My project explores Campbell’s definition of kwaskastahsowin in relation to two key twentieth-century works of Indigenous women’s writing in Canada: E. Pauline Johnson’s Legends of Vancouver (1911) and Maria Campbell’s Halfbreed (1973). Using a decolonial case-study approach that combines archival/digital methods with Indigenous editorial principles and protocols, my project focuses on the literary and storytelling contributions of three Indigenous women authors – E. Pauline Johnson (Mohawk), Mary Agnes Capilano (Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh), and Maria Campbell (Métis) – and situates their authorial contributions and publishing experiences within the larger context of twentieth- century Canadian publishing. My project uses archival research to interrogate the publishing contexts and histories of these texts, and reveals the extent to which colonial issues of voice and editorial intervention have shaped the published works. Furthermore, by approaching the various editions of these two texts with a focus on their shifting “paratexts” (Genette) or critical frameworks over time, I draw attention to the lasting impacts of such editorial interventions (as evidenced by the two excised and recently- recovered pages from Campbell’s Halfbreed, detailing her sexual assault by members of the RCMP, and through evidence of Johnson’s preferred title for the Legends of Vancouver collection). My examination of the publishing histories of these two key Indigenous texts reveals the urgency with which other works of twentieth-century Indigenous literature must be re-examined, and simultaneously calls for a necessary reenvisioning of the Indigenous literary paratext – one that takes into account Indigenous editorial principles and protocols. Sing n his overview of the historic origins in modern thought of ideas playing a central role in the current debate over matters of iden- tity and recognition, Charles Taylor emphasizes that, whether it is a Iquestion of individual or of collective identity, “we become full human agents, capable of understanding ourselves, and hence of defining our identity, through our acquisition of rich human languages of expression” (32). Languages, in this context, signify modes of expression used to iden- tify ourselves, including those of art and literature, and all evolve, are de- veloped, and are acquired in a dialogical manner — that is to say, through exchanges with others. By underscoring the socially derived character of identity, this perspective explains the importance of external recognition, both on an individual basis and on a cultural one. In this article, I intend to focus on an aesthetic that, grounded in memory, demonstrates and requests recognition for a particular type of “love of words.” The words in question belong to Michif, an oral ancestral language that, despite (or perhaps because of) its endangered status, proves to be a powerful identity symbol. Relegated to an underground existence during the latter part of the nineteenth century, the resurgence of Michif words and expressions in literary texts reminds the community to which they belong, and that they are telling (back) into existence, of its historic, cultural, and linguistic sources, thus re-laying claim to a specific and distinct, but unrecognized space on the Canadian word/landscape.

    The Langara College Archaeology Field School 2013: Archaeological and Forensic Studies Stanley A. Copp (Ph.D) Department of Sociology and Anthropology Langara College 100 West 49th Ave. Vancouver, B.C. Canada V5Y 2Z6 18 September 2013 Introduction Following on the success of the 2012 archaeology field school, students once again excavated artifacts, features, and replica human skeletal remains at the on-campus ‘site’ constructed in 2012 (see Copp 2012 for details), but doubled in size for 2013. Three 12’-square boxes containing seven sets of replica human skeletal remains configured as forensic archaeological features were excavated according to standard methodologies and protocols. An additional box contained artifacts and features, including a ½-scale replica human skeleton. Students definitely enjoyed ‘discovering’ the CSI-like aspects of the excavations, but seemed to enjoy even more the task of re-burying the remains in different configurations for next Summer (or for some lucky Forensic Anthropology students who would like near-real life excavation experiences). As in 2012, the 2013 field school students were tested to BC government RISC Archaeology and CMT survey certification standards. All were successful (again). Thanks are due the Archaeology Branch for allowing the RISC course to be embedded in Langara archaeology field schools. The RISC examination was the only written exam requirement for the program. Instead of regular exams or quizzes, evaluation consisted of 12 practical research assignments requiring research and analysis, laboratory exercises, field exercises recorded in a field notebook, daily journal entries and a major research paper. Keeping field records in a notebook and journal are mandatory requirements in the heritage consulting industry, as is developing a familiarity and skills in filling out site inventory and data forms.
