Chronicle Herald Wednesday May 11, 1966 - Fredrick J. Landry, a life-long resident of the Kentville area, died Tuesday morning. He was the son of the late Marcus and Dorcas (Chase) Landry. Mr. Landry worked as a carpenter for a time, and at the age of 17 took employment with the Dominion Atlantic Railroad. At the time of his retirement, after 45 years’ service, he was the car shop foreman. Well-known in the area, he spent most of his retired life donating his services as a carpenter to various community projects, including building a pulpit for the Aldershot Church. Surviving are a sister, Alice (Mrs. Walter Galley), Kentville; a brother, Charles, New Hampshire; a daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Jack Bishop), Kentville; three grandsons and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Elma Arnold, two brothers and four sisters. The remains are at the H. C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Kentville. A funeral, service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, Archdeacon L.W. Mosher will officiate with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Chronicle Herald Wednesday May 01, 1963 Kentville - Arthur W. Landry, retired railway conductor died at the Spicer’s Nursing Home, Berwick, following several years’ illness. Born in Aldershot 70 years ago, he was the son of the late John and Letitia Wamboldt Landry. Following his schooling at Aldershot and Kentville he joined the Dominion Atlantic Railway as a trainman. His wife, the former Alice Goddard of England, predeceased him in 1953. Mr. Landry was a member of the Bluenose Brotherhood of Railways Lodge. Surviving is one daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Daniel Stewart), Aldershot; two sons, Harry, Kentville; Claude, RCAF, Ottawa; five sisters; Bessie (Mrs. Roy Shaw), Winnipeg; Annie (Mrs. Hollis Miller), Kentville; Connie (Mrs. Arthur Weir); Aldershot; Thelma (Mrs. Charles Arenburg), Kentville; Dollie (Mrs. Fred Leopold), Kentville. The late Mr. Landry, who is resting at the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, Kentville, will be taken to the Kentville Baptist Church for Funeral Service Thursday at 2 p.m., Dr. G.N. Hamilton will officiate. Interment will be in the Family lot in the Oaks Cemetery, Kentville.

Chronicle Herald Monday Sept 06, 1965 KENTVILLE - Mrs. Mary Ellen Landry, of Highbury, died in Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital Saturday morning. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harris Vaughan. Surviving is one grandson, Robert Trefry, of Kentville; five stepdaughters, Thelma (Mrs. Charles Arenburg); Annie (Mrs. Hollis Miller); Evangeline (Mrs. Arthur Weir); DoIly (Mrs. Fred Leopold), all of Kentville, and Bessie (Mrs. Roy Shaw) of Winnipeg; also one great-grandchild. Funeral services, to be conducted by Rev. Freeman C. Fenerty, will be held from the funeral chapel of W. C. Hiltz and Son today at 2 p.m. Burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late John and Letitia (Wamboldt) Landry. He attended school in Kentville and was employed with his father in the painting and decorating business before going to New York in 1927. Surviving besides his wife are on son, John, at home; two daughters, Patricia and Shirley, all of Mineloa, one brother, Arthur Landry, Kentville; five sisters, Bessie, Mrs. Roy Shaw, Winnipeg; Dolly, Mrs. J. Fred Leopold, Kentville; Annie, Mrs. Hollis Miler, ; Claudia, Mrs. Arthur Weare, and Thelma, Mrs. Charles Arenburg, Kentville. Funeral services wkill be held from the H.C. Lindsay Memorial Chapel, Kentville at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, Dr. George N. Hamilton will officiate. Interment in Elm Grove Cemetery, Kentville.

