he York Health Foundation has a mission of inspiring donors and growing philanthropy for WellSpan’s charitable initiatives in York County. Each individual or corporation listed in this report has supported a healthier Tcommunity over the past year. Without our donors, we would not be able to support the many WellSpan activities that impact members of the community, our friends and our families.
Also in this report you will learn about a few of the people and programs that are an integral part of the York Health Foundation. Being a part of the foundation over the years has allowed me to meet many of these individuals and see donors’ support come to life. I am truly honored to serve as chairman of the York Health Foundation.
Saying the words “thank you” does not mean enough when it comes to acknowledging donors’ support. Donors improve the lives of many in our community, especially those who are in great need. On behalf of all those who have benefited from a donation, a volunteer’s time or a staff member’s dedication, I wish to thank you. With continued support, I am confident we will carry on our mission and support WellSpan’s charitable initiatives for years to come.

One Community, One WellSpan 3 Book nook brings community together
Volunteers come together to help organize and sell more than 250,000 donated books at the annual Book Nook Bonanza, which raises approximately $50,000 for WellSpan’s charitable programs.
4 York Health Foundation Annual Report or three days this year, the York Ice Arena became one of the largest “book stores” on the East Coast when the WellSpan York Hospital Auxiliary held its annual Book Nook Bonanza. The event features more than 250,000 donated books and raises approximately $50,000 each year for charitable programs across WellSpan.
“There’s so much community involvement with Book Nook, which Fis appropriate since money raised from the sale directly benefits the community,” says Lisa Oriolo, events specialist with WellSpan Philanthropy and Book Nook coordinator. “It’s the perfect example of working as one, because you have individuals who donate books, corporate donations, support from the City of York, local companies that donate equipment and employees who volunteer their time— it’s everyone coming together.”
Book collections begin Labor Day weekend each year, and volunteers spend months categorizing the books by topic. By Memorial Day weekend, everyone is geared up for the big sale in June.
Contributors are numerous. The City of York provides heavy equipment and personnel to load and unload volumes upon volumes of books. Volunteers from many areas of the community assist with set up and keep the program—and the books—moving on sale days.
First Capital Federal Credit Union and AAA Southern Pennsylvania provide corporate sponsorship and put boxes out to collect books. Volunteers from Kinard Trucking drive tractor trailers full of books from the warehouse to the Ice Arena. Volunteers also work with the York Rescue Mission to help with recycling unsold books and other items like cardboard boxes.
“It’s a totally green event that truly involves the whole community,” says Oriolo. “Nothing goes to waste.”
WellSpan York Hospital Auxiliary board member Anthony Matero often brings his entire family to help sort books at the warehouse on weekends and sometimes recruits members of the TKE Fraternity Chapter of York College to pitch in. Over the years, Matero says that his family and friends have banded together to deal with illness and disability.
By coming together to work the Book Nook, “we can help repay the community for all it has done for us and our children,” he says.
One Community, One WellSpan 5 Family’s endowment honors a legacy of curiosity

6 York Health Foundation Annual Report e had a natural curiosity about everything.” It’s a statement offered by almost everyone who knew David Eitel, MD, a long-time emergency medicine physician at WellSpan York Hospital. Dr. Eitel passed away in 2012 at the age of 63.
Dr. Eitel grew up on a tobacco farm in Canada and was “ recruited to York in the early 1980s. He went on to a Hdistinguished career that saw him wear many hats, including the founder and director of the hospital’s well-respected Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
To honor Dr. Eitel’s memory, his wife and three children recently created the David R. Eitel, MD, MBA, Celebration of Education Endowment to support the purchase of new equipment for the WellSpan York Hospital Medical Simulation Center. The center, which opened in 2008, allows doctors, residents, nurses and other staff members to practice their skills in a controlled setting on a variety of state-of-the- art medical simulators.
“David was always interested in learning new things,” says his wife Lynne, who describes her husband of 38 years as a gadget lover, obsessive index-card carrier and passionate educator. “He loved the Simulation Center and recognized the great value it had as a teaching tool.”
According to Richard Sloan, MD, director of medical education, the endowment will help the Simulation Center remain on the cutting-edge of technology.
“The simulation equipment is changing all the time,” he says. “For example, wireless mannequins are becoming standard. When the Simulation Center opened we knew it would be a financial challenge to stay up-to-date on technology. The David R. Eitel, MD, MBA, Celebration of Education Endowment will help us do that.”
Duane Patterson, director of the Simulation Center, echoes Dr. Sloan. “Medical simulation is still in its infancy as far as the technology goes,” he says. “It’s exciting to have this type of endowment because it will help us purchase the latest equipment long into the future.”
“Even while David was out on disability and not receiving full pay, we kept giving,” says Lynne. “He believed it was important to keep that commitment going.”
Lynne says that this endowment is a way of honoring her husband and ensuring that part of his spirit will stay at the hospital.
“David always said he loved ‘turning the lights on’ for people—that moment when the person who you’re teaching ‘gets it’,” she says. “Supporting the Simulation Center through this endowment is a way to keep those light bulb moments going.”

