Sponsored by Students for a Democratic Society, the Washington, DC march of 17 March 1965 drew more than 25,000 people to protest the Vietnam War. One of the chief organizers was a member of the SDS National Council named Charles Capper. Then an undergraduate at the Johns Hopkins University, Capper took an informal “leave” from his studies to devote himself to promoting the march. While doing so in New York City at a Carnegie Hall rally, the twenty- one-year-old Capper shared the stage with Senator Ernest Gruening and the prominent radical historian from Yale, Stoughton Lynd. The 1965 march was later eclipsed in historical memory by the larger march of 1967 memorialized by Norman Mailer’s Armies of the Night, but the earlier one was pivotal in the development of the New Left and in the growth of the larger antiwar movement. Capper, known to readers of Modern Intellectual History as one of this journal’s founding editors and as the justly celebrated author of the standard biography of Margaret Fuller, was right in the middle of it.1 And then he went to Berkeley and distinguished himself as a leader of the Trotskyist movement there. Who knew? Well, I did.
