Paper yang berjudul “Idiomatic Expression Found in Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album, 2016. Membahas tentang idiomatic expression dalam 10 lagu Taylor Swift yang dipilih secara acak. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian perpustakaan (library reseach) dan metode dalam menganalisa data adalah menggunakan metode descriptive (descriptive method). Analisis ini dilakukan karena banyak orang yang bisa menyanyikan lagu dalam bahasa Inggris tapi banyak juga di antara mereka tidak mengerti makna dari lagu yang mereka nyanyikan Pengetahuan tentang makna sebuah lagu sangatlah penting dalam menikmati sebuah lagu. Dari analisa data penulis menemukan 8 bentuk idiom yang ada dalam lagu Taylor Swift dan menterjemahkannya kedalam makna yang lain, yaitu: verb and preposition, verbal expression, idiomatic in comparison, adjective phrase, two words verb, adjective and noun, idiomatic expression with preposition, dan idiomatic expression with verb and noun in combination. Dengan kata lain lagu Taylor Swift banyak menggunakan tipe idiom verb and preposition. Secara umum makna dari keseluruhan bisa digambarkan oleh satu kata sehingga mudah dimengerti.

A paper with title “Idiomatic Expression Found in Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album, 2016”. Containing of analysis idiomatic expression in ten of Taylor Swift’s songs, which are chosen randomly. The method of reseach applies in this study is library reseach, and method of analysis the data is descriptive method. The analysis is done because most of people can sing a English song, but most of them can not understand the meaning of the song. However, it is very important to know the meaning for enjoy the song. After analysis the data, the writer found 8 various of idiom in Taylor Swift’s songs, they are: verb and preposition, verbal expression, idiomatic in comparison, adjective phrase, two words verb, adjective and noun, idiomatic expression with preposition, dan idiomatic expression with verb and noun in combination. So the writer concludes that most of Taylor Swift’s song used Verb and preposition form. Generally, whole of the literal meaning can describe by one word so that the meaning is easy to understand.

1.1 The Background of the Study

Language is an abitlity that human being has used to communicate with other human being with signs. For example like words and actions. Language is a really important tool when we are communicating with other human being to understand what things that we are talking about. Language also used as a tool to exprees ideas and feeling. So it means that language is used when we interact with other people to express anything that we meant to. So that is why people want to learn about language.

Palmer (1976: 6) in (Hutabarat, 2:2011) said, “I have suggested that linguistics is the scientific study of language. Linguistics has important role or components of language that include sound, the arrangement of words, and meaning”. In the repertoire of any language, idiomatic expression constitute a special category of lexical items presenting a fixed structure and a spesific behaviour language use.

Idiom is a integral part from any language. Every country has their own idiom words which depends on their culture in the country itself. In English itself, there are more than 15.000 idiom words. Idiom also has a really wide variation.

Feare (1980) said that idiom is an expression which has a different meaning with the original meaning of the individual words in the idioms. For example “stay

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA up”, “at least”, “back out” and “fall behind”. Translating the idioms is not an easy thing to do. We have to be able to recognize and understand,whether a that particular expression is an idiom or not. Idiomatic expressions are also especially used in informal situation, and they have a strange meaning than ordinary words. There are eight types of idiomatic expression based on Lou’s theory, such as Idiomatic expression with adjectives and noun in combination, idiomatic expression with preposition or adverbs, idiomatic expression with two words verbs, idiomatic expression in comparison, idiomatic verbal expression, idiomatic expression with verbs and nouns used together idiomatically, idiomatic adjective phrase, idiomatic expression with verb and preposition.

Music has been called the language of the emotions. Music is also an art dealing with the organization of song into patterns. Song is the most natural form of music. It also has characteristics in understanding the significance of the song.

Furthermore, song can not be separated from rhythm and lyric. Rhythm denotes the orderly movement of music in time.

Generally, language has some functions in communication. One of the function of language is as a aesthetic purposes. Every human being has their own artistry. And language is one of a tool to express the artistry besides of any other art disclosure tools. Lyric included became a part of disclosure tools of artistry.

Lyric is a series of words that had a tone. Lyric is a collective words found in song. Song usually is simpler so that it is easier to understand. On the contrary, the song writer uses idiomatic expression in the lyric. As a result, the hearer gets some trouble in understanding the meaning of lyric. Therefore, it is necessary to

Based on the explanation above, the writer chooses title “ Description of

Idiomatic Expression Found in Taylor Swift’s songs“. In this study, the writer all describe about idiomatic expression more deeply. Idiomatic expression is used to develop idiom which idiomatic expression is generally fixed and sematically opaque or methaporical, but its meaning is different from the usual meaning. In addition the writer hopes that this study has advantages for the reader and himself.

Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer- songwriter. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she moved to Nashville,

Tennessee, at the age of 14 to pursue a career in music country. She signed with the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of

Swift'seponymous debut album in 2006 marked the start of her career as a country music singer. Her third single, "Our Song", made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart. (Wikipedia, 2014)

The album's lead single, "Shake It Off", was released in August 2014 and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Four further singles have been released; "Blank Space" and "Bad Blood" (featuring Kendrick Lamar) both reached number one in the United States. " and "Wildest Dreams" both peaked in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. 1989 sold 1,287,000 copies in the U.S.

The writer chooses the songs from this album because this album is all about Love Story of the writer. This album tells about love story which has some truly meaning. In addition, the songs in this album is interesting to be of the study idiomatic. Since lyrics of song have many idiomatic expressions

Based on the explanation above the writer is interested to discusse this topic in case to find out what kind of type and elements of idiomatic expression found in Taylor Swift’s song, and also to know abaout what the meaning of each idiomatic expressions.

1.2. Problem of the Study

Based on the background of study, automatically this problem of study are as the following :

1. What type of Idiomatic Expression is used in Taylor Swift’s album ?

2. What elements of language are used in forming the idiomatic expression in each type?

3. What is the meaning of each idiomatic expression found in Taylor Swift

‘1989’ album?

The objectives of the study are :

1. To find out what type of idiomatic expression used in Taylor Swift’s album.

2. To know what elements of language are used in forming the idiomatic expression in each type.

3. To know the meaning of each idiomatic expression used in Taylor Swift’s album.

1.4. The Scope of the Study

There are eight types of idiomatic expression based on Lou’s theory, such as idiomatic expression with adjectives and noun in combination, idiomatic expression with preposition or adverbs, two word verbs, idiomatic expression in comparison, idiomatic verbal expression, verbs and noun used together idiomatically, idiomatic adjective phrase, verb and preposition. The scope of the study is focus on what elements that used in forming the idiomatic expression in those songs.

1.5. The Significant of the Study

This paper is expected to add the writer’s knowledge and the student of language in terms of idiomatic expression, to help the student or reader to find

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is discusing about the purpose of review literature, a review of the literature to describe the idiomatic expression found in Taylor Swift’s album.

2.1. Idiomatic Expression

According to Chaer (2007) idiom is an expression whose meaning can not be predicted through its individual parts both lexically or grammatically.

Idiomatic Expression is a rendition of a combination of words that have a figurative meaning. The figurative meaning is comprehended in regard to a common use of the expression that is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words which it is made. Idioms are numerous and they occur frequently in all languages. There are estimated to be at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions in the English language.

Accoding to (Feare, 1980) in Shahron, (73: 2013) idiom also loaded with cultural content and has very wide variation. Feare (1980) says, “The Idiom is an expression roomates had a special meaning and this meaning can not be understood completely by looking at the individual words in the idioms.”

Idiomatic expressions are necessarily the most important thing to know in

English, or any language. They’re probably not as useful as memorizing irregular verbs, conditionals or prepositions. But people nowdays usually use an Idiomatic

Expression when have a conversation with other people.

According to Tressler (1940:379) says that an idiom, an expression peculiar to a language, either violates the laws of grammar or has a meaning as a whole entirely different from that obtained by puttig together the meanings of its parts.

Idioms are important because they are the very life of the language. A free use of these homely, concise, vigorous expressions peculiar to the language makes English more natural and forceful.

2.2. Type of Idiomatic Expression

There are eight type of Idiomatic Expression based on Lou’s Theory, such us; idomatic expression with adjectives and noun in combination, idiomatic expression with preposition or adverbs, idiomatic expression in comparison, idiomatic verbal expression, verb and noun used together idiomatically, idiomatic adjective phrase and verb and preposition.

This type of idiomatic expression is formed by an Adjectives then following by the noun. For examples; sick beat

This type of idomatic expression is formed by an preposition or adverbs as the idiom. For examples, down and out, in and out, off an on and upside down.

3. Idiomatic Expression in Comparison

This type of idiomatic expression is u sing a comparison about a thing with others things as the idiom. For examples, cool as a cat, cute as a butto and busy as a bee.

4. Idiomatic Expression Verbal Expression

This type of idiomatic expression is using verbal as the idiom. For examples, bet your bottom dollar, bird brain, black and blue and let by gones be by gones.

5. Idiomatic Expression with Verb and Noun Used Together Idiomatically

6. Idiomatic Expression with Adjective Phrase

This type of idiomatic expression is using a adjective phrase as the idiom.

For examples, at all, at least, by the way, free and easy and black out.

7. Idiomatic Expression with Two Words Verb

This type of idiomatic expression is formed by two kind of verbs that used together. For examples, cut and run and forgive and forget.

8. Idiomatoc Expression with Verb and Preposition

This type of idiomatic expression is formed by using Verb and

Preposition together as the idiom. For examples, Act on, bail out, beat up, call down, carry on and cave in.