8 York Health Foundation Annual Report hanks to the generosity of employees across WellSpan, the 2012 Employee Giving Campaign raised $127,000, a 27 percent increase over the original $100,000 goal. A portion of the funds raised were used to help purchase new diagnostic equipment to support the WellSpan York Hospital OB/GYN team and provide more effective care to underserved women in the community.
TPatricia Reddy, MD, who oversees the WellSpan York Hospital OB/GYN office, says many patients are low-income, single women who are at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases. The office needed newer equipment to better detect infection and disease to allow them to receive treatment in a familiar setting without having to be referred elsewhere.
“The Employee Giving Campaign allowed us to purchase a new colposcope, which helps us view the area with magnification to detect abnormalities,” explains Dr. Reddy.
Dr. Reddy’s group also purchased a LEEP machine, a mobile computerized unit that can assist in removing abnormal cells for review. With the LEEP machine, the WellSpan York Hospital OB/GYN team can now provide more care at the office instead of referring patients to another facility.
“Sometimes we would lose women once we referred them for additional testing,” says Dr. Reddy talking about patients who didn’t follow through with recommended procedures. “There might have been transportation or language barriers or they felt scared about going somewhere that wasn’t familiar. Now we can offer comprehensive services in-house from providers and nursing staff they are already comfortable with.”
Tim Bentzel, Employee Giving Campaign co-chair and director of food and nutrition services at WellSpan York Hospital, worked with fellow co-chair Steve Simon, director of employment, to act as ambassadors of the York Health Foundation and encourage employee participation. WellSpan York Hospital OB/GYN was selected as a spotlight beneficiary, explains Bentzel, because it directly benefits the community by helping women and their families.
“Each year we adopt a different project in need of support,” he says. “Dr. Reddy came and spoke about what her program does and her equipment needs. We felt this was an opportunity to have a real impact and help these women get good care in a less intimidating environment.”
Dr. Reddy says the experience has been very empowering for both WellSpan York Hospital OB/GYN and for the patients.
“We’re able to better serve our patients in a very tangible way,” she says. “This campaign has demonstrated that contributions—no matter their size—can make a huge difference in our ability to offer great care to the community.”
One Community, One WellSpan 9 A LEGACY OF SUPPORT AND SERVICE

10 York Health Foundation Annual Report ob Erdos chuckles when he recalls a visit years ago with the long-serving chairman of the WellSpan York Hospital Board of Directors, who was hospitalized at the time. It’s one of his favorite stories to tell.
“I remember the staff did not recognize who he was because they mispronounced his name,” says Bob. “He was being treated like Bevery other patient. But that was okay because the care that is delivered at York— no matter who you are—is always excellent.”
Bob and his wife, Erda, have been regular and generous donors to WellSpan York Hospital for more than 40 years. A lifelong York resident who worked as a senior vice president at Danskin Inc., Bob was asked to join the hospital’s board of directors in 1976. He said yes and went on to serve 14 years, including time as chair of the board’s medical affairs committee.
“It wasn’t a hard decision to join the board since I already had a predisposition towards the hospital,” he says. “Our three children were born there, and I always had a good feeling about the care that was delivered at the hospital.”
Although he is long retired from his job and the board, Bob and his wife continue to support WellSpan York Hospital and the York Health Foundation. They are members of the Samuel Small Society, a special foundation program that recognizes donors who have included WellSpan in their estate plans. The society is named after Samuel Small, who had a vision for a hospital in York.
“It’s important to support the hospital, because it’s a premier medical facility and one of our region’s most important institutions,” he says. “We hold it in very high esteem.”
Bob says that the only time he hasn’t used WellSpan York Hospital for his medical care was when he was born at a Philadelphia hospital.
“And I wasn’t consulted on that!” he says laughing. “In all seriousness, I’ve never considered going anywhere else but WellSpan York Hospital.”

One Community, One WellSpan 11 1880 SOCIETY The 1880 Society, named in honor of the year of WellSpan York Hospital’s founding, is a special annual giving program. Friends of WellSpan York Hospital, WellSpan VNA Home Health, WellSpan Medical Group and the York Cancer Center give $10,000 or more, payable over a 10-year period. These gifts can be designated to a specific department or program or be unrestricted to ensure continued excellent care throughout the health care system. The reputation of WellSpan Health would make its founders very proud. While today’s healthcare system faces many challenges, 1880 Society members ensure that quality care is provided to the York community.

12 York Health Foundation Annual Report SAMUEL SMALL SOCIETY MEMBERS In 1880, a man named Samuel Small had a vision of providing compassionate, quality health care services for the York community. His vision and philanthropic spirit led to the founding of WellSpan York Hospital. If not for his effort and foresight, the organization of WellSpan Health—dedicated to bringing clinical excellence and care to its communities, and recognized as a leader in health care—might not exist today.
The members of the Samuel Small Society share that spirit and vision by ensuring that quality health care is available to all in our community for generations to come. By providing for the future health care needs, they have included the York Health Foundation in their financial or estate plans.
