1. WITH YOU AND FOR YOU ALONE “I just thread the needle; it is God who does the work.” – Mary of Jesus Crucified. With the theme “Tuje Sangim, Tuje Khatir” (With You, for You), eight young brothers stepped forward to pledge their allegiance to Jesus Christ for life. By vowing Chastity, Poverty and Obedience, they displayed heroic courage and dedicated themselves for the service of the Church. These soldiers in the Carmelite battalion are Ronald Pudthado, Aaron Babusha Rodrigues, Jason Cutinho, Naveen Lobo, Rakeshbhai Parmar, Melwin Lasrado, Nikesh D’Souza and Kiran Lobo. Come what may, despite the Pandemic forcing the dates to be shifted thrice, it was ordained that these brothers should become full-fledged Carmelites on the day of the blessed birth of St. John the Baptist i.e., 24th June 2021. Thus, the solemn mass was held at 3:30 PM in the Infant Jesus Shrine, Carmel Hill, Bikarnakatte, Mangalore. The strict protocols of the pandemic disallowed the gathering of the faithful in the Church. Nevertheless, with the esteemed presence of our neighbouring communities of Ryshivana, Asha Deepa, Koteshwar, Fr Rudolph Raj Pinto, the newly Doctor in Liturgy and Fr Elias D’Cunha

TIDINGS FROM OUR COMMUNITIES

1. NEWSREEL FROM MARGAO A golden friar! Fr. Jossey Rodrigues, was to join his companions, Frs. Charles Serrao and Joe Tauro on the 6th of April, 2021, to thank God for granting them 50 years in the garden of Carmel, at the province level celebration at Mangaluru. Unfortunately, he had to be admitted in the hospital due to his varicose veins and he could not travel. The local community at Margao, gathered around the Eucharistic table along with Fr. Provincial on 25th of July, 2021 to celebrate this event. During the short and modest felicitation programme in the refectory, Fr. Provincial shared some of the sterling qualities of Fr. Jossey and his immense service in various communities of the province. He described him as a “silent sufferer” who never complains or makes known his pain to others. In the last few years, he has faced many health issues, often leading to sleepless nights, but he has never stopped smiling and joyfully going about his duties in the monastery. While we thank God for his precious gift, we pray earnestly that God keep and bless him abundantly. The postulants wished the jubilarian in song and finally Fr. Jossey expressed his sentiments. Due to travel restrictions and other cumbersome legal procedures, Fr. Jossey’s family members who were very eager to be present on the occasion, could not make it. We are grateful to them for their prayerful support. Flower of Carmel, blossoming blooming one! - The novenas and feast Masses of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, were livestreamed this year, since only a limited number of people, besides the community members could participate. Mr. Fernando Dias Velho, an architect by profession, who has been involved with the Heritage Site at Chimbel, has published a book along with Dr. Sidh Losa Mendiratta, titled, The Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Chimbel. They have painstakingly collected all the documents and pictures related to the Carmelite Tertiaries who lived there from 1747-1835 and systematically arranged them in the book, to give us glimpse of the rich legacy the Chimbel Carmelites have left behind. The book was released at the hands of the Provincial on 27th of July, 2021 at Carmelite Monastery, Margao, in the presence of the Local Conservation Committee at Chimbel. Participation had to be restricted due to the ongoing pandemic and Government regulations for gatherings. We acknowledge the contribution of Fr. Archibald Gonsalves (the previous local Superior) towards this publication, which will go a long way to help us in our efforts to reclaim the property. Fr. Provincial congratulated and thanked Mr. Fernando, who was present on the occasion and Dr. Sidh is currently based in Portugal. Fr. Anthony D’Souza, who is a member of our community at Mapusa, has been authorized by the Archbishop-Patriarch of Goa and Daman, to assist the Parish Priest of Ribandar, by carrying out pastoral ministry at the Chapel of Our Lady of Livra-Febres, Chimbel. The Mass was followed by adoration, praying for the sanctification of priests. It concluded at noon, with the recitation of Sext and Matins by the entire community. Various associations connected to the monastery, took turns in conducting the adoration. Reaching out! With the help offered by generous benefactors, we are able to carry a lot of charitable activities throughout the year.

