Jantzen 2017 Abstract This dissertation explores the implications of the doctrine of providence for Christian life in the context of racialized modernity, offering a constructive theological response to two interrelated questions. First, how should Christians relate the doctrine of divine providence to the task of political judgment? That is, how should doctrinal accounts of the nature and shape of God’s ongoing activity in history between creation and eschaton inform attempts to come to specific judgments about what God is doing in and through particular historical events? Second, how has whiteness insinuated itself into and distorted Christian attempts to discern the movement of God in history? In short, the dissertation engages divine providence not simply as a doctrine, but as a hermeneutic—a theological lens through which to actively interpret the world in relationship to God— and, more specifically, as a hermeneutic with a problematic history of identifying God’s providential action with the interests and activities of white Christian peoples. In dialogue with the writings of G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Barth, and James Cone, the dissertation examines the role played by the doctrine of providence in both theological justifications (Hegel) and critiques (Barth, Cone) of modern theories about European progress, the superiority of Western civilization, and white racial supremacy. I argue that Hegel articulates his problematic vision of providence through an operation of Christological displacement, wherein the figure of European man replaces Jesus Christ as the human subject in relationship to whom world history and global humanity find order, meaning, and purpose. I then turn to Barth and Cone, interpreting their writings on providence and divine action as critiques of the theological problem on display in Hegel. iv Through analysis of this conversation within modern Protestant theology about providence, politics, and race, I outline a set of conditions for contemporary theological reflection on these matters. These include commitments to the centrality of the incarnation of Jesus Christ for conceptualizing providence, to the creatureliness of human beings, and to the active work of the Holy Spirit. I also argue that contemporary engagements with the doctrine must address two problems which neither Hegel, Barth, nor Cone sufficiently resolve: the persistent masculinity of Christian accounts of providence and a competitive construal of the Spirit-Son relationship. The final chapter formulates a constructive hermeneutic of providence in light of these conditions. I develop an account of divine providence as the two-fold work of the Holy Spirit in (1) making Jesus Christ present to creation between ascension and eschaton and (2) enabling human creaturely participation in Christ’s providential presence. Building on themes in womanist theology and contemporary pneumatology, I suggest that the work of the Spirit manifests in three characteristic activities in particular: the Spirit gives life to ordinary, overlooked, and oppressed material bodies; the Spirit joins, drawing those who would normally be strangers and enemies into intimate relationships; the Spirit anticipates the end of time in the midst of the present. Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense.

Gelpi, Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley Respondent: Alexander Garcia-Rivera, Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley Addressing thirty participants, Donald Gelpi outlined the major elements of the argument constructed in his three-volume work, The Firstborn of Many: A Christology for Converting Christians (Marquette University Press, 2001). Gelpi's remarks and those of his respondent, Alexander Garcia-Rivera, sparked a vigorous exchange of questions and responses moderated by Lou McNeil. Gelpi opened by discussing the method he used for the formulation of his Christology, the philosophical presuppositions on which it rested, and the way in which a theology of conversion structured his theological argument. The method guiding The Firstborn of Many blends elements from Bernard Lonergan's Method in Theology and the work of Charles Sanders Peirce. Gelpi takes Lonergan's understanding of the task of theology as mediation between a religion and the culture in which that religion roots itself, his definition of method, and his theory of functional specialties. He explained why he believes that Peirce's logic and metaphysics offer a sounder grounding for Lonergan's theory of functional specialties than Lonergan's own transcendental method and modified Transcendental Thomism. The philosophical metaphysics structuring Gelpi's Christological argument is an application of Peircean logic to philosophical thinking. Gelpi interpreted metaphysical thinking as the elaboration of a fallible hypothesis about the nature of reality by giving inferential elaboration to a root metaphor for reality, which needs verification in human perceptual experience, in shared, lived, social experience, in the results of close scientific and scholarly investigations into reality, and in the events which reveal the Christian God.

