SUCCESS STORY:

Santu’s story

Visually impaired since birth, 14-year-old Santu Hantal, a tribal boy, could have never imagined stepping out of the periphery of his home and interacting with anyone apart from his family members. Hailing from Kundra block of koraput District, Santu enrolled in a local school which he never attended owing to his condition. Santu’s school teachers did not pay any heed to his attendance in school. They even confessed to not being given any training to teach children with visual impairment.

When Anandam Kids intervened through the team members of Inclusive Education Programme, Santu began to witness a 360 degree change in his life. Regular counseling was provided to Santu’s parents and his teachers were also imparted skill development training programme where they would use Braille slate, Abacus, Taylor Frame and many more technology-based devices used in the process of teaching the blind.

Today, Santu is getting unique position of his Govt.High school at Digapur (Kundra) after completing primery education in his village school and has mastered in accessing his Brailler provided by Anandam kids supported by Rotary Club, Powai, Mumbai and NAB, Koraput. Santu’s overall performance in school has ameliorated. His dream is to contribute to the society by becoming a school teacher. Santu and his parent extended their heartfelt gratitude to Anandam kids and ICMRTrust for enabling him to study and learn.

Swagatika’s story

Swagatika, total blind since birth is 12 years old, and lives in Matalput of Koraput district, with her parents, and six-year-old brother. Her father is an contract employee in Nalco, , a public sector undertaking. She has been attending her current school for over a year now.

Her parent says, “She needs special school to learn and need a separate set of exams and pass her from class to class”. She never learnt anything. The inclusive education facilitator counseled the child and makes rapport with her and her parent regarding the development of Swagatika. So that, they fully understand their Childs potential and decided to enroll in the school. They didn’t take out to her and not interacting with anyone except her family members.

The facilitator counseled the school authority regarding the child’s inclusion into regular schools, encourage and guide the progress of both the child and the school teachers in the education process. Now, Swagatika cheerfully speaks of her school and friends, “My favorite subject is Hindi. I’ve been learning Braille for less than two years. My inclusive education facilitator is good, who teaches me Braille, Abacus and Taylor Frame. (A piece of equipment for blind children uses to do math, by putting pegs in holes that are marked and appear at certain angles to indicate calculations). I don’t play much with the other kids, just games where I don’t have to run around too much.

9

I have lots of friends, and walk with them to school. I like to watch television when I get back from school.”

Swagatika’s parent and aunty says, “Since the facilitator came, she’s started learning new things and is very responsive. We’ll be happy, if she becomes a singer teacher when she grows up. Or whatever she wants to be!”
