Great-tailed Grackle Quiscalus mexicanus hypothetical, unassisted occurrence questionable Great-tailed Grackle is resident to N and S America, from the s. U.S. to nw. Peru (AOU 1998). Populations expanded greatly during the 20th century, and vagrants have been recorded N to s. Canada, but it is not considered a highly migratory species. On O'ahu, at least four Great-tailed Grackles have been observed. The first two records involved long-staying birds: a female on the Waipi'o Peninsula, Pearl Harbor, 26 May 1980-14 Jan 1995 (E 44:98, 47:95, 48:114; HRBP 0201, 0236-0237, 0552-0553, 0958- 0959) and a male along the waterfront of downtown Honolulu, most frequently at Ala Moana Beach Park and on Sand I., 26 May 1988-12 Jun 1995 (E 48:78; HRBP 0834- 0837, 0895), which was found dead in Jul (specimen to BYUH collection). The female was missed for long periods (notably a three-year stretch in 1988-1991) promoting speculation that two birds were involved, and two males were reported for a period in about 1992 by workers on Sand I who regularly fed bread to the original male grackle, but we consider only two individuals during this period as substantiated to species. Subsequently, in 2010-2016, at least two and possibly additional male Great-tailed Grackles were seen at various locations around O'ahu. The first male was reportedly rescued from fishing-line entanglement near a barge near Aloha Tower, Honolulu 16 Jun 2010, and later observed nearby. On 28 Mar 2011 a male was found at Ala Moana Beach Park with a missing right foot (HRBP 6776-6777) and it was speculated that it may have lost its foot in the previous fishing-line encounter at Aloha Tower. -

City Branding: Part 2: Observation Towers Worldwide Architectural Icons Make Cities Famous What’s Your City’s Claim to Fame? By Jeff Coy, ISHC Paris was the world’s most-visited city in 2010 with 15.1 million international arrivals, according to the World Tourism Organization, followed by London and New York City. What’s Paris got that your city hasn’t got? Is it the nickname the City of Love? Is it the slogan Liberty Started Here or the idea that Life is an Art with images of famous artists like Monet, Modigliani, Dali, da Vinci, Picasso, Braque and Klee? Is it the Cole Porter song, I Love Paris, sung by Frank Sinatra? Is it the movie American in Paris? Is it the fact that Paris has numerous architectural icons that sum up the city’s identity and image --- the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, Notre Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge and Palace of Versailles? Do cities need icons, songs, slogans and nicknames to become famous? Or do famous cities simply attract more attention from architects, artists, wordsmiths and ad agencies? Certainly, having an architectural icon, such as the Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, put Paris on the world map. But all these other things were added to make the identity and image. PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO Island of Oahu Prepared by the Friends of the East-West Center ________________________________________________________________ ALA MOANA CENTER 955-9517 One of the world’s largest shopping centers with over 200 shops and 25 restaurants. On the ground level, the Center Stage features regular and special attractions of music and dance. The ground level exhibit area features frequent art and culture shows. 1450 Ala Moana Boulevard. Open Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. ALOHA TOWER 528-5700 Honolulu’s famous landmark on Pier 9 is open to visitors and offers excellent views of the downtown and harbor areas. The observation balcony is noted for its four-faced clock and “Aloha” sign. The 184-foot tower was, for decades, Honolulu’s tallest building. The only way up to the 10th floor observation deck is via a small, vintage elevator. Once at the top you’ll be greeted with sweeping views of Honolulu and signage which points out the various landmarks. The Aloha Tower Observation Deck is open daily from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission is free. ARIZONA MEMORIAL 422-0561 The USS Arizona Memorial, a National Park Service site, spans more than 10.5 acres and is located on the Pearl Harbor Navy Base on Oahu. The memorial consists of a visitor center, which houses several self-guided exhibits and attractions, including a museum, bookstore, a waterfront exhibit allowing visitors to visualize the events of December 7, a remembrance exhibit, and a seating area where visitors can see a 23- minute documentary on the attack of Pearl Harbor. -

I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture. -