Born in Bramber, Hants County, he was a son of the late George and Florie (Kelley) McNamara. He was a carpenter in the Kings County area most of his life. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with West Novies and later with Black Watch Regiment. He is survived by his wife, the former Murna Kinsman; three daughters, Donna (Mrs. John Bickerton), Sheffield Mills; Bonnie (Mrs. Paul Kinsman), Centerville; Misty, at home; a son, Daniel, Kamloops, B.C.; a stepdaughter, Corrina Kinsman, New Minas; a stepson, Paul Kinsman, Centerville; two sisters, Alberta, Madeline, both of Greenfield, a niece; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She worked at home for a number of years as well as at Mount Saint Vincent University and for her husband’s firm, Tom Withers Ltd. She was a life master in the American Contract Bridge League and was very active in church circles and volunteer activities. Born in Quebec City, he was a son of the late Pierre and Jeanne (Asselin) Gagnon. He was formerly a science and mathematics teacher at Laval University. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served as a staff officer with the Medical Corps and retired with the rank of major in 1962. He was employed by The Civic Protection, Quebec City, Junior Red Cross in Montreal and Toronto and for the past 13 years as a translator at the Transport Training Institute in Cornwall. He survived by his wife, the former Marian Stone; son, Gerard, Chester; daughter, Micheline (Mrs. George Desormiers), Drummondville, Que.; two brothers, Lucien, Gerald, both of Quebec City; four sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Charles Leclerc), Mrs. Pauline Bedard, Therese Gagnon, all of Quebec City; Mrs. Jacqueline Laplante, Montreal; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren. Born In Marystown, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Peter and Bridget (Drake) Withers. Mr. Withers was retired from management of his own construction business, Tom Withers Ltd. of Halifax. He was a well known builder in the city for 40 years. Chronicle Herald Saturday Mar 21, 1964 St. Peter’s, Cape Breton - The death of Hugh Jackson, of 1138 Tower Road, Halifax, occurred at the Victoria General Hospital after a short illness on Friday. Formerly of St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, he was living with his son Percy. His wife predeceased him on March 16. Born in Cape Breton, son of the late Malcolm and Annie (Campbell) Jackson, he worked with boats most of his life, and was employee by the Department of Public Works. He was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by one daughter, Monica (Mrs. Clarence MacNeil) St. Peter’s; his son Percy, and sister Josephine Stone, Halifax. Remains are resting at R.D. Lindsay’s Funeral Home, Bayer’s Road, and will be transferred to his late residence in St. Peter’s. Funeral will be held from St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Interment at St. Peter’s.

He worked at HMC Dockyard for 25 years, retiring in 1975. Chronicle Herald Friday July 20, 1973 BEAVERBANK - Clarence (Alec) Leo Grover, 65, of Beaverbank, died Thursday in the Payzant Memorial Hospital, Windsor. Born in Canso, he was a son of the late Samuel and Frances (Lawrence) Grover. For the past seven years he was a federal civil servant at HMC Dockyard. Previously he was a warrant officer in the RCAF before retiring in 1962 after 27 years of service. He was also a veteran of the Second World War and a former member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He was a life and executive member of the EAC, Marine Squadron, RCAF Association and a former master of Canadian Merchant Service Guiley. He was a former member of the Bedford Branch No. 95, Royal Canadian Legion, a member of the Welsford No. 26, Hiram Chapter AF and AM and belonged to the Knights Templar of Canada, Edmonton, Preceptory No. 46. He is survived by his wife, former Margaret Kathrine Card; one son, Alex, at home; one sister, Margaret (Mrs. Dennis Veilleax), Halifax; two brothers, Howard, Canso, and Hugh, Dingwall. The body is at R. D. Lindsay Funeral Home, Windsor, where funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., Rev. Horace MacLean officiating. Burial will be at the Maplewood cemetery, Windsor. Born in Dominion No.2, he was the youngest child of the late John and Annie (Morrison) Carter. Bill was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion and had served with the Royal Canadian Service Corps, during the Second World War. He worked for the City of Halifax for many years and had previously worked with Archibald’s Fuels. Bill was also a member of Scotia Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and of the Halifax Homeowner Association. Mary ‘Lorena’ was a graduate of Normal College in Truro, a mid-wife and practical nurse of Richmond County. She was a switchboard operator and supervisor in Beaverbank Air Force Base, and later at Shearwater Naval Base. She will be lovingly remembered by many for her love of bingo, also of gardening, flowers, making pies, bread, and biscuits, which she lavished on her many friends. She was a member of St. Bridget’s Parish in Shubenacadie and as a devote Catholic made numerous trips to St. Ann’s, and one to Medgeorie. She is survived by her sons, John (Carol), River Bourgeois; Harold (Carol), Sbubenacadie; daughter, Ann (John) Wells, St Andrews; sister, Mary Ann Robertson, River Bourgeois; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces. Richmond Record Saturday Oct 17, 1953 The death of Mrs. Thomas J. Shaw of this place occurred on Sunday the 11th inst. at the age of 68 years. Mrs. Shaw’s passing came as a great shock to her husband, family and friends. Suffering from a heart attack on Saturday night she passed away at 8:30 Sunday morning. The former Ada Elizabeth Parker, she resided in Arichat during her lifetime and reared a family of three boys and three daughters; Reginald of Halifax, Ivan and Chester at home; Edna, Evelyn and Ruby, all at home. All members of the family with the exception of Reginald were present at their mother’s bedside. Two brothers also survive; Philip Parker of Arichat and Jack Parker of Crapaud, P.E.I. A devoted wife and mother, her sudden and untimely passing has left a vacant chair and only time can partly heal the great sorrow that has befallen the bereaved husband and family. The funeral which was largely attended took place from St. John’s Anglican Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. W.A. Trueman officiating in the Church and at the grave.

