King. The group’s ongoing musical story has covered the entire spectrum of Rock & Roll. They were the first musical group to include string instruments into Rhythm & Blues music with their hauntingly beautiful song, “There Goes My Baby.” They were the first musical group to sell two million records with their pop classic, “Up on the Roof.” They were the first African American vocal group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along with fellow inductees the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Supremes, The Drifters were in the first class of OCTOBER with Jarabe Mexicano Rock & Roll legends to be initiated into the Hall of Fame. Starting with Michener's early life experiences in Doylestown (Pennsylvania), the conversation includes his family's poverty, his wanderings across the United States, and his reading at the local public library. The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. Lists five selected works about James Michener and provides a year-by-year Internet search on the author.(BT) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.

Asked about his preoccupation with the supernat- ural, McPherson intimated, “I remember when I was a little kid, I was always interested in ghosts and scary things. If I want to rationalize it, it’s probably a search for God.” This quest led him to theater. “There’s something so religious about the theatre,” he stated. We’re all sitting there in the dark, and there’s some- thing about how the stage glows in the darkness, which is such a beautiful pic- ture of human existence. What’s really interesting is the darkness that surrounds the picture.

Volume 19, Number 4, December 2013 Copyright © 2013 Society for Music Theory A Foreign Sound to Your Ear: Bob Dylan Performs “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009 * Steven Rings NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.rings.php KEYWORDS: Bob Dylan, performance, analysis, genre, improvisation, voice, schema, code ABSTRACT: This article presents a “longitudinal” study of Bob Dylan’s performances of the song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” over a 45-year period, from 1964 until 2009. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.

  • Packaged Wright
PACKAGED WRIGHT Michelle Wright's image consultants helped her get Nashville's attention. Now if they could only find her a hit... By David Hayes, Saturday Night, June 1995 Gently downshifting her brand-new black Mercedes E420 sedan, Michelle Wright eases off I-65 South at the Franklin exit and drives past fast-food outlets and rolling fields while a country station plays on the radio. When you've made it in country music, you live in Franklin, a tidy suburb forty minutes from Nashville's Music Row where stars such as Dolly Parton and Wynonna Judd own mansions and estates. It's also where Wright, Canada's top female country singer, recently bought a five-bedroom home, although hers is one of many lookalikes in a newly built, middle-class subdivision. Still, both the car -- which recently replaced her clunky old Ford Escort -- and the house are material symbols of Wright's progress in the country-music major leagues, a far cry from the life of a struggling newcomer. At her house, Wright disappears into her bedroom while her longtime manager, Brian Ferriman, and her image consultant, Joan Lacey, make themselves comfortable in the bright, high-ceilinged living room. The plan is to model several possible outfits for the upcoming Juno Awards, where Wright is both a presenter and a nominee. Considering how often she has been away on tour since the fall, it's not surprising Wright's house feels barely lived in, as though the interior designer arranged the furniture and hung the prints yesterday. A homey touch is provided by Wright's four cats, who pad matter-of-factly across the white broadloom.

  • An Intergenerational Narrative Analysis of Black Mothers and Daughters
Still Waiting to Exhale: An Intergenerational Narrative Analysis of Black Mothers and Daughters DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jamila D. Smith, B.A., MFA College of Education and Human Ecology The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Professor Elaine Richardson, Advisor Professor Adrienne D. Dixson Professor Carmen Kynard Professor Wendy Smooth Professor Cynthia Tyson Copyright by Jamila D. Smith 2012 Abstract This dissertation consists of a nine month, three-state ethnographic study on the intersectional effects of race, age, gender, and place in the lives of fourteen Black mothers and daughters, ages 15-65, who attempt to analyze and critique the multiple and competing notions of Black womanhood as “at risk” and “in crisis.” Epistemologically, the research is grounded in Black women’s narrative and literacy practices, and fills a gap in the existing literature on Black girlhood and Black women’s lived experiences through attention to the development of mother/daughter relationships, generational narratives, societal discourse, and othermothering. I argue that an in-depth analysis and critique of the dominant “at risk” and “in crisis” discourse is necessary to understand the conversations that are and are not taking place between Black mothers and daughters about race, gender, age, and place; that it is important to understand the ways in which Black girls respond to media portrayals and stereotypes; and that it is imperative that we closely examine the existing narratives at play in the everyday lives of intergenerational Black girls and women in Black communities.
