    EUROPEAN TRIATHLON UNION ETU EVENT STATUS: 2001 – 2016 1. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this document is to provide details about the status of the past and current ETU Events, including strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations will follow each section to provide an opportunity for further discussion with ITU and at the various levels at ETU. ETU main goals on events are: a) Increase the general participation of triathlon and all related multisport in all age-group categories within Europe; b) Provide opportunities for young athletes to access the sport; c) Keep gender balance on all level of competitions; d) Provide a pathway to grow from youth athlete to elite athletes competing at the Olympic Games. 2. GENERAL: A thorough review of the Competition System is required due to: a) the growing number of ITU events in Europe; b) the increased number of participants in all categories; c) the growing demands of Paratriathlon being integrated in the sport; d) the increased number of private international event organising companies wanting to align with our system. 3. ETU TRIATHLON EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: is the main event of ETU. The event package consist of the following races: elite Olympic Distance Triathlon, the junior Sprint Triathlon event, the Age Group OD and sprint Triathlon, the elite and junior mixed relay, an opening ceremony and the organisation of the ETU Annual General Assembly. ETU is asking to pay an event fee and prize money for both the elite individual event as the elite mixed relay. Having the event live broadcasting is recommended but not mandatory. This means that the LOC has to invest a substantial amount into this organisation.

    August 30, 2017 Going long on home course Phillip Rodda AFTER a breakthrough Mooloolaba Triathlon victory, Buderim’s Annelise Jefferies is chasing another home success Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast. The former world under-23 duathlon champion has switched to long-course racing and has been refreshed by the change of approach. “A couple of years ago when I was doing some riding training on the road, I realised how much I enjoyed doing longer distances,” she said. Annelise trains about 20 hours a week across the three disciplines and crams in part-time university studies and work as a receptionist. Now 24, she has gained confidence from her Mooloolaba success but also understands the importance of finding the balance between life and sport.     MEDIA RELEASE March 8, 2015 Jake Birtwhistle completes another rare National title double in Wollongong Tasmania’s favourite triathlon son Jake Birtwhistle has completed a rare feat, completing a clean sweep of Triathlon Australia’s major National Championships at the 2015 Wollongong OTU Sprint Triathlon Oceania Cup today. The 20-year-old is believed to be the first triathlete to win the Elite and Under 23 Australian Standard (Olympic) Distance and Elite and Under 23 Sprint Distance Championships in one season. The boy from Launceston, who won the Standard Distance National and Oceania championships in his return home to nearby Devonport a fortnight ago was untroubled to add the Sprint crowns to his trophy cabinet in his adopted home city in Wollongong today. Birtwhistle, who trains as part of Jamie Turner’s Wollongong Wizard’s group was 20th out of the water after the 750m swim in Belmore Basin, setting up a perfect race. The lanky former distance track and Cross country champion had no trouble jumping onto the lead group on the bike as the field rode 20km around the Wollongong foreshores before heading home on the five kilometre run to the finish. The ITU World Junior silver medallist from 2014 sped out of transition from bike to run and despite the efforts of close friend and rival Tyler Mislawchuk from Canada, Birtwhistle was never headed. In the end he sealed victory in 54 minutes 44 seconds from Germany’s Christopher Hettich (55:21) with Mislawchuk (55.29) third in the Oceania Cup with Birtwhistle taking the two National crowns – the Elite from Queensland pair Drew Box (55:45) and Gold Coaster Daniel Coleman (55:54) and the Under 23 from Box and Victorian Joel Tobin White (55.56).

It was an understandable reaction for an athlete who has spent her entire competitive career in virtual obscurity, performing in dark suburban roller arenas in front of a few dozen spectators rather than the standing room only crowd that filled the venue on Sunday to a cheer her sixth place finish. “When I saw people sitting down an hour before we started skating I knew it was going to be something big,” the American said. “I was shocked people were sitting down before I skat- ed, people are sitting down to watch us...oh my gosh. “That was probably the biggest crowd I have ever skated in front of before in my life. “A regular competition for me would basically be in a regular roller rink and the crowd might be maybe 20-25 at most. “We never skate in a big venue like this. The Pan American Games, this is like our Olympics.” The Pan Am Games is as big as it gets for the roller figure skaters, who get to march in open- ing and closing ceremonies alongside 7,000 oth- er athletes, live in the village and soak up a fac- simile of the Olympic experience that for the moment remains a distant dream. “I felt amazing; I have never had everyone out there cheering for me so there was just a lot of energy out there today,” said Canada’s Kailah Macri.
