In 1535, just before the dissolution of the monasteries, the commandery at Slebech was the third richest monastic house in Wales, after the Cistercian abbeys at Tintern and Valle Crucis. 												  What Information Do We Hold?ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL ARCHIVES & CHAPTER LIBRARY Research guides No.1 The Order of the Garter Foundation and composition The Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest surviving Order of Chivalry in the world, was founded by Edward III in or just before 1348. St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, became and remains the spiritual home of the Order and holds the annual Service of Thanksgiving on Garter Day which is attended by the Sovereign and Companions of the Order. The origins of the Order’s blue garter and motto, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ (Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It), are uncertain. The date of the foundation of the Order of the Garter is a subject of historiographical controversy, largely due to the absence of early records of the Order. The French chronicler Froissart, writing between 1370 and 1400 and drawing upon the account of the English ecclesiastic Adam of Murimuth, claimed that the foundation of the Order coincided with the feast held by Edward III at Windsor Castle in January or February of 1344. At this feast, according to Murimuth, Edward had declared an intention to establish a Round Table of three hundred knights ‘in the same manner and estate as the Lord Arthur, formerly King of England’. It is now widely believed that Froissart wrongly conflated the events of the feast held in 1344 with the actual foundation of the Order of the Garter, which occurred later in the 1340s and possibly coincided with the establishment of the College of St George, Windsor, in 1348.

With background knowledge of the Order of Malta, you will be in a better position to satisfactorily complete your year- long journey of preparation to become a member of the Order. Hopefully, many of your questions about the Order will be answered in the coming pages. The Order of Malta is a lay religious Order of the Catholic Church with 14,000 members and 80,000 volunteers across the world headed by a Grand Master who governs the Order from Rome, both as a sovereign and as a religious leader. The Order was founded over 900 years ago by Blessed Gerard, a monk and Knight, who gathered a group of men and women together to commit themselves to the assistance of the poor and the sick, and to defend and to give witness to the Catholic faith.

HONOUR AND SOCIAL STATUS 6 I first used this term, borrowed from Henry Maine and also that of sex-linked characteristics, borrowed from genetics, in my Frazer Lecture delivered in Glasgow in Chapter One The theme of honour invites the moralist more often than the social scientist. An honour, a man of honour or the epithet honourable can be applied appropriately in any society, since they are evaluatory terms, but this fact has tended to conceal from the moralists that not only what is honourable but what honour is have varied within Europe from one period to another, from one region to another and above all from one class to another. The notion of honour is something more than a means of expressing approval or disapproval. It a general structure which is seen in the institutions and customary evalua- tions which are particular to a given culture. We might liken it to the concept of magic in the sense that, while its principles can be detected anywhere, they are clothed in conceptions which are not exactly equivalent from one place to another.

												  RUSSIAN TRADITION of the KNIGHTS of MALTA OSJ TheRUSSIAN TRADITION OF THE KNIGHTS OF MALTA OSJ The Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller is a collection of charitable organisations claiming continuity with the Russian Orthodox grand priory of the Order of Saint John. Their distinction emerged when the Mediterranean stronghold of Malta was captured by Napoleon in 1798 when he made his expedition to Egypt. As a ruse, Napoleon asked for safe harbor to resupply his ships, and then turned against his hosts once safely inside Valletta. Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch failed to anticipate or prepare for this threat, provided no effective leadership, and readily capitulated to Napoleon. This was a terrible affront to most of the Knights desiring to defend their stronghold and sovereignty. The Order continued to exist in a diminished form and negotiated with European governments for a return to power. The Emperor of Russia gave the largest number of Knights shelter in St Petersburg and this gave rise to the Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller and recognition within the Russian Imperial Orders. In gratitude the Knights declared Ferdinand von Hompesch deposed and Emperor Paul I was elected as the new Grand Master. Origin Blessed Gerard created the Order of St John of Jerusalem as a distinctive Order from the previous Benedictine establishment of Hospitallers (Госпитальеры). It provided medical care and protection for pilgrims visiting Jerusalem. After the success of the First Crusade, it became an independent monastic order, and then as circumstances demanded grafted on a military identity, to become an Order of knighthood. The Grand Priory of the Order moved to Rhodes in 1312, where it ruled as a sovereign power, then to Malta in 1530 as a sovereign/vassal power.

MORAL AMBIGUITY IN WHITE COLLAR CRIMINAL LAW STUART P. GREEN* Criminal sanctions, the most serious kind of sanctions we have in a civil society, have traditionally been reserved for con- duct that not only causes or risks serious harms but is also unam- biguously wrongful.' In some unusual cases involving necessity or other justification defenses, a defendant might argue that kill- ing another human being or causing some other serious harm was the right thing to do. But in the typical case of core criminal offenses such as murder, rape, and robbery, there is an underly- ing assumption that what the defendant did-if in fact she did do it-was, from a moral perspective, a very bad thing. There is, however, an important collection of criminal offenses that reflects a different pattern.

THE COAT OF ARMS SOME EXTERNAL INSIGNIA OF OFFICE FOR DIGNITARIES OF THE ORDER OF ST JOHN OF JERUSALEM, CYPRUS, RHODES AND MALTA John Joseph Fitzpatrick Kennedy Among the surprises awaiting the student of Hospitaller heraldry is the discovery that certain dignitaries of the order were entitled to use maces and standards, that is to say, external insignia of their offices in their heraldic achievements. Three customs relating to the heraldic display of the officers of the order are well-known, if insufficiently studied. They may be delineated as (a) the ‘Grand Master’s Custom’, by which the Grand Master could quarter the arms of the Religion in the first and fourth quarters with his family arms in the second and third;1 (b) the ‘Chief of Religion’, the custom which arose in 1470, by which a chief of the arms of the Religion could be added to the arms of Capitular Baillis and Grand Crosses of the order;2 and (c) the ‘Grand Cross custom’, by which knights placing their arms over an eight pointed cross of Malta when they became Grand Crosses of the order.3 It is not however the intention of this study to examine these three customs.
