Introducing the Old Testament. John Drane is Head of Practical Theology in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is also an adjunct professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, California, and a visiting professor at Morling College, Sydney.
If you only want one book to assist your study of the Old Testament, then this is the one! Well set out, with plenty of graphics and time-lines to please the eye and help you picture what it is you are reading about. Knowledgable and informative, the book successfully avoids the pitfalls of being too 'academic', but provides plenty of margin references for you to go direct to the biblical text being commented on. A first-rate study aid.
Introducing the New Testament. John Drane is Head of Practical Theology in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is also an adjunct professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, California, and a visiting professor at Morling College, Sydney.
This book by John Drane is a masterpiece. Drane approaches the subject from an evangelical christian point of view. He is not scared to examine points of view that he disagrees with, but at the same time he will let no current social convention come between himself and what he believes the text of the New Testament to actually mean. This book does not just cover the theology of the New Testament but also looks at the socio-political climate that the New Testament was written in and that the first christians lived in.
Towards the Source.
The book Towards the Source has been created with love by Friends in Wales. We hope it will be of use in a variety of ways. We hope to spread knowledge of the Quaker way to those who are unfamiliar with it; to give those beyond Wales a glimpse of Quakerism with some distinctive additional features; to show us something of ourselves as Friends; to provide material for reflection, worshipful sharing and spiritual nurture, if that is how Friends want to use it; to celebrate our being.

Being a Quaker - a guide for newcomers. Geoffrey Durham.
Geoffrey Durham's engaging introduction to the life and faith of Quakers today, with its well-judged balance of information, personal experience, spiritual guidance and practical advice, was warmly welcomed when it first appeared in 2011. It has now been revised and updated to incorporate new developments and fresh thinking.
A Light that is Shining - an Introduction to the Quakers. Harvey Gillman.
If you want to find out more about exactly what Quakers are and what they believe, this little book mostly does that and in a nice, conversational style. Very pragmatic in its approach. Terms are defined, a bit of history is covered, and current types of meetings are described in detail. What is missing is theology. The author states that there really isn't a core theology, but also makes numerous references to Quaker values and lifestyle and these are not clearly defined. Very helpful overall though. This book presents the Religious Society of Friends to the general public or inquirers in a readily understood way and suggests further avenues to explore if one is interested.

A Guide to True Peace - or The Excellency of Inward and Spiritual Prayer. Fenelon, Mme. Guyon and Molinos.
This is a practical book. It is for those who want a hands-on guide to inward prayer. It is not a theological work or abstract or argumentative.
This Quaker devotional will give the reader insight into the early Quaker thought emphasis. Mainly a compilation of the works of Guyon, Fenelon, Molinos, it can serve as help during times of prayer and meditation.
I carry it with me wherever I go. I have found that when I have a free moment I can refresh myself by reading a paragraph or two from this work. This always brings me back to that abiding inward presence.
