltage.