    21st Conference of the International Lutheran Council Berlin, Germany August 27 – September 2, 2005 The Formula of Concord as a Model for Discourse in the Church Robert Kolb The appellation „Formula of Concord“ has designated the last of the symbolic or confessional writings of the Lutheran church almost from the time of its composition. This document was indeed a formulation aimed at bringing harmony to strife-ridden churches in the search for a proper expression of the faith that Luther had proclaimed and his colleagues and followers had confessed as a liberating message for both church and society fifty years earlier. This document is a formula, a written document that gives not even the slightest hint that it should be conveyed to human ears instead of human eyes. The Augsburg Confession had been written to be read: to the emperor, to the estates of the German nation, to the waiting crowds outside the hall of the diet in Augsburg. The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, it is quite clear from recent research,1 followed the oral form of judicial argument as Melanchthon presented his case for the Lutheran confession to a mythically yet neutral emperor; the Apology was created at the yet not carefully defined border between oral and written cultures. The Large Catechism reads like the sermons from which it was composed, and the Small Catechism reminds every reader that it was written to be recited and repeated aloud. The Formula of Concord as a „Binding Summary“ of Christian Teaching In contrast, the „Formula of Concord“ is written for readers, a carefully- crafted formulation for the theologians and educated lay people of German Lutheran churches to ponder and study.

The Gospel of John says that the Word became “flesh” not that the Word became “human.” By using flesh, John’s Gospel connects the Incarnation to the Jewish notion of all animals. The Gospel almost always uses flesh in a wider sense than meaning human. The Bread of Life discourse makes this explicit when Jesus compares his flesh to “meat,” offending his hearers because they see themselves as above other animals. Other animals are killable and consumable; humans are not. The notion that the Word became flesh has gained prominence in ecotheology, particularly in theologians identifying with deep Incarnation. Unless this notion is connected to Jesus’s particularity, however, there is danger in sacrificing the individual for the whole.

    "NOT A SPARROW FALLS": ON PROVIDENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY IN HISTORY To ask about the meaning of providence and historical responsibility in Chris- tian understanding today is to enter a domain of mystery. On the one side, the ex- perience of evil in the twentieth century is so profound that the simple saying of Jesus about God's intimate care for humans, "not a sparrow falls," seems almost naive. On the other side, the dominance of science and technology suggests a hu- man community and a world quite on its own without need or opening for the care of God who, the saying implies, is involved in the world's smallest happening as in history's ultimate direction and goal. There is a paradox in this sense of evil and of autonomy that is our burden today in questions of God's providence and our responsibility. For never have we been more conscious of the immense capacity that is ours. We have astonishing scientific and technological ability, to travel in space, to heal illness and prolong life, to feed the world, to create social, political and religious institutions, to reor- der society according to inclusive and humane patterns. But we have also the abil- ity to destroy, in our consuming greed, human lives and the human environment, to end the whole historical project. Hence our feeling of powerlessness, of en- trapment in what we have made, the feeling that our agency is beyond our control, a new kind of fate. How might the mystery of providence be understood today? Would something be missing in Christian experience without this symbol of God's hidden guidance, God's secret design for us and our world that constitutes a claim on our practice and on all we create?1 A liberation theologian reports that providence is an abused concept in which God's will has been invoked to "justify colonial conquest, racism, the gross ex- ploitation of the poor by the rich, and shameless abuses of political and even ec- clesiastical power.

A Biblical Theology of Providence Compared with ‘Chance’ and ‘Good Luck’ in Greco-Roman and African Traditions Matthew Michael1 ABSTRACT The paper presents a biblical theology of providence by exploring the theological tensions between divine determinism and the beliefs in ‘chance’ and ‘good luck’ in Greco-Roman and traditional African worldviews.2 It also situates the discourse in the template of biblical theology and other defining theological works. Finally, the paper explores the distinctive character of providence in biblical thought and its possible use to affirm the sovereignty, care and love of God in the face of despair, misery and lostness that have characterized modern African societies. 1. Introduction Every human society has assumptions concerning the powers at work in existence that are presumed to determine and ultimately shape everything to some desired ends. The popular Greek belief was that fate is such a power at work in the world. Fate determines the course of history and of human conduct.3 For the ancient Greeks, fate was the inescapable companion of every person with the power to control everyone.
