directions • Summer 2019 3 From the desk of Judy

My summer reading list included a diversity of topics, including a biography of the great folk/rock singer Joni Mitchell and Second Mountain, journalist David Brooks’ book recounting his personal experience with and observations of the state of “joy.” These two books couldn’t be less similar except for the fact that they both address lifetime stories of real people with human challenges and opportunities. One might say that David Brooks has reached an age of wisdom where he can look back and report on what he’s seen as “first mountain” quests for joy, which are based on achievements or “meritocracy” – and then interpreting “second mountain” quests for joy. These “second” ones are more genuine, as they are based on finding self within community, and the satisfying act of doing for others, rather than oneself. Joni Mitchell wisely observes in her song, “The Circle Game,” that “the seasons, they go round and round… we’re captive on a carousel of time.” (By the way, she wrote that song at the tender age of 21!) Both these books left meaningful impressions on me. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to assist people in their quests to find happiness, achieve resolution to difficult relationships or situations, and realize peace or joy. David Brooks writes about how people often “weave” into their lives the challenges they’ve faced, and evolve those experiences (often negative) into positive ventures or outcomes. “What more can we be doing to make a woven life?” he asks. Joni Mitchell sings, “We can’t go back, we can only look behind from where we came, and go round and round and round in the circle game.” Life is indeed an ongoing exercise in developing skills in integration and resiliency to meet the obstacles we encounter, while maximizing opportunities along the way. You may be in the process of finishing a good book, or binging through the milieu of available viewable programming. Whatever you’re doing on your summer vacation, it’s clear that the season is getting ready to change once again. With the High Holidays only weeks away, it’s that seasonable time to view the new beginnings with hope and expectation. It is goal-reviewing and goal-setting time for those who think in terms of the new school year/new year/fresh start. If you are fortunate to be in good health and among supportive family and friends, consider how you can pay it forward to help those around you. Embracing the concept of “second mountains and carousels of time” can be motivational in creating a woven life. Expecting more of ourselves and doing more to help others is a great way to pass the seasons.

with the Friends of the Family Award at JFCS’ 31st Annual Benefit on Saturday, Dec. 7. JFCS Chief Executive Officer Judy Halper said that even though the Rheins have lived several places, Minnesota has been their home for many years and our community is extremely fortunate to count them as residents. “Together, they are a powerful team who simply identify a need, dedicate their time and resources to addressing the situation, and humbly look for additional problems they can help solve,” she said. “They are tireless in their compassion and willingness to help others who might be experiencing mental health or physical challenges, or any other barriers to happiness and purpose. 10 Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT MONTH

September is Workforce Development Month. Workforce development is an organized set of solutions to meet employment needs, and can address cultural, educational, and systemic challenges, which helps to positively influence the local economy for individuals and businesses. Workforce development, an American approach to economic development, attempts to enhance a region's economic stability and prosperity by focusing on people rather than businesses. It essentially develops a human-resources strategy. For workers, it helps them find and retain stable employment at living wages, creating financial security and stability for their families. For employers, it helps meet the workforce shortage by preparing more people for employment. Both of these things help build a stronger local economy that benefits everyone.

JFCS Career Services has several programs that support workforce development: have been able to afford. Her husband, William, had experience as a diesel mechanic. 26 Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis Ask a JFCS Counselor: What should I expect when I see a therapist?

JFCS’ highly skilled, licensed therapists work with care and compassion to address the challenges people face throughout their lives. They help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems that cause emotional turmoil, improve communication, coping skills and symptom management, strengthen self-es- teem, promote behavior change, feel better and function at their best.

Counseling services don’t need to be scary or daunting. We serve people of all backgrounds and accept most insurance, including Medicare.
