FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 DUBLIN After we pass through customs in Dublin, our private driver/guide will take us for an orientation tour of Dublin city center to see the prominent public buildings, elegant Georgian townhouses and peaceful gardens. Note the contrasts between centuries-old historic places and modern streets, which pulse with activity. We’ll visit the Guinness brewery and learn about its compelling story of invention, passion and belief and, of course, have a taste of the great black elixer. We’ll finish our visit in the roof-top tavern overlooking the city center, where we can sample a pint of ale and enjoy the view of the skyline before lunch at a local pub. Afterwards we will travel to the Feadóg Irish Whistle factory to see how skilled craftsman create the simple six-holed woodwind instrument. After checking in to our castle hotel in Dunboyne, we’ll relax before tonight’s welcome dinner with fellow VPR travelers. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight Dublin area

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6 DUBLIN This morning we continue our exploration of Dublin with our local guide. We’ll visit Trinity College's Old Library to view the Book of Kells, the beautifully illustrated early Christian manuscript of the four gospels and the world-famous Brian Boru harp. One of the oldest extant Irish traditional harps, this is an important symbol of the Irish republic (an image of this exact instrument is prominent on Ireland's coinage, and also on the Guiness stout label!) Next we stop in Saint Patrick's Cathedral, the largest church in the country. Saint Patrick's has contributed much to Irish life throughout its long history. The writer and satirist Jonathan Swift was dean here, and his grave and epitaph are situated near the entrance of the cathedral. The choir school was founded in 1432 and the cathedral choir took part in the first performance of Handel's Messiah in 1742. After the tour, enjoy the remainder of the day exploring more of Dublin at leisure. Tonight we meet piper Joe McKenna for a private concert and dinner in the pub at our hotel. Breakfast, Dinner and Musical Offering Overnight Dublin area

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 BELFAST This morning after breakfast, we'll visit the Francis McPeake School of Music, established in 1977 to restore and unify Belfast through the love of music. Today McPeake’s offers hands-on education in Irish traditional, jazz, and Ulster-Scots music. The school has come a long way from the original six-week tin whistle lessons. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, illustrating the life and the traditions of the people of the north of Ireland. The museum is part of National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland (MAGNI) and has been voted Irish Museum of the Year. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 GIANTS CAUSEWAY ~ DERRY ~ This morning we check out of our hotel and drive north along the coastal road to experience one of Ireland's most scenic routes. We'll see the "Nine Glens of Antrim", green valleys forming a beautiful realm of rivers, waterfalls, wild flowers and birds. We stop to see the Giant's Causeway, an impressive area of 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns formed over 60 million years ago by cooling lava. The Causeway has given rise to many legends and arguments. Was it created by men with picks and chisels, by nature, or by the efforts of a giant? The issue was not settled until 1771 when a Frenchman, Demarest, announced the origin of the causeway to be the result of volcanic action.

We'll continue along the coast to Derry, deriving its name from the old Irish word Daire meaning an oak grove. Upon arrival we embark on a walking tour of the medieval town that still retains its city walls. We end our tour at the Tower Museum, a 16th-century tower house built originally for the local Gaelic chieftains, the O'Donnell’s. Our tour guide will tell us about the many facets of the city's troubled history, including the Siege of Derry in 1688, the events in Ireland leading to partition in the early 1920s and the more recent troubles in Derry. Afterward we continue our drive into the hilly countryside of Donegal and check into our hotel. Breakfast, Dinner and Musical Offering Overnight Donegal

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 DONEGAL After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll enjoy a tour of Donegal. The town is famous for being the former home to the O'Donnell Clan, who played a pivotal role in Irish history. From the 15th to the 17th century, they provided the main opposition to the colonization of Ireland by England. View the , situated on the banks of the River Eske, and the remains of a Franciscan abbey which dates back to the 15th century on the Southern shore of the Bay. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 DRUMCLIFFE ~ MICHEAL COLEMAN’S MUSIC CENTRE After breakfast we check out of our hotel and travel along the coast of to pay homage to the the most celebrated of all of Ireland's poets, W.B Yeats. He was born in Dublin - his mother, however, was from Sligo, where he spent a great deal of time as a child. Yeats visited Sligo frequently - periods which led to poetic inspiration for many of his future works, drawing spiritually from the county's scenic landscape and sense of place. We’ll visit Drumcliffe, by the foot of Benbulben, where the poet is buried. A memorial stone complex built there incorporates an audio-visual presentation about his life. Later, we travel through County Sligo to the town of Gorteen, where we’ll visit Michael Coleman’s Irish Music Centre that celebrates Irish Music, Culture and Heritage as expressed in the South Sligo style of music played by fiddler Michael Coleman. The advent of the Gramophone and 78s had an important influence all over Ireland. Coleman’s records were widely popular and their impact was immediate; musicians extended their repertoire and even imitated his playing. Coleman had the ability to take a common tune and transform it into something special. He played with abandon with that bright fiddle tone and staccato style. We’ll continue our drive to Ennis, where we’ll spend the next three nights. Breakfast, Dinner Overnight Ennis

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 TULLA FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL We will enjoy the day in County Clare at the world-famous Tulla Traditional Music Festival, which will feature Liz Carroll, Matt Molloy, Artie McGlynn, and Mary Bergin, some of the very best in the world on fiddle, flute, guitar, and tin whistle. Tulla is steeped in history; its name 'An Tulach' means hilltop. 'Tulach na nEaspag', meaning hill of the Bishops, indicates its monastic past. Megalithic Tombs, ancient Church sites and Holy Wells abound on top of windswept hills. Breakfast, Traditional Music Festival Overnight Ennis

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 CLIFFS OF MOHER ~ CLARINBRIDGE OYSTER FESTIVAL This morning after breakfast, we’ll drive along the shores of Galway Bay and through the Burren Country, a unique region of limestone hills where many rare flowers thrive in the sheltered crevices. We’ll stop at the Cliffs of Moher, a wall of rock that plunges 700 feet to the churning Atlantic Ocean below. The cliffs consist mainly of beds of Namurian shale and sandstone. Many animals live on the cliffs, most of them birds: 30,000 birds of 29 species. The most interesting are the famous Atlantic Puffins, which live in large colonies at isolated parts of the cliffs. Admire this natural wonder before continuing to County Galway. Clarinbridge lies on Dunbulcan Bay, an outlet to the cold north Atlantic, and some say that the 700 acres of local oyster beds produce the best oysters in the world. It is also said that over 100,000 oysters are eaten each year during the Clarinbridge oyster festival weekend. We will be on hand to help, to take part in the local market, the music, and the fashion parades that are part of this world- famous festival! Breakfast, Farewell Dinner Overnight Ennis