Each beneficiary is chosen after proper scrutiny. b) Three parishes in Goa, namely Valpoi, Usgao and Dabal, were badly affected by torrential rains. People made contributions in kind or cash with which we procured a lot of relief material. All this was routed through the local parish priests, who made available the list of what the people needed most. c) During the second wave, there was curfew imposed in the state and many migrant workers had no means of livelihood. We cooked kichdi and distributed it daily to around 100 people for three weeks. d) The new Destitute Home at Lar, which is still not occupied due to the pandemic, has been designated by the South Goa Collector and District Magistrate as a “Covid Centre” for asymptomatic girl children who need to be isolated and cannot be quarantined at home, due to lack of space. Five NGO’s have come together under the Carmelite Monastery, Margao, to offer this free service. Besides all equipment and medication that may be needed, there is a nurse to monitor the condition of the children. A pediatrician will visit the centre daily and when necessary. One bed is reserved in the South Goa District Hospital, in case of any emergency. 2. MOTHER HOUSE - ST. JOSEPH’S MONASTERY! The feast of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated with a concelebrated mass presided over by Fr. Rudolph Pinto, who also preached a meaningful homily. The Independence Day was honored by the hoisting the flag by Br. Baptist Rodrigues. On this day we paid our respect to the nation and remembered all the freedom martyrs. At 9 a.m. the cricket match between fathers and brothers was held and the senior boys though lost gave a good fight. Love, Laughter, happily ever after: While we pray to be espoused by Christ our Bridegroom, the Carmelites also help couples to enter into an unconditional espousal of love on Earth. DHYANAVANA –MEDITATION GARDEN Silver Jubilee Batch: Religious sisters, from different states of India began their journey in the last week of June 2021 towards Mysore, the historical city of Palaces. They formed the 25th batch of Spirituality Diploma Course at Dhyanavana. After being quarantined for few days, they were gradually initiated into the daily routine of the Institute. The Course was solemnly inaugurated on the 4th of July 2021. The concelebrated Eucharistic celebration began at 7 am, having Fr. John Sequeira as the main celebrant. With the lighting of the lamp, the course was declared open. Fr. John, in his meaningful homily, sketched out a brief description of the birth and the gradual growth of Dhyanavana, which indeed has a history of more than 25 years, and he also enumerated the two-fold significance of this institute – spiritual maturity and academic excellence. We are happy to have 24 sisters at present, belonging to different Religious Congregations and 24 more attending this course online. Some among them are expected to join us soon. Scapular Feast: The solemn feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a traditional Carmelite Scapular feast which later became a universal Church celebration, was

In his well-delivered homily, he narrated the history of the origin of this scapular devotion and also highlighted the significance and the relevance of scapular today. After the concluding prayer, scapulars were blessed and distributed to be worn, a garment that reminds us of our belonging to Mary and the pledge of her maternal protection in this life and after. Birthday Bells Chime: The Dhyanavana community got into a celebrative mood as it began its preparation to wish the birthday boy, baba Dominic, on the 4th of August, 2021. It began with the Eucharistic celebration at 6 pm and the chief and concelebrants were welcomed in the chapel through a well-performed dance by our sisters. Fr. John Sequeira, the preacher of the day, beautifully enumerated the qualities and the dignity of a priest, keeping in mind the saint of the day St. John Mary Vianney. After a significant celebration in the chapel, which was well decorated with flowers and a meaningful liturgy, we all moved to the refectory. It was delightful to see our sisters wishing Fr. Dominic in different languages, and finally, we all moved towards the banquet table that was spread with a variety of dishes. We all indeed enjoyed a sumptuous meal, an outcome of the culinary skills of Fr. Prasanna Kumar. 4. RYSHIVANA JOTTINGS Covid Response: The community of Ryshivana experienced the cruelty of the Covid-19 virus and the surprising after-effects as well. However, that made them feel one with the local people and hence gave expression to sharing in their plight by prayers as well as providing substantial food kits for twenty families around. New Look & New Responses: Ryshivana needed to freshen itself to regain its luster also externally and so due to the absence of summer retreat participants on account of Covid lockdown, embarked on giving a coat of paint to the whole edifice. At the same time, they shifted the statue of Jesus Salvator Mundi – that was at the edge of the wall, to a very strategic location so that it could be seen and inspire people to pray. While the statue went up, a new escalator was installed to help the senior participants of the course who find it difficult to go up and down the floors for various activities. They were blessed on August 7th 2021.

Abuzz with New Life again: Covid or not, life has to go on! On the 1st August sisters began to come in from all directions, some 25 of them as students of the longer spirituality course. After a week of quarantine, on the 7th Ryshivana

Rathan Nicholas Almeida, currently the Dean of Dhyanavana, rendered an inspiring Lectio Brevis on the theme, “Jesus Christ Unique and universal - a Philosopher par Excellence…” While Fr. Oswald Crasta presented the report of the academic year 2020-21, Fr. Rector welcomed the audience. The College is blessed with 15 new students this year for the first year of Philosophy. While seven from among them belong to our own Province, six are from Delhi Province and two are from the Order of the Norbertines. Our student strength for this academic year therefore is 31. The Institute is thankful to God for these abundant blessings and at the same time grateful for the Delhi Province and Norbertine Order for reposing their faith in us. The entire KG Province accompanies the Rector, Staff and students through their prayerful fraternal support and wishes them God’s choicest blessings as they commence the new academic year.

