  • Growing up on the Ranch
GROWING UP ON THE RANCH In 1945 at the end of World War II dad was de-mobbed from the Royal Navy, he had been an aero-engine fitter on aircraft carriers. Shortly afterwards he got a job at Rolls-Royce in Barnoldswick and so, in April 1946, when I was six months old, we moved from Ashton-Under-Lyne, near Manchester, to live in Earby. We lived firstly at 22 Warwick Drive with my aunt and uncle, who like my dad had got a job at Rolls-Royce, then in a flat above a shop at 111a Colne Road, until the day came when we moved into a prefab at 16 Chesford Avenue on The Ranch. North Holme Estate(named after a nearby farmhouse), known colloquially as The Ranch, was situated at the top of a hill on Salterforth Lane, a short distance from the railway station. The estate comprised of semi-detached prefabricated (prefab) bungalows which were erected at the start of the war to house “essential workers”. The estate got its nickname from the community centre which looked like a ranch house. The community centre was a large prefabricated building, it had a bar, a small stage, snooker tables and one room at the end was a library, which on Saturdays was used as a cinema where films were shown. It was run for a long time by Phyllis and Bill Brookes whose son John tells me he used to help change the beer barrels and serve behind the bar at age twelve. PREFAB The prefabs were constructed from asbestos sheeting with a corrugated roof.

Travel, movement and operational restrictions have been implemented by many countries. We continue to be faced with an unprecedented set of circumstances caused by COVID-19 and an absence of relevant/sufficient market evidence on which to base our judgements. Our advice is provided subject to this material uncertainty and a higher degree of caution should be attached to our advice than would normally be the case. This explanatory note is included to ensure transparency and to provide further insight as to the market context under which our advice has been prepared. In recognition of the potential for market conditions to move rapidly in response to changes in the control or future spread of COVID-19 we highlight the importance of the date on which this advice is provided. 1.0 Introduction Introducing Nelson 1.1 The former mill town of Nelson has a population of over 30,0001 people, the largest in the Borough of Pendle (89,500 people), and serves as its principal retail, service and administrative centre.

At the 90 degree right hand turn, turn left into Gisburn track. You then have to do a U turn and proceed down Barnoldswick Road taking the first track on the left hand side. Proceed to the end and this is Greenshaw Farm. DESCRIPTION Set with one of the most idyllic views in Pendle overlooking Slipper Hill Reservoir and Lake Burwain and having views in the distance towards The Herders and Boulsworth Hill, this semi detached four bedroom farmhouse offers fantastic family living accommodation which briefly comprises substantial lounge with wood burning stove with snug area, farmhouse dining kitchen, separate dining room and garden room at ground floor level, all having outstanding South facing views to the front. • Memories of Colne
MEMORIES OF COLNE By Mrs. Cryer, of Burnley (Formerly Miss Margaret Jane Ward, of Colne) in Collaboration with Mr. Willie Bell, of Burnley (Formerly of Colne) Reprinted from the “Colne and Nelson Times” March to August 1910 (Scanned with optical character recognition and reformatted by Craig Thornber, January 1998) -1- Introduction In 1910, Mrs. Cryer produced a series of articles for the “Colne and Nelson Times”, recalling her memories of Colne in the 1850’s. She had a remarkable memory and recounted the names and details of most of the town’s shop-keepers and their families. The book is a treasure trove for all those with family history interests in Colne in the middle of last century. To my delight, at the end of Chapter IV, I found mention of Miss Margaret Cragg, the sister of my great great grandfather. The book based on Mrs. Cryer’s articles is now very rare, so the opportunity has been taken to reproduce it. This version has been produced from a photocopy of the book by computer scanning, using an optical character recognition programme. Computer scanning is never completely accurate, particularly with punctuation marks, and when working from a document with low contrast. While the final version has been subjected to proof reading and computer based spelling checks, a few errors may remain, for which I am responsible. Many of the sentences and paragraphs are very long and the division into chapters is somewhat arbitrary, but the book has been reproduced as written. The numbering of chapter XIII has been corrected and a few changes have been made to the format for reasons of clarity.

  • Earby Through 60 Years Kelbrook Band
Earby Through 60 Years An Outstanding Kelbrook Worthy Mr. Eli Cowgill’s School days (By John Hartley) 22/4/1938 In the last article a brief reference was made to my friend, Eli Cowgill, of Kelbrook. Two days after its publication be passed away suddenly, following a seizure, and being unconscious he was unable to read it. He had actually anticipated it, for a few days previously he remarked to his wife, "I think Johnnie will put something in' t' Craven Herald about him and me being at t' Sough together." For many years he had been one of the outstanding characters in his native village, especially of those who had been associated with the Smallpage era. He had a lively recollection of those days, and delighted to recount interesting incidents of his earlier years. He received his education spasmodically, part of it at a private elementary school at the old Baptist Chapel at Earby, the school being run by Joseph Heaton, whose father had been the Baptist minister for a few years. The "master" was rather slack in enforcing discipline, and also in his own personal habits. On a hot summer afternoon he would sometimes send one of the boys with a can to the White Lion Inn for a pint of beer to slake his thirst; and one pint was not always sufficient. When he was overcome with the indulgence he would send the scholars home for the rest of the day. "Joss" Heaton could not be said to have inspired much reverence by his personal influence upon his pupils.