J.; and (Mary) Mrs. Angus A. Poirier; four sons, John, Edward and Jerry, all of Sydney, Cape Breton and Hubert residing in Paulsboro, New Jersey; one brother, John A. Landry, of Petit de Grat; a sister, Mrs. Zelian Boudreau, passed away last February. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The funeral was held at St. Hyacinth Church, D’Escousse, with Rev. Fr. Boucher, Rev. Fr. Poirier and Rev. Fr. Gerrior officiating. Rev. Peter Baccardax, Semenarian student, master of ceremonies. Burial was in St. Hyacinth Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Poirier officiating at the graveside.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 1, 1953 The community was saddened by the sudden passing following a heart attack of Mrs. Gerald Hollett (nee May Pottie) 39 on July 15th, resident of Halifax who was on vacation at the home of her mother Mrs. Leona Pottie, Rockdale. Mrs. Hollett was favorably known and news of her passing was learned with deep regret by a widespread circle of friends and acquaintances. Surviving besides her husband are two sons Douglas and Wayne, five sisters, Mrs. Thomas Yonkom, Toronto; Mrs. Arthur LaFond, Mrs. Anthony Jean, Halifax: Mrs. Elgar Cotie, Grand Greve; Mrs. Charles MacNeil, L’Ardoise; two brothers Murdock Pottie, Toronto and Fred Pottie, Rockdale. The remains were taken to Halifax where funeral was held on Saturday, 18th. Deepest sympathy is extended the bereaved family.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 1, 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Alex M. Boudreau of this place received the sad news during the week that their son Raymond had passed away in a Montreal hospital. Raymond who was only 26 years of age joined the Merchant Navy about ten years ago and during that period visited many foreign ports. He was planning his first visit home in a few weeks’ time and his parents were eagerly looking forward to seeing him. The sympathy of the community goes to Mr. and Mrs. Boudreau and family in the hour of their sorrow.

Richmond Record Saturday Sept 19, 1953 The death occurred on Tuesday evening August 25th in St. Anthony’s home, Sydney, of Mrs. Emmeline Murphy, 82, well known and respected resident of Point Michaud. Her passing, which followed an illness of several months, will be learned with deep regret by widespread circle of friends and acquaintances. Her husband predeceased her two years ago. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. John MacDonald (Catherine) Brookline, Mass., and Mrs. Felix Burke, both of whom were at her bedside when she passed away. The remains were taken to her home at Point Michaud where the funeral took place on Friday morning following Requiem Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. P. A. LeBlanc, P.P. Pall bearers were Martin Maillett, USA, Leo Burke, Jas. Gillen, Sydney, Leo Gracie, Leonard Samson and Harold Westlake. The community extends deepest sympathy to the surviving daughters in their sad bereavement.

Richmond Record Saturday Oct 17, 1953 The death of Simon Briand, West L’Ardoise occurred at his home on September 28th. He was in his 70th year and his passing following a lingering illness will be regretted and mourned by a widespread circle of Friends and acquaintances. Besides his widow he is survived by five sons and three daughters, they are Mrs. Frank Durant and Mary Briand of Lowell, Mass.; Mrs. Charles I. Mombourquette, West L’Ardoise; sons are, Walter and Steve, Saundersville, Mass., Samuel, Patsy and Abraham, West L’Ardoise, all of whom were at his bedside when he passed away. Funeral took place on Wednesday morning following Requiem Mass at 9 o’clock celebrated by Rev. Fr. P.A. LeBlanc, P.P. Deepest sympathy is extended the family in their sad bereavement.

She is survived by her husband, Denis; two sons, Neil, Peter, both at home; four brothers, John, Kevin, David, Darrell, all of Dartmouth, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her stepfather, John Lee Romo. There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be 9 a.m. Monday in Dartmouth Funeral Home, Rev. White officiating. Burial in Mount Hermon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Cancer Society.

