STOUFFVILLE SENIOR OF THE MONTH PAUL DELHAISE What is your age? He will be turning 61 in May How long have you lived in Stouffville? Paul and Susan, his wife of 36 years, came to Stouffville upon his retirement. They were previously living in Norfolk Beach, Virginia, and when they were searching for a place to retire it was love at the first sight of Stouffville! Tell us about your family. They have two sons: the elder, André, has his PhD in Materials Engineering and is working at a forensic engineering company in Mississauga. The younger, Alain, works at Valley Blades in Kitchener. Tell us about your career. Upon graduating from High School, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy with which he spent his entire working life. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a Computer Engineering degree and had postings in Victoria, Halifax, Ottawa, Kingston, . Twice he was posted outside of Canada: once on exchange to the Royal Navy and the second time to NATO Headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2014 he retired as a Commander after a career of 35 years with the Navy. Looking back, what are the highlights of your life? Susan, his wonderful and ever-loving wife who has always been there for him and with whom he can spend all his time. Hiking with Susan to Mount Everest Base Camp in 2019 and to Machu Picchu in 2011. While working at the NATO Headquarters, collaborating with a French colleague to rewrite the concept and procedures for the operational deployment of allied NATO military forces. During this two-year process, they were also able to get all 28 NATO countries to agree to this document: a very challenging consensus to achieve indeed! Traveling to and exploring many countries including: Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica, all western Europe and some of eastern Europe, Russia, the Baltic States, Egypt, north Africa, much of the United States, and of course our great country that he has driven coast to coast 4 times and traveled to the arctic. “What’s Life All About Grandpa?” Life is about experiencing everything you can, see and explore the world, learn and appreciate and respect everyone and their cultures, help others when you can, and most of all love yourself and your family. What do you like best about life in Stouffville? He feels busier now than when he was working full time: growing vegetables, yard work, woodworking, making wine and beer, tapping their walnut and maple trees to make walnut & maple syrup, exercise classes, enjoying nature in our back yard and on the many local trails, and golfing. What would make life in Stouffville even better? If he could make one suggestion that would make their piece of heaven safer, it would be to add a sidewalk to the road around Musselman Lake. Over the past year, they have seen so many people enjoying this area, but the vehicle traffic makes it very dangerous, especially for youngsters. Stouffville Chamber Presents: HOME RENOVATIONS Patti-Lynn Interiors OTR has partnered with the Stouffville Chamber to present a gallery of home renovators. Recently, indoor and outdoor home improvements have been in high demand. This guide is intended to provide a few more businesses to your 'rolodex'. The Pitch: As we spend more and more time at home these days (whether we want to or not), we all want to maximize our com- fort, and minimize stress and mainte- nance. Home renovations are on the rise and finding an expert to help you select the right flooring for your lifestyle, décor and budget is more important than ever. With so many flooring options what should you choose? Hardwood flooring enhances the décor of any room by providing time- less beauty that will increase in value throughout the years. Hardwood is always a beautiful choice for main floors and upper floors but may not be suitable for below grade spaces such as basements due to moisture. A relatively new introduction in the world of flooring - Luxury Vinyl Plank & Tile is fast becoming one of the top choices for very active families as it is manufactured to withstand high-traf- fic and high-moisture areas of the home including some waterproof options. This makes it a great choice for below grade spaces, bathrooms, and cottages. Carpet is a fantastic option when you want softness and warmth under your feet, or to help reduce sound transfer – especially in open concept homes. Carpet is also one of the most economi- cal ways to upgrade a home and is seeing a resurgence – especially with everyone working and schooling from home. There are fantastic patterns, colours and designs to give your space a unique look. Jones Pools Patti-Lynn Interiors is proud to offer the very best in all types of flooring.
