It seemed somewhat fitting that the Steel City was the site of this gathering because both Pittsburgh and local access have faced significant FCTV challenges and metamorphic changes in the early stages of this 21st century. The massive decline in the domestic steel industry caused half the city’s population to Kid’s Club disappear and left thousands jobless along the way, but the city has worked to is back navigate its way to a high-tech commercial base. Though, as someone that grew up with family in Pittsburgh, it amazed me at times to see how many positive changes the this Fall! city has undergone. The ugly steel mills that surrounded the city with foul-smelling Watch for sulphur and soot are now gone and a new urban charm has taken over, replete with theatres, museums, galleries, and of course, three much, much cleaner rivers. September dates on FCTV. After a rousing opening ceremony and award presentation, it was off to the Continued on page 2 Page 2 FCTV PRESENTS

Forging allies Continued from page 1 workshops, which were organized in six tracks, entitled “Citizen Journalism and Social Media,” “CMC Management, Human Resource, and Board Development,” “Fundraising and Collaborations,” “Engineering, Broadband, Network Management and Related Issues,” “Media and Telecom Policy,” and “Community Engagement, Training, and Marketing/Outreach.”

In the first session, I was treated to three remarkable presentations by media centers from Arlington, VA; Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; and Brooklyn, NY entitled “Open The Doors of Your Center And Go Beyond TV.” As FCTV embraces more and more of the digital world to help our members get their voices heard, it was a good opportunity to contrast and compare how these large centers are FCTV Executive Director and ACM Chair Debra using “new media” and pick up Rogers speaks at the Pittsburg ACM Conference. some valuable insights.

In the next session I attended, Friday morning, entitled “Branding Your Access Channel and CMC,” we were offered some examples of how Cambridge Community Television and Denver Open Media have worked to strengthen their “brand,” and as a consequence, their community’s understanding of who they are and what they do. After lunch, I attended a demonstration called “Community Media Online: How To Aggregate Videos from Producers and Staff on Your Web Site.” This was a particularly valuable session, introducing new tools like the Miro Community which aggregates video from sources like YouTube, flickr, Blip.tv, and Vimeo. L-R: FCTV Board Member and Treasurer Kevin Lynch, FCTV Executive Director Debra Rogers, FCTV Production Coordinator Saturday morning, the new buzzwords of 2010 kept flowing, as Alecia Jean Orsini Lebeda, FCTV Director of Operations Tony Sadera I learned some new tricks and best practices in a session called at the Hometown Video Festival at the Pittsburg ACM Conference. “Using Social Media to Serve the PEG Community and Non-Profit Organizations.” I always like to get some engineering advice at every conference and I got some great ideas at the next session, entitled “Live Shoot! Strategies for Signal Delivery for Live Event Coverage.”

In between sessions came the vital “hallway networking” as I like to call it, in which many of the ideas presented in the workshops begin to synthesize into more new ideas during conversations with peers. I was also able to pick the brain of some representatives from Broadcast Pix, the manufacturers of our new switcher.

Though it was a busy agenda, I did find a bit of time to reacquaint myself with the city of my grandparents. And much like the Steel City, the Alliance, and the media it represents, has also struggled to find its way through difficult political and economic climates, with many centers falling by the wayside, but hopefully many more successes to come. As we listened to speeches and stories from fellow access professionals about their tribulations, it occurred to me how fortunate we are in Falmouth to have such a vibrant and vital access center, kept alive only by the quality of the volunteers, members, producers, and supporters that have been part of the FCTV community through the past generation.