Devoe was a former employee of Saint Elizabeth Hospital and was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Devoe; several sisters, Joyce, Beverley, Brenda, Mable, Lorraine, Emmajane, Angela; two brothers, Kevin, Brian, all at home. Born in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Michael and Sarah Rehberg. He worked for 16 years for the Brandram - Henderson Paint Factory on Kempt Road. During World War Two he served with the RCN. He is survived by his wife, the former Sadie Peters, L’Ardoise, one daughter, Joan (Mrs. Daniel Martell), Meteghan, Digby County; two sons, Michael and Kenny, at home; five sisters, Ada (Mrs George Barrett), Halifax; Belia (Mrs. Alex Bolduc), Halifax; Sadie (Mrs. Fred Landry), Halifax; Margaret (Mrs. Richard Sampson), L’Ardoise; Mrs. Blanche Martin, L’Ardoise; two brothers, Joseph, Toronto, and Murdock, L’Ardoise. The remains are at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, Robie Street. The body will be forwarded this evening to L’Ardoise where funeral services will be held Saturday morning from Hold Guardian Angel Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Richmond Record Saturday Jan 2, 1954 The death of Thomas Babin proprietor of the American House in this town for the past several years, occurred suddenly at his home on December 18th. The late Mr. Babin was 62 years of age and leaves to mourn his passing a wife, the former Delta Robertson of River Bourgeois and three small children; also a nephew Cyril Nicholl of Dartmouth, who attended the funeral. A cousin Samuel Vigneau resides here. The funeral which was largely attended was held from Notre Dame d’Asumption Church here on Sunday afternoon, December 20 with Rev. Father A.P. Poirier officiating, in the church and at the grave. The pallbearers were J. Emile Benoit, Thos. Acton, Wilfred Boucher, C.D. Campbell, Arthur Theriault and M.J. Bourinot. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of C. A. Boucher Funeral Director. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.

J.B., Halifax; Leo, Dingwall; Francis, Saskatchewan; Melvin, Brian and Nicky, all of Sydney; a daughter Mary Frances, at home; a brother Howard, Canso; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Veilleux, Halifax, and Marie, Canso; 11 grandchildren. Richmond Record Saturday Nov 7, 1953 AGED L’ARDOISE RESIDENT SERIOUSLY INJURED BY ENRAGED COW A 93-year-old L’Ardoise woman was placed on the critically ill list at the Victoria General Hospital Monday after being hospitalized eight days since she was bunted by a cow near her home. Mrs. Angelina Samson suffered chest injuries and a fractured leg when she was knocked to the ground Oct. 5 by a cow owned by a neighbour, members of her family reported. They said the 90-year-old great- grandmother who has never before been in hospital was walking through a nearby field toward her home when she was attacked by the cow. She told relatives later the animal struck her in the chest with its head. First news of the incident, they said, came when another neighbour, Mrs. James F. Sampson heard the woman’s cries and found her in the field trying to crawl away from the cow, on her hands and knees. Mrs. Sampson helped the victim over a fence and summoned Dr. Morrison, of St. Peter’s who administered initial treatment. The injured woman was brought to Halifax the next day by her son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Tompkins, Halifax, and admitted to the Victoria General Hospital where officials said she had been placed on the critically ill list.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 15, 1953 The death of John Pelham, a highly respected citizen of Janvrin’s Harbour passed away at his home on Thursday at the age of 88 years. He was a devout member of the catholic faith and was very active until his death which occurred suddenly. He is survived by his wife and two sons Hycinth at home and Ivan in the United States. The funeral was held on Saturday with Rev. Fr. Doucet officiating at the church and grave. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Richmond Record Saturday, Sept 5, 1953 After a brief illness Colin Paon of this place passed away at the V. G. Hospital, Halifax, on August 28th. . News of his death was received here with deep sorrow where he was well and favourably known by his many friends. Born at Martinique 41 years ago he took up residence here about eight years ago having purchased land from Mrs. D. H. Cutler where he built a dwelling and barber shop in connection. He later sold lots on this property where today three other dwellings are situated. Two years ago he sold his home to Joseph Goyetche but occupied the barber shop. He purchased a piece of land from J. Emile Benoit where he built a modern dwelling. An Industrious man the late Colin Paon did much to improve and encourage building in this town and during the short period he resided here erected two homes. As a trustee of the Arichat School Section the late Mr. Paon was always ready to help improve conditions of the school and during his term of office as trustee, the Arichat school was renovated. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing a wife and four small children to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy in the passing of a loving husband and father. The funeral was largely attended which attested to the esteem in which the late Colin Paon was held by his many friends throughout Isle Madame.

