In this case, monitoring water quality of water supply sources is a relevant and quite complicated task, especially when there are active karst processes and difficult groundwater conditions in the area of localities. Application of analytical algoristic-type water supply models under the risk of groundwater dynamics disturbance is not efficient. Influence of different factors on the sediment yield of the Oka basin rivers (central Russia) VALENTIN GOLOSOV Laboratory for Soil Erosion and Fluvial Processes, Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University, GSP-2, 119992, Moscow, Russia [email protected] Abstract In order to investigate links between basin/land-use characteristics and sediment fluxes of rivers within the Oka River basin, a database has been compiled from observations obtained at 25 gauging stations located in different parts of the basin. Relatively high correlations have been found between sediment yield from basin hillslopes and river sediment yield for: (i) rivers of the forest and northern part of forest-steppe zones (r2 = 0.50); and (ii) rivers of forest-steppe zones (r2 = 0.52). A linear positive relationship (r2 = 0.71) has been found between sediment delivery ratio and weighted average gradient of river channel separately for the large river basins and small river basins of the forest zone. A negative relationship between sediment delivery ratio and forested area within basins is found separately for the small (S < 2500 km2) rivers and large rivers of the Oka River basin. The influence of other factors as well as the problem of small river aggradation is also discussed. In the Law Code of 1649, Russia definitively bound peasants of all ranks to their official places of residence to facilitate tax collection and provide a workforce for the nobility serving in the army. In the ensuing century and a half, the government introduced new censuses, internal passports, and monetary fines; dispatched investigative commissions; and coerced provincial authorities and residents into surveilling and policing outsiders. Despite these legislative measures and enforcement mechanisms, many thousands of peasants left their localities in search of jobs, opportunities, and places to settle. While many fugitives toiled as barge haulers, factory workers, and agriculturalists, some turned to brigandage and river piracy. Others employed deception or forged passports to concoct fictitious identities, register themselves in villages and towns, and negotiate their status within the existing social structure.

Widely-spread small rivers are very poorly studied in relation to channel processes. The influence of local factors, high sensitivity to human impact, close connection with basin processes, and relatively low rates of channel changes distinguish them from medium and large ones and make it necessary to form a special approach to studies. Based on collection of long-term maps and local residents’ interviews, we reconstructed the transformation of channels in the Kudma River basin (the Volga Upland) for the last 200 years. Based on the bank erosion monitoring during 2011-2019 the modern rates of channel changes were revealed. We found that significant human impact is associated with the artificial channels cutoffs and draining of ponds which led to channel incision of the Kudma and Ozerka Rivers in the middle reaches and the transformation of floodplain into terrace. Agriculture development caused siltation of the upper reaches of rivers. The rivers of the forested part of the basin experienced the least human changes. From 2011 to 2019 the maximum rates of bank erosion were found to be within range of 0.3 to 2.7 m/year and supposed to be driven by peak water discharge.

And the disputes between the Russians and their neighbours and between the Bashkirs, the Kazakhs, the Turkomans, the Kyrgyz and the Kalmyks – not to mention the Djungars, the Dungans, the Nogai, the Mongols, the Uighurs and countless others – means that this is not a subject for the faint-hearted. Nonetheless, I hope that the writings referred to in this book have been put into the right historical context. The reasons why outsiders travelled to the Great Steppe varied over time and in themselves provide a different kind of history. Some of these travellers, particularly the women, have been forgotten by modern readers. Hopefully this book will stimulate you the reader to track down some of the long- forgotten classics mentioned within. Personally, I do not think the steppe culture described so vividly by travellers in these pages will ever fully disappear. The steppe is truly vast and can swallow whole cities with ease. Landscape has a close relationship with culture – and the former usually dominates the latter. Whatever happens, it will be many years before the Great Steppe finally gives up all its secrets. The study is based on remote sensing data and the Trends.Earth Land Degradation Monitoring Project (Land Cover Dataset, European Space Agency 2015, 300 m spatial resolution) implemented using the open-source Quantum GIS 2.18. Four landscape provinces and eight site were identified in the studied catchment area according to the geomorphological structure and the soil and vegetation cover. The ecosystem parameters Gross Primary Productivity, Net Primary Productivity, and Ecosystem Respiration were measured in the identified sites.

Read Full License Page 1/19 Abstract After the construction of the Volga Hydroelectric Station and other dams, migration routes of the Caspian lamprey were obstructed. The ecological niches vacated by this species attracted another lamprey of the genus Lampetra to the Upper Volga, which probably came from the Baltic Sea via the system of shipways developed in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Based on collected samples and observations from sites in the Upper Volga basin, we provide diagnostic characters of adults, and information on spawning behavior. Silver coloration of Lampetra uviatilis was noted for the rst time and a new size-related subsample of “large” specimens was delimited, in addition to the previously described “dwarf”, “small” and “common” adult resident sizes categories. The three water systems: the Vyshnii Volochek, the Tikhvin and the Mariinskaya, are possible invasion pathways, based on the migration capabilities of the lampreys. Dispersal and colonization of the Caspian basin was likely a combination of upstream and downstreams migrations.

Khariton, September 1993. “All of you can be sure your children and grandchildren will be proud and this is the beginning...,” Yuri Trutnev, September 1993. The words above by Yu. B. Khariton, founder of the Soviet nuclear weapons program and Chief Scientist of the All-Russian Scientific Research Center of Experimental Physics (VNIIEF) in Sarov, were spoken to a Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) team after the completion of the first joint fundamental scientific experiment conducted at VNIIEF with LANL. Trutnev, Deputy Chief Scientist of VNIIEF and a colleague of Nobel Peace Laureate Andre Sakharov, added his comments at a banquet celebrating the same experiment. Khariton was absolutely right: the budding LANL/VNIIEF collaboration was extraordinary and it was unprecedented in the nuclear age. Trutnev was absolutely right, too: it was just the beginning, and his words imply the hopes of all of those who have participated in the collaboration: that our children and grandchildren will live in a world free of the international tensions and fear of nuclear war that put a cloud over his and my generation. For the author and most, if not all, of the LANL members of the collaboration, the opportunity to participate in the collaboration was one of the highlights of their careers.
