Service dogs are used to help keep their Warriors calm as paranoia is a common result from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). JUNE 2014 - www.bowlingworld.com 11 ASK BOB By Bob Korth 6/01/2014

Q. League is just ending and my average this year has been very disappoint- ing. I have averaged over 200 for many years but this year was 193. It was not lane conditions they seem about the same. I did during the season turned 61. My question is do you think age is a factor? I feel like I have lost some strength and my ball speed seems slower.

A. Aging could definitely be a factor. I am 72 and my speed has become slower but there are things that can be done to compensate. As we age we lose flexibility and strength in the legs. In bowling both of those are major problems. Leg strength is important to keep ball speed up. Flexibility is needed to stay lower at the point of release. As we age we tend to stand up higher at release. So do more walking to keep up leg strength and get some stretching exercises to try to keep loose. Be sure and check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program to make sure you have no underlying problems that could cause you harm. Even with exercise you may not get back the speed you used to have. So you may have to choose some less aggressive balls to help keep over reaction to a minimum. You my also have to polish more of your balls for the same rea- son. Go to your local pro shop and ask them for suggestions on drilling pat- terns and tweaks to the cover that may be needed.

Q. I have been bowling for about 5 years my average is 182 not bad but I seem to be stuck here. This was my 2nd year at this average with no sign of improvement. What can I do to get to the next level?

A. This is when most bowlers get stuck and the biggest reason is SPARES. To go from 180 to 200 average you need to pick up two extra spares a game. Next time you bowl keep your score on a piece of paper. Get detailed, what you left how many pins you knocked down if you spared you will very quickly 2015 USBC QUEENS SHIFTS TO MAY WITH see a pattern develop.
