New Walkway Stewards Optimistic for the Future

Steven Tinkelman, AIA, studied architecture at Cooper Union in City, but couldn’t stay away from the Hudson Valley for long. He came back to Poughkeepsie where his father and grandfather made their careers, and got right to work preserving and revitalizing properties in downtown Poughkeepsie’s historic districts. When the Dyson Foundation expanded their focus beyond to the Poughkeepsie waterfront, they turned to Steve Tinkelman and Tinkelman Architecture to design the new Upper Landing Park and the exterior facades of the two historic structures on the property. “Being selected for this project was such an honor,” said Steve, whose team includes wife Rachel and 11 other professionals. “The park, the elevator and the Former Walkway board member Steven Tinkelman and his wife Rachel Tinkelman were stabilized Hoffman and Reynolds houses are all part of honored recently for their generosity as Walkway Stewards. a master plan that reflects the potential of connecting L-R: Lucy R. Dear Friends,

Finally, spring is in the air! And with spring, lots of new and exciting growth. And just like spring, before new growth, there’s mud season, and this year there will be plenty of mud as we partner with NYS Parks to break ground on a new Ulster Welcome Center at our Highland gate. You will love the new amenities planned for this center – including RESTROOMS and a covered picnic area! The Highland entrance will remain open during construction, however travel lanes will be compressed as work areas are fenced in. We really appreciate your patience and understanding. If all goes well, we hope to begin this fall on the Dutchess Welcome Center at the Poughkeepsie gate. Are you training yet to run or walk during the 2017 Walkway Marathon Weekend? We’re gearing up now for this great event on June 10-11, 2017. Register now for the Think Differently Dash on Saturday and the Walkway Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K runs on Sunday. Check out this year’s new routes and register online at walkwaymarathon.org. We publish a map twice each year to guide tourists and locals alike to experience nearby area attractions in Highland and Poughkeepsie. Look for our new Spring 2017 Walkway Vicinity Map with new Walkway Loop Trail options and more detail on nine Discovery Zones to explore on foot or bike in the Greater Walkway Experience.