2.3. Elements of Idiomatic Expression

Idiomatic expression is formed by some elements that support that idiom. There are some idioms that need to use that elements to complete the

2.4. Relevant of The Study

Idiomatic Expression has been written by Nasrul Akbar (2011) entitle

“Analysis Idiomatic Expression in Celine Dion’s Songs”. Akbar (2011) used the libarary research as the research method in his study. After analyzing the data, he found that there are 44 idiomatic expression that found in Celine Dion’s songs and he also the figurative of speech is the most dominant used in the Celine

Dion’s songs.

Evelina Tambunan (2013) entitle Idiomatic Word Used In Reader’s

Digest Magazine. Tambunan (2013) applied the linguistic study with the purpose to get the data. The technique that was taken by her to be used was collecting texts method. In order to get the data, the writer first read the Reader’s Digest magazine. After Analyzing the data she found two types of idioms as proposed by F.R. Palmer. Based on meaning, Dominantly the type of idioms used is the

Semi Opaque meaning one, that is, the idiom whose meaning is related to the meaning of the individual words.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Because of those two papers mentioned, the writer really feel interested with this topic and really want to analyze Taylor Swift’s songs. The Method that the writer used in this study is also the same that is Library research.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA III. METHOD OF THE STUDY

3.1. Research Design

In this study, the writer used lybrary reseach. Nawawi ( 1991:61) says that there are two methods of reseach those are library and field reseach methods. The first is done by collecting the some data from books, newspaper, magazines, journal and other writen sources, and the seconds is using some questions to someone or a certain group of people in collecting data.

The writer used library research to analyze the topic. The writer collected some data from the lyric of the song and some data from the internet to support the analysis. The writer tried to analyze Taylor Swift’s songs in 1989 album as the object of the study. Which are the writer tried to analyze what of type, elements that used in the song and also to find out the meaning of each idiomatic expressions that found in the song.

3.2 Data and Data Source

Data are the lyrics found in Taylor Swift album as the source of the data.

There are 10 songs that the writer used as the object of the study. They are Bad

Taylor Swift Born on December 13, 1989, Pennsylvania. Taylor Swift's family moved to nearby Wyomissing where she started crafting songs at age 5, and at age 16, released her debut album. Hits like "Love Story" and "You Belong

With Me" appealed to country and pop fans alike and helped fuel the multiplatinum success of her albums, with Fearless the 2009 top-seller. Swift later became a pop juggernaut with the 2014 album 1989. She has won many awards, including several Grammys, and modeled for Cover Girl.

3.3. Data Colecting Method

The collecting data is one of the important thing in research. In this study, the writer used written method in collecting the data an analyze the Taylor

Swift’s song from some aspects, such as The type of Idiomatic expression, the element that used in each idiomatic expression and also the meaning of each idiomatic expression. The writer collect some references from some books, and papers that related to this topic such as, Petunjuk Praktis Menggunakan Kamus

Bahasa Inggris by Rachmat Taufiq and English in Action book by Tressler.

3.4. Data Analysis Method

1. Reading the lyrics text

2. Identifying the Idiomatic Expression from each songs

3. Classifying the Idiom into a table

4. Analyzing the Data

5. Finding out the result.

4.1. Data This album consists of 14 songs which are the writer found there are 10 songs that are identified of idiomatic expression. They are Bad blood , Blank

Space, All You Had Do Was Stay, Style, Wonderland, This love, Out of The

Woods, Wildest Dreams, Shake it Off, and I Wish You Would.

From ten songs mention above there are,

1. Bad blood = 6 idiomatic expressions

2. Blank Space = 9 idiomatic expressions

3. Out of The Woods = 9 idiomatic expressions

4. All You Had Do Was Stay = 7 idiomatic expressions

1989 album. In this chapter, type, element and meaning are described as the following.

4.2. Type, Element, and Meaning

There are 8 types of idiomatic expressions based on Lhou’s theory found in 10 songs. Thet are idiomatic expression with verb and preposition, idiomatic expression with adjective and noun, idiomatic expression with two word verb, idiomatic verbal expression, idiomatic expression in comparison, idiomatic expression with verb and noun used together idiomatically, idiomatic expression with adjectives phrase, idiomatic expression with prepositions or adverb.

Idiomatic expression is formed by some important elements that are used as the part of idiomatic expression themselves. Some parts that formed the idiomatic expression are verb, adjectives, noun, preposition, comparison, phrase, and averbs. Those elements are able to use in combination of one element to other elements depending on what type of the idiomatic expression we want to use.

Idiomatic expression has the different meaning from the original meaning. It has a special meaning that can be translated into the origanl one.

Because of that we have to understand and memorize the idiomatic expression so that we know what truly the meaning is.
