Another massive entry of calves today saw the first quality calves at a ‘straight price’ with the second and third quality a bit more difficult to place.

Overall top call of the day was £480 for the best of a nice run of 10 – 12 week old Blonde d'Aquitaine bulls and heifers on behalf of B G Nicholls of Parracombe, Exmoor with the same vendor at £460 for Simmentals with 10 week old Aberdeen Angus steers from Roy, Paul and Janet Herniman of Kingscott reaching £318.

The champion calf of the day was a fantastic 5 week old British Blue bull in from Mike Hopper & Family of Whitstone going off to its new home with the Holland Family of Dolton. Alan Pomeroy of West Putford saw a ‘proper trade’ for his smart line up which topped at £422 (4 week old British Blue bulls) with Messrs Veale of Halwill at £420 and P H Collins Partnership at £415.

Jeremy Ovens & Family saw their British Blue bull to £408 with the pick of a nice run of 16 calves in from Trevor & Julie Howe of Ponsanooth, which topped at £370. Some wonderful Charolais calves came in from Les Higgins of St Neot topped at £365 whilst the best Limousin calves hit £370 for Messrs Furse of Ashwater. Holstein bulls met limited interest with the best at £115 for Nigel Cleave with younger types at £85 for Nick Baker, £60 for Johnny Britton and £54 for W J Hobbs of Morwenstow. Plain Holsteins between £15 - £25.

Best heifers hit £322 for British Blue heifers in from P H Collings Partnership with Mike Chugg of Marwood at £310 and the pick of a quality run of Limousin heifers (5 weeks old) at £285 in from the Hutton Brothers of Rutleigh Ball, Hatherleigh. Messrs Higgins & Son of topped the Charolais pens at £220 (x2) (4 weeks old) with best baby Aberdeen Angus heifers at £220 from Tony Mitchell of St kew, .

The Genus £25 vouchers were won by JR & MJ Ovens, Brendon Farm, Halwill with a British Blue Top 10 bull calves averaging £403.80 X bull calf sired by Brookfield Top 10 heifer calves averaging £296.50 Dev fetching £408. The heifer Top 10 Holstein bulls averaging £84.20 section was won by KM Furse, East Venn, Ashwater with a British Blue calf sired by Rostrevor Gabriel making £225.

A wonderful entry of store cattle this week saw the ring packed. A shortage of stronger feeding cattle and a strong finished price saw plenty of steers over £1000 to a top of £1190 for a 21 month old British Blue steer from Mr P Hobbs of Wrasford who sold other bunches to £1095. Stronger Dairy x British Blues from Mr A Palmer of Corfcott topped at £1080. Younger 18 – 20 month old British Blues from Messrs Daniel of North Tamerton reached £1000. Simmentals from Mr S Goodman of Launceston sold to £1045. Stronger Continental heifers in demand with a top call of £995 for a 24 month old from Mr P Hobbs of Wrasford. 22 month old British Blue x Holstein steers from Mr W Prouse of Torrington sold to £985 and more required.

Strong Holsteins sold well to a top of £1080 for a 24 month old steer from J Chamberlain of Shebbear. Plenty of 15 – 18 month old Holsteins at £550 - £700.

A massive trade for single suckled steers, 15 months old with a consignment of 15 Limousins from Messrs Uglow of Clubworthy averaging £952. Single suckled 15 month old Devon steers from Messrs Haste of Shebbear to £990 and more required.

Young Native steers sought after. 14 month old steers to £550 – £700 and 7 month old steers to £450 – £500. More required.

Receptionist

The role: Kivells are looking for a full time Market Receptionist at the busy Holsworthy Livestock Market.

The successful candidate will work on reception together with undertaking administration for the

agricultural department. Likely duties will include assisting clients both face to face and by telephone,

supporting the cattle auctioneer, preparing catalogues for sale, market reports and advertising.

The candidate: will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn. The successful candidate will

possess excellent customer service skills, be organised, computer literate and be able to work on their own.

A background knowledge in agriculture is an advantage.

This is an interesting and varied role requiring a candidate with a strong work ethic and the ability to adapt.

Immediate start available.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.15pm. Additional hours for some Saturday sales will also be

required.
