Rosina Byrne, IHM Arranged by: William Weber, C.M.F.C. |3| THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES THE PRESIDENT AND FACULTY OF MARYWOOD UNIVERSITY SALUTE Stephen Karam, B.A. On this fifteenth day of May, two thousand twenty-one, Marywood University is pleased to honor Stephen Karam for his award-winning and critically acclaimed work as a playwright, and, more recently, as a screenwriter. Mr. Karam’s path to success began in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he was born and raised just a few blocks away from Marywood University; in fact, his mom, Marie, taught a few language classes at Marywood. His small- town upbringing would later influence his writing, although his journey from Green Ridge kid to New York City playwright was not necessarily predictable. Mr. Karam’s local background included acting at Scranton High School, working with the Scranton Public Theatre, and entering (and sometimes winning) contests for young playwrights as a teenager. The notion of pursuing his theatrical interests professionally began as a dream. Yet, the heart knows what it knows, and he followed his heart to Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts Literature and Culture in English. After graduating from Brown in 2002, Mr. Karam became an apprentice at the world-famous Utah Shakespeare Festival. There, he met P.J. Paparelli, with whom he co-wrote Columbinus, which is loosely based on the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Columbine, Colorado. This play, produced by the New York Theatre Workshop in 2006, was his first professional production. Mr. Karam still held a regular day job and continued working on his plays on the side until 2011, when Sons of the Prophets premiered in Boston. From there, he went on to make a name for himself as a full-fledged playwright. Now, the kid from Green Ridge is a Tony Award-winning author of The Humans, Sons of the Prophet, and Speech & Debate. Mr. Karam also has received two Drama Critics Circle Awards for Best Play and an OBIE Award for his work, and he is a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He recently directed his first feature film, a rethought version of The Humans for A24 films, to be released this year. He wrote a film adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull, starring Annette Bening, which was released by Sony Picture Classics. His adaptation of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard premiered on Broadway as part of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2016 season. Recent honors include the inaugural Horton Foote Playwriting Award, the inaugural Sam Norkin Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Lucille Lortel Award, Drama League Award, and Hull-Warriner Award. Mr. Karam fully acknowledges those who taught him and encouraged him to follow his passion, leading to his success on the stage and screen. Indeed, he has come full circle, shaping the dreams and passions of others by teaching graduate playwriting courses at The New School in New York City. It is fitting, therefore, that Marywood University, whose mission of educational excellence in the liberal arts tradition is long-standing, should salute Stephen Karam, whose life and energies have been devoted to these pursuits. Three generations of the Blake family from Scranton, PA gather for Thanksgiving in a tiny NYC apartment. Over toasts, turkey and tough love, family hopes and myths are shared and shattered. This funny and heart- tugging play was hailed on Broadway two seasons ago. In addition to The Humans, Stephen Karam’s plays include Sons Of The Prophet (Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist), and Speech & Debate. His adaptation of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard premiered on Broadway as part of Roundabout’s 2016 season; his film adaptation of The Seagull starring Annette Bening premiered in 2018. Recent honors include two Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Lucille Lortel Award, a Drama League Award, and a Hull-Warriner Award. Stephen is a graduate of Brown University and grew up in Scranton, PA. The Humans had its world premiere at the American Theatre Company in Chicago in 2014. The Off-Broadway production opened in 2015 and it transferred to Broadway in 2016. The Off-Broadway production won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and an Obie Award for Playwriting. The late PJ Paparelli helmed both the production and the theater company at the time. As a frequent collaborator of Stephen’s, PJ first took note of Karam at the Utah Shakespeare Festival when Stephen was just 22. The two bonded over their shared hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Years later, their final collaboration was when they created “THE HUMANS.” Stephen reflected that it was a way for them to “go home again.” “THE HUMANS” opened at the Roundabout the following fall then opened on Broadway later that winter where it had nearly a yearlong run before closing in January 2017. It had a limited West End engagement as well as a U.S.

    2013 Play Group Sofia Alvarez is a graduate of the Juilliard Schoolʼs Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program. She is a member of New Georgeʼs emerging artist group, The JAM and Primary Stagesʼ Dorothy Strelsin New American Writerʼs Group. Sofia is currently working on an original pilot for USA and a new play commission for South Coast Rep. BA, Bennington College. Sarah Burgessʼs plays include: Earthsiege: Commence (Steep Theatre workshop, Chicago; First Mondays, New York) and FAIL: Failures (ANT Fest). Sarah was a writer for The Tenant (Woodshed Collective) and currently writes for “Naked Radio” (Naked Angels). Screenwriting credits include Nate (Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmakerʼs Award) and These Things Happen (Malcolm Ross Award). NYU Film – 2007 Faculty Commendation for Body of Work. Sarah Gancherʼs work has been produced/developed at Londonʼs National Theatre Studio, Edinburghʼs Traverse Theatre, Budapestʼs Quarter6Quarter7 Festival, PS122, Ars Nova, NYC SummerStage, and the Great Plains Theater Conference, among others. She has worked as a collaborating playwright with devising ensembles including The TEAM, Hand2Mouth and Telluride Theatre. She is a 2012—2014 Time Warner Fellow at the Womenʼs Project Playwrights Lab. Nick Gandiello's NYC credits include Travis Winters (American Globe Theatre) and Screen (Samuel French OOB Festival). He was selected as a finalist for Page 73's 2013 Playwriting Fellowship. Nick is the Literary Manager of Young Playwrights, Inc. MFA Playwriting, The New School For Drama. Jake Jeppsonʼs plays include Fox Play, The Clearing and Turtle. Jake teaches playwriting at Wesleyan and created the apprentice program at the Orchard Project. He writes for the National Geographic Channel.
