L’HISTOIRE DE L’EAU ET DES INSTALLATIONS HYDRAULIQUES DANS LE BASSIN DE KAIROUAN. (pages 59-64) TEXTE DE FAOUZI MAHFOUDH SAMIR BACCOUCH BECHIR YAZIDI TUNIS NOVEMBRE 2004 (Retrieved on October 23, 2008, from http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/assessment/FILES/word/ProjectDocuments/Merguellil/Histoire%20eau%20Kairouan.pdf ) 6- PROPAGATION OF THE KAIROUAN MODEL We saw through the preceding developments that a particular kind of circular cistern was developed in Kairouan and its zone of influence as far as the northern borders and more precisely those with the Proconsulaire . This type had been identified as Aghlabide. Regarding them, Solignac has written: “On this subject, one can pose the question of the origin of this type, of which the basins of Dahmani seem to have been among the first applications. Research in Persian, Arabic, Syrian, Egyptian and Byzantine literature and iconography, has been made and did not provide any frame of comparison. It thus indicates, probably, a new and original process … a conclusion therefore is essential, that it is indeed a Moslem technique and that it is specifically African” 77 . It is now well established that the circular basins are not specifically African. The work of Saad Al-Rashid on the pilgrimage route between Kûfa and Mecca, named Darb Zubaydah, revealed several tanks similar to those which had been believed to be typically African 78 . Among the best known examples, one quotes those of Birkat Ath Thulaymah (site n°6), Birkat Al Rashidiya (site n° 10), Birkatt Tuzzi and Birkat Uraynah (site n° 25 et° 26), Dlay' ash Shaqaq (site n°31) and Birkat Al - Kharabah (site n° 38).

  • Paraguay: in Brief
Paraguay: In Brief June S. Beittel Analyst in Latin American Affairs August 31, 2017 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R44936 Paraguay: In Brief Summary Paraguay is a South American country wedged between Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil. It is about the size of California but has a population of less than 7 million. The country is known for its rather homogenous culture—a mix of Latin and Guarani influences, with 90% of the population speaking Guarani, a pre-Columbian language, in addition to Spanish. The Paraguayan economy is one of the most agriculturally dependent in the hemisphere and is largely shaped by the country’s production of cattle, soybeans, and other crops. In 2016, Paraguay grew by 4.1%; it is projected to sustain about 4.3% growth in 2017. Since his election in 2013, President Horacio Cartes of the long-dominant Colorado Party (also known as the Asociación Nacional Republicana [ANC]), has moved the country toward a more open economy, deepening private investment and increasing public-private partnerships to promote growth. Despite steady growth, Paraguay has a high degree of inequality and, although poverty levels have declined, rural poverty is severe and widespread. Following Paraguay’s 35-year military dictatorship in the 20th century (1954-1989), many citizens remain cautious about the nation’s democracy and fearful of a return of patronage and corruption. In March 2016, a legislative initiative to allow a referendum to reelect President Cartes (reelection is forbidden by the 1992 constitution) sparked large protests. Paraguayans rioted, and the parliament building in the capital city of Asunción was partially burned.

HUMAN RIGHTS UNAMI Office of the United Nations United Nations Assistance Mission High Commissioner for for Iraq – Human Rights Office Human Rights Report on the Protection of Civilians in the Armed Conflict in Iraq: 11 December 2014 – 30 April 2015 “The United Nations has serious concerns about the thousands of civilians, including women and children, who remain captive by ISIL or remain in areas under the control of ISIL or where armed conflict is taking place. I am particularly concerned about the toll that acts of terrorism continue to take on ordinary Iraqi people. Iraq, and the international community must do more to ensure that the victims of these violations are given appropriate care and protection - and that any individual who has perpetrated crimes or violations is held accountable according to law.” − Mr. Ján Kubiš Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq, 12 June 2015, Baghdad “Civilians continue to be the primary victims of the ongoing armed conflict in Iraq - and are being subjected to human rights violations and abuses on a daily basis, particularly at the hands of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Ensuring accountability for these crimes and violations will be paramount if the Government is to ensure justice for the victims and is to restore trust between communities. It is also important to send a clear message that crimes such as these will not go unpunished’’ - Mr. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 12 June 2015, Geneva Contents Summary ...................................................................................................................................... i Introduction ................................................................................................................................ 1 Methodology ..............................................................................................................................