Born in L’Ardoise, he was a son of Mrs. Selina (Mombourquette) Burkey and the late Frank Burkey. He served with the Canadian Army Dental Corps during the Second World War and was a retired fisherman. Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, Edna; a son, Billy, L’Ardoise; four brothers, Charles, Alfred, Clifford, and Roy, all of L’Ardoise; four sisters, lrene (Mrs. Freeman Ernest), Hackett’s Cove; Bertha (Mrs. Raymond Crewe), and Lena (Mrs. Joe Gerrior), both of L’Ardoise; Vina (Mrs. Jerome Richard), Halifax; and two granddaughters. The body is in L’Ardoise Parish Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be 10:20 a.m. Thursday in Holy Guardian Angel’s Church, L’Ardoise, Rev. Basil Boudreau officiating. She was a member of the St. Peter’s Altar Society, the CWL and worked as a volunteer for the Richmond Villa for more than 20 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Maddox; brother, Stephen Cameron. She is survived by daughter, Marie Landry (Tommy), St. Peter’s; granddaughters, Dorraine Landry, St. Peter’s and Kendra Landry, Sydney. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers for 25 years and was later an administrator for the Hamilton School Board until his retirement. He was a member of branch #47, Royal Canadian Legion, St. Peter’s. He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Bobbitt; three daughters, Marlene (Mrs. Robert Whitehead), Ottawa; Lorraine (Mrs. John Beagan), Oakville, Ont.; Vicki (Mrs. Grant Papineau), Borden, Ont.; a brother Todd, St. Peter’s; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Hospital, Halifax, Oct 9th after a few months illness was learned here with deep regret by a widespread circle of friends and acquaintances. Mrs. MacDonald was in her 26th year. She was a native of Rockdale but had been residing in St. Peter’s for several years. Besides her husband she is survived by two young sons. Surviving also are her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Martel, Rockdale, five brothers and two sisters. They are: Mrs. Wilfred Bonley [sic: Boulet] and Leona, Rockdale, Charles Martell, Halifax, James Donald, Lawrence and Lester, Rockdale. The largely attended funeral was held on Sun. afternoon from the home of her parents at Rockdale to the church of the Guardian Angel with services conducted by Rev. Fr. MacEachern, P.P. St. Peter’s, assisted by Rev. Dr. P.A. LeBlanc. Rev. Fr. Hector MacNeil officiated at the grave. The many Mass cards, floral arrangements, letter of condolences are evidence of the high esteem in which Mrs. MacDonald was held.

Richmond Record Saturday Nov 20, 1953 The death of Mr. Pascal Mombourquette, West L’Ardoise occurred on Saturday October 31, following a lingering illness, at the age of 89. Mr. Mombourquette spent all his life here with the exception of seasonal employment in the Cape Breton area as a carpenter. Quiet, Kindly and obliging, he was well known and very highly regarded. His wife predeceased him several years ago; also a son Henry predeceased him in Montreal about a year ago. Surviving are two sons and one daughter. Two brothers also survive, Robert and Simon Mombourquette, Saundersville, Mass, The funeral took place on Monday morning following Mass of Requiem at 9 o’clock celebrated by Rev. Fr. Hector McNeil. Pall bearers were Messrs. Bernard Mombourquette, William Chiasson, Cornelius Mombourquette and Willie C. Mombourquette. Interment was in Guardian Angel Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended the surviving members of the bereaved family. Attending the funeral were sons, Lawrence, Pictou and Louis, Montreal, accompanied by Mrs. Mombourquette, Mrs. Elizabeth Mombourquette (daughter-in- law) and son Mark, Quebec.

