Memo How long does it take you to find a parking space? To: Widener Student Body What's the farthest you've ever parked from campus? From: The Dome Staff Re: Ambivalence

There has been a feeling of ambivalence toward The Dome for some years Jen Sammons now. Please do not think the staff does not recognize the fact the paper is lacking. Commuter Lacking what? Pages, columns, letters to the editor, in general, input. The under " I have to drive for ten or fifteen minutes and usually end up manned staff works long hours in an attempt to pull an issue together every week, parking behind the library." but if there is nothing to print, why bother? Because we feel you can help. We are not asking for a life-long commitment, an appendage, or your soul. Just come down and check us out. We have openings in every position and would try our best to accommodate your schedule. There is no set formula for what gets into the paper. On Monday evenings Lori Taylor at 7:00 p.m. the staff gathers at the office (lower level Mac Center) and generates Commuter possible story ideas. You say the paper is boring. Guess what? We know. So, you " If I leave at one, and I have to come back, then I have to cir want daring stories and interesting subjects, let us know about it. Literally, none. For instance, some may remember Wolfgram Graffiti. We " If I can't find a spot, I park in the residential district. It did not care about their opinion because yours matters more to The Dome. We says, 'towing zone', but I park there anyway, so I won't be would have fought for it if there was a large enough contingent willing to vocalize late for class." their favor for the column. But we can not go to the floor for something no one cares enough about to speak up about. The possibilities are endless. Do you know there are issues reaching high levels of administration which are extremely newsworthy? Of course you do. So Meg Nielson do we, we just need help getting the stories together. These are .not fluff pieces sent "I come in early, so I don't have a problem. But if I leave cam down from the public relations department. Rather, they are hard-hitting news, true pus and come back, then I have to drive around campus for a journalism. All of you communications and journalism students out there: exactly couple of minutes." what kind of job do you think you are going to get after graduating from a college with a weak campus newspaper and no print media experience ? Good Luck. To all other majors: there is a section of your resume which reads-- Activities. Go ask the CAPS office how important that section is when trying to land a job. Due to technical difficulties Question of the Week photos are unavailable Diversity. Do we have members of minorities on our staff? We had an eth nically diverse staff last semester and have had interest expressed this year. We do not recruit colors of skin, we recruit journalists. It is that simple. Flyers were sent out to every student mailbox last week with no target groups in mind. We can not call every student on campus and ask them to join. Take the initiative. Our staff meeting hours are public knowledge. Come down. Do not worry about already being in the midst of the semester. There is no timetable for applications. Also, there is usually someone in the office between Monday and Thursday, especially in the evening. If these hours are not convenient for you just call us and we will try to work something out. But please do not use a feeble excuse like, " I am too busy" or "I can't attend the meetings." We are students who are carrying the same amount of classes as you and are also maintaining jobs. And we do not get paid. Well, you say why bother joining to do more work for free ? Answer: Experience. The Dome has the most modern technology which happens to be the current industry standard. We are also a social club that has outings nearly every month. If you feel the movie and album reviews tend to be exclusively rock, then give us objective rap reviews, or reggae, or classical, whatever. You write it and we will get it in ASAJ>. However, we ask you do not exclusively write opinion pieces that run on at the mouth. Some amount of background research, interviewing, and fact gathering is required occasionally. If you are looking for information on cer tain clubs in the The Dome and it is not there, call the club and get them to give us information. There are too many groups on campus for us to chase down weekly. If we attempt this and accidentally exclude some we are then guilty of favoritism. Many students have also complained the paper is not representative of real ity on Widener's campus. On the contrary, The Dome is in fact a perfect micro cosm of Widener. Everyone who reads the paper sees the student body's apathy and lack of concern for their own community. The complaints range from accusations of printing press releases to administrative propaganda. Do you know how much text is needed to fill a meager four page newspaper? Do a word count and see how many ten-point words are required. Here's a clue, the equivalent would be doing a thirty page term paper weekly. That seemingly insurmountable USk does become easier when more than five students put the paper togethet. Our staff has grown since last year with the addition ofGany new writers and layout designers. We would like to thank them for their 4:Ontributions and encourage them to continue. Bright colors and images are flying all over Widener's art museum this month thanks to a new exhibit by photographer Linda Marie called, "Beyond Reality." The 24 piece collection of dye couplers or chromogenic prints, are pictures of images and shapes that range from subtle to extravagant. As the artist explains, "these images are part of an ongoing series in which I use' the photographic medium to construct images of personal expression. They are the result of my exploration of the subjective nature of visual truth. Within them I have created my own reality." She chose to share her "reality" with Widener because she feels that it may have a student appeal because "school is about stretching horizons beyond what you know." She feels that we miss much of what we see because we don't really look! If you look deep into these photographs, you won't see much more than some blobs of color. But if you take a step back and just take them at face value, you may see some pre~ty neat images. HRM student Pamela Bogdanoff ('97) said that she saw the images of a human heart valve and a red face. She also stated, "one pic ture looked like someone threw red punch in the camera and let it run!" OK, so one or two of the photos may give off some creepy vibes, but others send off the impres-
