CARAVEL CAPTURES THE CARESS MARACUJA UPSETS Caravel (Mizzen Mast) carried the colors of her breeder, MALATHAAT IN CCA OAKS trainer and now co-owner Elizabeth Merryman to six victories in her eight previous starts. Irad Ortiz Jr. climbed aboard Caravel sporting the silks of her new part-owner Bobby Flay for this Saratoga debut and she took her career to the next level with a decisive score in the GIII Caress S. Saturday. Backed to even-money favoritism off a pair of stakes wins, Caravel was away well from her rail draw and settled to track from third off pacesetting New York native Robin Sparkles (Elusive Quality), who zipped through a :21.64 first quarter. Robin Sparkles turned for home in front with Jakarta (Bustin Stones)--who was only running for purse money--just off her flank and Caravel ranging up in the three path. Caravel found another gear in mid-stretch, powering past the leader to win going away. In Good Spirits (Ghostzapper) rallied late to be second and Robin Sparkles held third. Cont. p6

All four broke in tandem with Malathaat assuming a narrow lead rounding the clubhouse turn. Maracuja kept the favorite honest through an opening quarter in :23.38 with second-choice Clairiere (Curlin) and Rockpaperscissors (Distorted Humor) just off their heels. Clairiere moved into second with Maracuja shuffled back to a joint third as the half went in :47.13. Rockpaperscissors called it a day at the three-eighths pole, quickly backing up, while Maracuja kicked into high gear, setting her sights on the top two. Malathaat and Clairiere turned for home together with Maracuja ranging up menacingly two paths to their outside. The Shadwell Stable-owned filly dug deep to maintain her narrow advantage on the fence as her two foes continued to give her hell. Surprisingly, it was Clairiere who was first to wave the white flag with just over a sixteenth left to run, leaving the shortest and longest shots on the board to fight it out. Malathaat and Maracuja battled stride-for-stride to the wire with the latter finding an extra burst in the shadow of the wire, forging ahead just in time to deny the chalk by a head. Caravel | Sarah Andrew

AThe whole turn, she was on the bridle waiting for the time to go,@ Ortiz Jr. said. AI wanted to make sure to go around the horses like she did last time at Monmouth [winning the Goldwood S. June 25]. I was able to get in the clear and as soon as I asked, she gave me a really good kick--a good turn-of-foot.@ AI don=t know if she=s improved, but I think people understand how she needs to be ridden, and the trip is better now,@ Merryman said. AI said to [Irad Ortiz, Jr.] just be as quiet as you can leaving the gate because the least twitch of the reins and she=s going. It=s pretty amazing. You watch Saratoga and just think it=s the place to be. To come up here with a filly like that, it=s amazing.@ With Flay now the majority owner, Caravel will be transferred to Graham Motion following this victory. AHe=s watched her train pretty much every day. He=s just been so nice and classy and sweet about her,@ Merryman said of Motion. ABobby Flay now owns a majority interest in her and we made a plan when he was interested in buying to make that change. That was something I was in agreement with from the time of the sale of the majority of her. Graham is in the next barn to me at Fair Hill [in Maryland]. It=ll all be good.@ She continued, AHopefully, the goal is the [GI] Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint and Graham has so much experience going that route. It seemed like a really smart thing to do from my perspective as well. Not that I don=t think I could handle it, but with the change in the ownership, Graham has a system that works great and he=s been through all that.@ Opening her account with a trio of victories, including the Lady Erie S. last summer, Caravel checked in third in that Pimlico's Hilltop S. in October and returned to winning ways in the state- bred Malvern Rose S. back at Presque Isle Oct. 22. Third in Belmont's License Fee S. Apr. 30, the PA-bred rallied to victory in The Very One S. in Baltimore May 14 and romped in Monmouth's Goldwood S. June 25. Cont. p7 HONOR CODE A.P. She was also third in the 2015 G1 Pour Moi Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary. James Aloysius brought $200,000 from Oracle Bloodstock, agent, on behalf of West Paces Racing LLC at last year's Keeneland September sale. AHe's named after the owner [Larry Connolly]'s brother who passed away and another friend of theirs,@ Gargan said. AOne of them was named James and the other's last name was Aloysius.@ As for what's next for the equine James Aloysius, Gargan said, AI don't run back fast--I run every seven-eight weeks. We're probably gonna aim to get a race into him towards the end of the meet. Hopefully, if everything goes as planned, that's what we're shooting for.@ Gargan concluded, AWe like him a lot. James Aloysius continued to rally nicely in the lane despite repeatedly getting in and cut the final margin to 3/4 of a length. He earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort. AHe's a nice colt, just a little green,@ trainer Danny Gargan said. AI'm not really a first-time starter kind of person. We told the jock to break and get a good position and just make sure that he's running turning for home. Luis said if he had hit him left- handed instead of right-handed, he would've won the race. He just shied from it, and got on top of those other horses for a minute. He's a pretty talented colt.@ He continued, AChad told me probably six weeks before the Danny Gargan | Sarah Andrew race that the Kitten's Joy was a nice horse and that he thinks he's gonna be a really good horse.
