Gulval itself lies within a Conservation Area and the village offers a local shop, The Coldstreamer bar/restaurant named in the memory of Captain Michael Bolitho killed in the Second World War and many village activities.

The village itself is scarcely populated by manor houses, farmhouses and cottages lying approximately 1½ miles to the north east of Penzance which is, widely considered the capital of west Cornwall and is at the end of the Penzance to Paddington main railway line with direct trains to London. The town has a rich sea faring heritage and its centre abounds with period buildings which now house a wide array of high street names and more specialised retailers. The area is also famous for its arts and there are many galleries in Penzance and neighbouring Newlyn that has a large and colourful fishing fleet. 3 Ref: LCAA7094 Within Penzance there are many hotels, cafés, restaurants, museums, a hospital and both private and state education. West Cornwall is known for its rugged beauty and is surrounded by the South West Coast Path which leads over dramatic cliff tops and large sandy beaches. Just to the east of Penzance is the village of Marazion and St Michael’s Mount which can be accessed by foot across a causeway at low tide. There are many other sandy beaches including Perran Sands to the east, whilst to the far west is Sennen Cove and Whitesand Bay near Land’s End, a 2 mile long stretch of beautiful white sands beside a picturesque harbourside village that is renowned for surfing. To the south is Mousehole which attracts people from all over Europe to see its harbourside lights at Christmas and about 20 minutes’ drive to the north is the resort and surfing town of St Ives which is considered to have the best light for painting in Britain as it reflects off the waters of the 4 mile wide St Ives Bay.

• LOCAL FACILITIES – Gulval has a highly regarded primary school, state secondary education through Mounts Bay School, a village post office and stores, The Coldstreamer bar/restaurant with the town of Penzance offering a variety of shops, supermarkets, banks as well as a theatre, two libraries, tennis courts, cinema, art deco lido swimming pool and excellent sailing and leisure facilities.

• DOCTORS AND DENTISTS –There are no doctors or dentist’s surgeries in Gulval however there are a choice of both doctors and dentists within the nearby town of Penzance.

• LOCAL CAFÉS AND PUBLIC HOUSES – Gulval benefits from the famous Coldstreamer bar and restaurant which was named in memory of Captain Michael Bolitho killed in the Second World War. The nearby town of Penzance provides numerous bars, cafés, restaurants and alike.

• THINGS TO DO – Gulval is approximately 1.5 miles from Penzance, itself an inherently attractive town, with many wonderful granite buildings, particularly around the town’s two central parks. It also has a considerable artistic community which is reflected in a number of galleries. There are plenty of activities and things to do in Penzance and below contains just a few suggestions.

o Explore Chapel Street which runs from the town centre down to the harbour, the most historic street in Penzance containing an eclectic mix of shops, houses and hotels most of which date back to the 18th Century and before. Possibly the most unusual of these is the Egyptian House with its colourful Egyptian styling and sphinx-like adornments. Nearly every building on Chapel Street has a story with others of note including the Admiral Benbow , the Rotterdam buildings and the Turks Head .

o Just around the corner from Chapel Street is The Exchange, a major contemporary art gallery/space. The works featured here range from those of local to international artists. The building itself is of interest, the former telephone exchange was extensively altered to include a huge bold glass wall illuminated by 100’s of coloured LED lights.

o Penlee House Gallery and Museum situated within the confines of Penlee Park, this Victorian manor house is now home to a gallery, the town museum and a pleasant café. The gallery specialises in the Newlyn School artists, the best known of which were Stan Hopeforbes and Walter Langley with regular exhibitions. 4 Ref: LCAA7094 o Morrab Gardens - 3½ acres of subtropical gardens stretching from the centre of town to the seafront. The gardens contain exotic plants, rarely seen in other parts of Britain.

o Jubilee Pool – the Jubilee Pool is the jewel in Penzance’s seafront. Positioned on the headland between the promenade and the harbour this art deco lido is the largest of its kind in Britain.

o Trengwainton Gardens – the gardens at Trengwainton are now run by the National Trust but were started by the Bolitho family in the mid-19th Century.

o Visit some ancient stones. The landscape of west Cornwall is littered with ancient sites dating back to the stone and bronze ages, some of the most iconic of which are within a stone’s throw of Penzance. These include the Lanyon Quoit, the Hold Stone of Mên-an-Tol and the Merrymaidens stone circle.

o Visit Mousehole. If you are going to spend any time in and around Penzance or its surrounds then a trip over to the picture perfect fishing village of Mousehole is a must. Once described as the loveliest village in by poet Dylan Thomas.

o Go to the . Penzance is still the only place you can sail to the Isles of Scilly from, and is likely to remain that way. The Scillonian III is a ferry running from Penzance harbour from the end of March until the beginning of November. It is by far the cheapest option, although the journey takes 2 hours in each direction.

• NEARBY WALKS – Cornwall has the longest coastline in Britain and offers everything that a walker could want. West Cornwall has many ancient paths, ways and rights of way established by the miners, fishermen and farm workers over the centuries. You can take your pick from many remote moorland hikes and cliff top walks with stunning views. Many of the walks have staggering beauty which keeps changing with the weather and the season.
