Back to School

SFA had an amazing first week of school. Hats off to all our teachers and staff for making a wonderful, safe and healthy environment for learning in the age of COVID-19. Continue to pray for our community, that God will bless our school year. Don’t forget that our Sunday morning Parish School of Religion program starts next week on September 13. We have an amazing group of catechists ready to share the faith and help our students grow in a relationship with Jesus. Remember this is also new for SFA this year, so patience and understanding will be in order. The kids will go to class from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. and then attend the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Thanks to our Director of Evangelization, Tammy Chumley for her countless efforts to make this a reality. And a special thanks to Beth Bartolotta, who will also be taking on the role of the Coordinator of our PSR. I know the Lord will bless these efforts and help our program flourish.

Happy Labor Day

Monday, September 7th is Labor Day! Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic accomplishments of American workers. It constitutes an annual national acknowledgement to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Even though it is not a religious celebration, Catholics happily celebrate it because it recognizes the value of an activity essential for human beings: work.

The relationship between faith and work is not new in the Christian tradition. In the Gospel, Jesus includes workers, field laborers and shepherds in his parables to teach us about God and his Kingdom. And, the Church has intimately linked these two activities: prayer and work. For this reason, Labor Day must be also a Day of Prayer for us Catholics. Both are intimately related; prayer is a kind of “work” — in the sense that it is an activity in itself — and that work must become a prayer, if lifted and offered up to God.

On Labor Day, we have the opportunity of recognizing the efforts of workers, but let us also remember those who are unemployed or underemployed as well, and keep them in our prayers. This Labor Day, we pray for the men and women whose jobs have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. We pray for their continued perseverance and determination as they continue to seek ways in which to participate in God’s creative work.

Friday, September 11th is Patriot Day! We remember all those who lost their lives in the 2001 attacks. We pray for all victims of violence and terrorism around the world, and for their families, that they may find comfort and peace.
