Scope and Content:

Photos of the Ygnacio and Reginaldo del Valle families, active in California business and government in the 19th century. Includes Ysabel Varela del Valle (Reginaldo’s mother); and other family members. Mostly family photos, including views taken at their Rancho Camulos, located in today’s Ventura County, California. Part of Del Valle Family Papers.

One (1) daguerreotype, numerous tintypes and prints, as well as a few lithographs and engravings. Some prints by photographer A. Frank Randall.

Photos of Charles Fletcher Lummis (writer, journalist, and co-founder of the Southwest Museum) and Alexander Francis Harmer (painter and illustrator) and their respective family members.

Ramona scenes (based on the 1884 popular fictional novel by Helen Hunt Jackson) re- enacted by del Valle family members. Author Jackson stayed at Camulos and may have found inspiration through the landscape and people for the story.

Photos of workmen employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad that was being built through Camulos; some taken with del Valle family members and friends.

Biographical Note:

Ygnacio, (1808-1880), born in Jalisco, Mexico, was the son of Antonio Seferino del Valle (1788-1841), who came to California in the Spanish army in 1819. Ygnacio engaged in the cattle and wine businesses and held at various local and state offices in California. His son, Reginaldo Francisco (1854-1938), was also active in state politics.
