INTRODUCTION The Black Sea Region extends from the eastern edge of Sakarya plain in the West, to Georgia in the East. It is divided in three subregions: the West, Centre and East (Fig. 1). The Western Black Sea Region studied extends from the East of Sakarya plain and Bilecik province to the West of the Ktzihrmak delta. It in- cludes the northernparts of Ankara and Cankm provinces, and the eastern parts of Sakarya and Bilecik provinces (Fig.l). The list of the taxa is presented together with their habitats and localities. Th e Upper Cretaceous sequence in the region starts with a major marine transgression and lies unconformably on a basement of Palaeozoic and Triassic rocks in the north (İstanbul-type basement) and on metamorphic rocks and Jurassic sedimentary rocks in the south (Sakarya-type basement). Four megasequences have been diff erentiated in the Late Cretaceous–Eocene interval. Th e fi rst one, of Turonian to Late Campanian age, is represented by volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks in the north along the Black Sea coast, and by siliciclastic turbidites and intercalated calcarenites in the south, corresponding to magmatic arc basin and fore-arc basin, respectively. -

Under average meteorological conditions, the island is water-sufficient (969 mm precipitation; theoretical water potential 3284 hm3; and total water use 610 hm3). Agriculture is by far the greatest user of water (78% of total water use), followed by domestic use (21%). Despite the high average water availability, water scarcity events commonly occur, particularly in the eastern-south part of the island, driven by local climatic conditions and seasonal or geographical mismatches between water availability and demand. -

Geosynclinal sediments within the area were redated. Results of field study indicate a massive plate of metamorphic rocks and crystal I ine limestones was thrust southward over geosynclinal sediments. These in turn were thrust over the southern marginal basin deposits. -