Richmond Record Saturday Nov 20, 1953 The death of Mark Hearn of Rocky Bay in his 39th year is mourned by his mother, brothers, sisters and friends throughout the community of Rocky Bay and Surrounding districts. An industrious young man, Mark engaged at fishing and was quite successful in this industry and was among the leading fishermen of Isla Madame. A son of Mrs. Mary Hearn and the late Lawrence Hearn; he leaves to mourn besides his mother, two brothers, Wilfred and Alex at home; also six sisters, Mrs. Frank Smith, (Lillian); Mrs. Joe MacDonald, (Cecilia); Mrs. Matthew Dorey, (Emma); Mrs. John Webb, (Theresa); Mrs. Ralph Mudge, (Carolyn); all of Detroit, and Mrs. Robert Bookman, (Ann), of Ashtahula, Ohio. The latter attended the funeral which was held from D’Escousse on Thursday of the past week and was largely attended. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. W.A. Boucher. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.

Richmond Record Saturday Sept 12, 1953 The sudden death of Mrs. Joseph Martell [Marie Yvonne Thibeau] which occurred on Sunday, September 6th came as a great shock to her family and friends. A daughter of the late Capt. And Mrs. Edward Thibeau of Arichat South Side, she was 62 years of age. All her family with the exception of Wallace, who is living in Australia, were present at the funeral which took place at Notre Dame Church. She is survived by her husband and two daughters married in Halifax, and four sons, Francis and Leo reside in Arichat. A sister, Mrs. Joseph Marchand, resides at Arichat, South Side. Chronicle Herald Thursday Nov 30, 1978 ANTIGONISH - Rev. Amable Briand, 97, of the diocese of Antigonish, died Tuesday in R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born in L’Ardoise, Richmond County, he was a son of the late Morris and Mary (Samson) Briand. He attended St. Ann’s College, Church Point, before entering Holy Heart Seminary; Halifax. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1911. Following ordination he served as an assistant in the parishes of Holy Redeemer, Sydney; St. Ann’s Glace Bay; St. Peter’s, Port Hood; St. Joseph’s, Bras d’Or; St. Lawrence, Mulgrave and as parish priest of Immaculate Conception, Main-a-dieu: Immaculate Conception, West Arichat; Holy Cross, Pomquet; St. Joseph’s, St. Joseph du Moine. Following retirement in 1954, he resided for a time at the convent in Margaree Forks. In 1958 he moved to Antigonish serving as assistant chaplain at St. Martha’s Hospital and later as chaplain at R. K. MacDonald Guest Home. The body will be at Holy Guardian Angels Church. L’Ardoise, after 3p.m. today, where a Bible vigil will be held this evening at 8 o’clock. Funeral mass will be Friday at 3 p.m., Bishop William E. Power officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Cape Breton Post Wednesday June 20, 1956 GLACE BAY - Lawrence E. Sampson, 88, well known resident of 215 Cottage Avenue, Dominion, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital Tuesday. He had been ill a long time. A native of L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Mr. Sampson lived in Dominion for 55 years. For 42 years he was employed by Dominion Coal Company in the mine; and retired in 1944. At that time he worked in No. 1B. He was a member of St. Eugene’s parish. Well and favorably known in the community his death is widely mourned. Mr. Sampson is survived by three sons, Harvey Sampson, Gardiner Mines; Fred Sampson and Murdock Sampson, both of Dominion and three daughters, (Katie) Mrs. James Corbett, Dominion; (Florence) Mrs. Graham Nicholson, New Glasgow and Miss Theresa Sampson at home. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. His wife died 25 years ago. The remains are reposing at the family home, 215 Cottage Avenue, Dominion from where the funeral will be held Thursday in time for Mass at St. Eugene’s Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be made in Immaculate Conception cemetery.

Chronicle Herald Wednesday Sept 25, 1974 ANTIGONISH - Charlie Boudreau, 65, of 183 Main Street, Antigonish, died Monday in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Arichat, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benedict Boudreau. He came to Antigonish at an early age and worked as an orderly in St. Martha’s Hospital for 34 years, retiring in June, 1972. Besides his wife, the former Helen Hern, Arichat, he is survived by a son, John, at home: two brothers, Frederick, West Arichat, Alphonse, Halifax. The body is at Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish. Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Ninian’s Cathedral. Burial will be in parish cemetery.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 27, 1966 Charles N. Pertus, Poulamon, in his 81st year passed away at St. Anne’s Hospital here recently. A highly respected resident of the Northside, the late Mr. Pertus engaged in mill work during his early life he was also a skilled wheel wright and carpenter. He was a forest ranger in Richmond County about thirty years ago and was promoted to Chief Ranger for Cape Breton Island up to his retirement some years ago. The funeral which took place from St. Hyacinth’s Church was largely attended which attested to the esteem in which the deceased was held. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and three sons. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.

