The event honors the women who marched and fought for voting rights; their hard work culminating in 1920 when the nineteenth amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote. The 2013 Commem- orative March begins at the Overlea Fullerton Community Center on Belair Road, it spans three blocks and ends at the Natural History Society of Maryland. The venue is the site of Overlea’s original town hall and where the 1913 suffrag- ettes spoke to the community. Yellow National and local women’s organizations, along with community ad- Commemorative vocates, leaders and elected officials join the march. Numerous parcels of high-lying farmland were eventually subdivided into homesites. The Belair Road carline, which originally ended at Kenwood Avenue, made this area very attractive to potential buyers that wanted a country setting with access to city amenities. This remains true today. The majority of streets are named after trees. The Victorian homes on tree- lined streets highlight Overlea’s historic charm. Over the years, Overlea has continued to thrive and grow — the community consists of over 1,200 residences. The minute you turn east or west off of Belair Road, you leave the rushing traffic behind. The quaint, tree-lined streets with their well-kept lawns offer a nostalgic look into the past. This historic neighborhood still maintains its charm from the 1920’s and 1930’s. Beautifully restored victorians, and housing stock from several decades of the early 20th century, line the streets. Our community boasts multi-generational families who settled long ago and have chosen to stay. We invite you to visit our website at www.OverleaRocks.org. Connect with us. Connect with nature. “The Natural History Society of Maryland is preserving Maryland’s natural treasures and training naturalists of all ages: young children to older adults. We are a resource for naturalists of all skill levels; a group of like-minded people working to share knowledge and expand our understanding of the natural world. Our museum building in Overlea houses significant natural science collections of the State and a collections-based learning center—The Maryland Naturalist Center. Our programs take place throughout the State in local parks and neighborhoods, and at the Center—in the building referred to as ‘Town Hall’ by the suffragette marchers, and the site of a public reception held in their honor on February 23, 1913. The Society is continuing the long legacy of this building as a public, social place through its programming.
