Programme description

The program is directed at foreign students who wish to learn about Northern through different activities. The programme is suitable for everyone working with human relations, for example in schools, in the tourism-industry, arts and culture, health services etc.

The students participate in activities encouraging experience and learning. The learning outcomes through activities in different subjects as geology, outdoor activities, art, literature, culture, and experience-based pedagogy are to be articulated in essays and the students are encouraged to articulate this unique adventure knowledge based on their experience in essay-writing.

The programme consists of 3 modules (10 ECTS each):

Learning outcomes

The three different courses that the programme consists of all have different learning outcomes. However, they all focuse on the landscape of through geo, art-, and literature-experiences. Through different activities the students will gain a consciousness and insight of the identy of people, the North Norwegian society, and the nature people are adapting to.

Adventure Knowledge provides a great specialisation for students who wish to work with programme development, planning or implementation across a range of fields in both public and private sectors,including tourism, culture, social work and education. The package provides a unqiue experience for teachers.

Further education

The semester package can be included in a Bachelor programme.

Study abroad

The programme Adventure Knowledge is directed at foreign students. Norwegian students are also encouraged to join the study programme.

Costs

The students are charged for accommodation costs: approximately 300 NOK per night on compulsory field-trips specified in the course descriptions. There are no additional costs, except semester registration fee and course literature.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

If the applicant does not fulfill the requirements for the Higher Education Entrance Qualification but has experience-based competence relevant to the field of study, he or she may apply for recognition of this competence in order to fulfill the admission requirements.

Course description

Students participate in recreation- based activities such as excursions and field trips and get acquainted with characteristic landscape forms and types of outdoor activities through their own active participation and subject development. Every student reflects on those adventure experiences from his/her own academic starting point, and writes an essay seeing his/her experience in relation to the knowledge the student has developed through previous experience. For example a student of nursing can connect experience to a public health improvement perspective, a student of tourism to ecological or geo-tourism, and a teacher training student to outdoor- based teaching.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: On successful completion of the course the students will: Be able to recognize the most common local rocks Be able to recognize and describe the formation history of characteristic small- and great-scaled landforms Be able to identify and collect geo-data from glacial activity Be able to carry out easy forward mapping of two biotopes; the river and the tidal flat Know how climatic changes inflict the bio-environment of a chosen biotope Have experience from typical Norwegian outdoors activities

Skills: Students should after successful completion of module 1 be able to: Arrange experience-based learning-activities outdoors Reflect on how experience-based learning outdoors can be utilized in their own profession Have basic knowledge of the landscape- forming processes of a coastal Alpine landscape, exemplified by the Region of Have basic knowledge of two biotopes in The Salten Region

Teaching activities and methods

The course focuses on active learning methods. Learning through fieldwork is therefore a central teaching method. These activities will be followed up by lectures to refine these experiences. In order for the student to be allowed to hand in the final exam, the following things need to be registered as completed/approved: 1. Participation in field-trips 2. Participation in lectures 3. A reflection journal, covering all excursions and fieldtrips.

Reflections on activities are enhanced by writing short field-notes from the various field trips, and these provide the basis for the exam which takes the form of an essay.

The students participate in different field trips suc as:

A come-together tour Sea-rafting in the Saltenfiord and Saltstraumen-maelstrom A field trip from Bodø to Engabreen, an outlet glacier of Svartisen Coastal cave, with various spectacular landforms, karst-landscape and the glacier itself will be visited Cave surveying in the Inner Salten region A Skjerstad-fiord round-trip following the path of The Main Ice sheet during the last glaciation period Other short field trips are arranged

Course description

The students participate in experienced- based learning activities such as excursions and field trips and get acquainted with literature, culture, and art in Nordland through their own active participation and subject development. Every student reflects on the adventure experiences from his/her own cultural starting point, and writes an essay seeing his/her experience in relation to own cultural background and perspective. By comparing the cultural trends of one's own country with new experiences from Nordland, the students can obtain new and unique knowledge in various academic fields to reflect on.

Open for qualified students. The dubject can be taken separately or as part of the programme Adventure Knowledge.

Mode of delivery

Face-to-face.

In order for the student to be allowed to hand in the final exam, the following things need to be registered as completed/approved: 1. Participation in field-trips 2. Participation in lectures 3. A reflection journal, covering all excursions and fieldtrips.

The final exam consists of a scientific essay in the form of a one week written home-exam with the regular Norwegian grading system (A-F).

The course focuses on active learning methods. Learning through field-working is therefore a central teaching method. These activities will be followed up by lectures to refine the experience, and also by meetings with artists in the area.

Reflections on the activities are enhanced through essay-writing. Short field-notes from the different field-trips also form part of this learning- process. The field trips are compulsory.

An introductory tour to Kjerringøy A field trip from Bodø to Hamarøy Visiting The Hamsun Centre at Presteid and Hamsun¿s childhood home at Hamsund, visiting galleries and experiencing outdoor art in Tranøy. Visiting Arran ¿ The Lule Sámi Centre in Tysfjord A field trip from Bodø to Lofoten Visiting galleries, The Northern Art Centre and site specific art, meeting with active artists living on the islands and making land art together

Course description

Students participate in experienced-based learning activities such as excursions and fieldtrips in Bodø and the Helgeland archipelago and coastal district. The aim is to get acquainted with the art, architecture and cultural heritage in the county of Nordland through the student¿s own active participation and subject development. Each student develops a reflection journal, documenting their experiences and reflections connected to the field trips, excursions and curriculum. And, each student reflects on the adventure experiences based on his/her own cultural and academic viewpoint through a final essay discussing this experience in relation to their own cultural background.

Costs

Students at University of Nordland pay no tuition fees. If the host university has an exchange agreement with UiN, students waive the semester registration fee as well.

The students participate in the following field trips: An excursion to central institutions and buildings in Bodø: o Contemporary art galleries and cultural heritage sites, central architectural sites in Bodø, and the new site for The House of Culture in Bodø.

A field trip from Bodø to the Helgeland Archipelago and Coastal District o Museums, churches, and cultural heritage sites on the mainland and the islands.