Chronicle Herald Monday Aug 1, 1966 L’ARDOISE - Funeral services will be held here today for Mrs. Annie Peters, 87, widow of Joseph Peters. Requiem high mass will be at Guardian Angel Church at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Born in L’Ardoise, she lived in Sydney the last 13 years with a daughter, Mrs. Herb Lapholder. Surviving are three sons, Thomas, L’Ardoise; Alex and John, Sydney; seven daughters, Mrs. Cecil Smith, and Alvina, Halifax; Mrs. Constance Sanson, Hamilton; Mrs. Fabian Briand, L’Ardoise; Mrs. Lapholder and Mrs. Hubert Pettipas, Sydney. The body is at the Fabian Briand residence, L’Ardoise.

Chronicle Herald Wednesday Dec 5, 1962 L’ARDOISE - The funeral of Mrs. Rose Martell, 79, who died at the home of her daughter, was held from the Roman Catholic Church of the Guardian Angel, L’Ardoise, Richmond County. Interment was in the Church Cemetery. Born in Rockdale, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Martell. Surviving her are three daughters Kay (Mrs. Frank Mombourquette), L’Ardoise, with whom she was residing, Emma, (Mrs. Leo Jeffery), Louisale; Rita (Mrs. Fred Burgess) of Halifax; two sons, Raymond and Edmond of Halifax; a sister, Annie Peters of Sydney. Her husband predeceased her in 1924.

Chronicle Herald Monday Jan 21, 1980 Mrs. Margaret LeRue, 87, of 6151 Pepperell Street, Halifax, died Saturday at the Halifax Infirmary. Born In L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Barrett) Briand. She is survived by two daughters, Theresa (Mrs. Ronald Jollimore) and Blanche (Mrs. Donald Gordon), both of Halifax; three sons, John, Lower Sackville; George, Halifax, and Gordon, Dartmouth; 26 grandchilren and 49 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Augustus; three sons, Gus, Joseph and Gordon, and a daughter, Nora. The body is at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral service will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 27, 1966 William W. Samson, Petit de Grat, passed away recently at the age of 96 at the home of his son Walter W. Samson with whom he had resided for the past 2 years. He is survived by one son, Walter one daughter Mrs. Henry David (Alma) of Petit de Grat. One son Hyacinth, and one daughter, Agnes, predeceased him several years ago. The funeral took place at St. Joseph’s Church with Fr. MacDonald officiating.

Chronicle Herald Dec 18, 1972 LYNCHE RIVER - Ralph Francis Stone, 45, of Lynche River, Richmond County, died Saturday at home. Born at Lynche River, he was a son of Mrs. Christina (MacNeil) Stone and the late Dan L. Stone. Surviving are three brothers, Lawrence, River Bourgeois, Richmond County; Ambrose, Rockdale, Richmond County; Joseph, Sampsonville, Richmond County; and one sister, Peggy (Mrs. Cletus Landry), St. Peter’s, Richmond County. The body is at his residence. Funeral service will be held today at 10 a.m., in Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head, Rev. Duncan Maclntyre officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Richmond Record Saturday Aug 27, 1966 Michael Francis Pottie, age 73, passed away recently at St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney, following a short illness. He served in the Canadian Army overseas during the First World War. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Elizabeth Berthier are seven children; Doris (Mrs. Dr. Floyd Votaw), California; Eva (Mrs. Keith Lohnes), Halifax; Monica (Mrs. Bernard Gareau), Quebec; Helen (Mrs. Joseph Cogswell), Halifax; sons are Allister, Edwin and Maxwell, L’Ardoise; also six sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Adolphus Barron, Mrs. Leonard Harding, Somerville Mass.; Mrs. Robert Moran, Dorchester, Mass.; Mrs. Margaret Josey, Woburn, Mass.; Mrs. Sabine Calnen and Miss Jennie Pottie of Halifax; Alphie, Medford, Mass.; and Helard, Halifax. Thirty-eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held at Guardian Angel Church.

She is survived by one son, Joseph Vincent, Halifax; a brother, Charles, Dartmouth; three sisters, Tilly (Mrs. Cyril Driscoll), Halifax; Mrs. Julia Sampson and Mary (Mrs. Harry Gilbert), Montreal; and one grandchild. The body is at the R. D. Lindsay Funeral Home, Bayers Road, Halifax. Funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine’s Church. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