5. REGENCY Regents on their Mission: The regents having completed their philosophical studies at Pushpashrama have been assigned the following communities for their community experience. • Br Stin George – Asha Deepa, Madanthyar • Br Hilary Rodrigues – Avila Jyothi, Mapusa • Br Loy Jackson Crasta – Carmel Nivas, Londa 6. THEOLOGY New beginning at Carmel Hill: “Becoming a priest or a man or woman religious is not primarily our own decision. Rather it is the response to a call and to a call of love.” – Pope Francis. In the voyage of love, captained by the Lord, the last sail that is unfurled in the long formation of priesthood is the precious four years of Theological Studies. Despite the onslaughts of the pandemic, with firm trust in patronage of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Joseph’s Monastery, Carmel Hill, officially inaugurated the academic year 2021 – 2022. The year was officiated at 7 pm through the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Charles Serrao, the Prior of the community, concelebrated by Fr. Lancy Lewis – the Master of Students, Fr. Barnabas and other priests of the community. By the lighting of the lamp, the community sought the assistance of the ‘Light of the World’ to lead us in faith, wisdom and discretion throughout the year. Fr. Charles in his homily centred on the ‘Beatitudes’ addressed the students to live a life of conviction based on the principles of discipline, academic excellence, integrity and responsibility. The community rejoices in having 7 brothers in the first year, 5 in the second and third year and 3 in their final year that makes up a total of 20 theology students. The Lord has indeed blessed our province with vocations which will be fructified by theological studies. The mass concluded with the resonance of solemn ‘Salve Regina’ after which the friars joined for a fraternal meal!

FROM THE PROVINCIAL DELEGATION OF CANADA

1. FR. IVAN SANCTIS FAREWELL & BIRTHDAY A dual celebration at Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre, Edmonton on July 12, 2021 indeed needs to be pompous. The community fathers gathered together to celebrate the birthday and farewell of Fr. Ivan Sanctis. The celebration began with the Holy Eucharist followed by celebratory food. All the fathers wished Fr. Ivan and praised him for his selfless service towards the growth of the Centre. Special thanks went to Fr. Jerald D’Souza, Fr. Mario Fernandes, and Fr. Rajesh Madtha

15 who took special care in arranging the celebration. Fr. Venil D’Souza and Fr. Rajesh D’Souza also joined in the festivities. Everyone wished Fr. Ivan a day filled with happiness and a year filled with peace and joy in his future ministry. 2. MOUNT CARMEL SPIRITUALITY CENTRE - EDMONTON, ALBERTA Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre continued to offer spiritual support throughout the pandemic. The Centre was open daily from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm for visitors to come and pray. Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre is both for spirituality and a pilgrim center and more people are expected to pray and spend quiet time with Jesus after the lockdown is relaxed. In the month of July, many activities took place at the Centre. On July 10, Fr. Jerald D’Souza, Provincial Delegate, made a pastoral visit of the OCDS of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face group. On July 12, the OCDS group and St. Joseph Community, Calgary joined in the celebration of Fr. Ivan Sanctis’ birthday. There was a Eucharistic celebration with Fr. Jerald as the main celebrant. This was followed by a grand celebration at which all wished Fr. Ivan well and Fr. Mario Fernandes, Director of the Centre, presented him with a gift in appreciation of his sacrifice and service towards the Centre. There was an additional celebration on July 14, the day of Fr. Ivan’s birthday and a farewell which was well attended by many who knew him. The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was celebrated at 7:00 pm on July 16. More than 200 people participated as attendance restrictions had been lifted in Alberta. Fr. Ray Guimond, former President of the Centre, previously known as Ephphatha House, was the main celebrant. He spoke about Our Lady’s protection of the Centre and her plans for the Carmelite Spirituality Centre. An episcopal choir sang beautifully for the occasion. After the Mass, scapulars were distributed to all in attendance and followed by a reception in the hall.

On August 14th the Centre hosted a Mount Carmel Golf Tournament with twenty- eight golfers participating. There was a demand for higher participation but when it was organized, it was specified that the number was limited to twenty-eight. 3. FEAST OF MOUNT CARMEL - ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH, CALEDONIA After many months of lockdown due to the increase of COVID cases, health and safety restrictions were partially lifted in the Province of Ontario on July 16, 2021, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This meant that attendance of religious services was unrestricted. It was a blessing for all, and particularly for the parishioners of St. Patrick’s Parish. In spite of the restrictions on attendance in the preceding three days, parishioners prepared for the feast with a novena.

16

The Solemnity was celebrated by Fr. Jerome Mascarenhas. The attendance was overwhelming considering that the feast day fell on the first day of the re-opening of the churches. This would account for the exuberance during the Eucharistic celebration. Scapulars were blessed and distributed to the parishioners and devotees of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. 4. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL - ST. EDMUND’S CHURCH With government health and safety restrictions lifted, St. Edmund’s Church, North Vancouver, BC, opened wide its doors on Friday, July 16, 2021 to welcome the community at large and devotees of Our Lady who faithfully attended the Solemnity of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel which is preceded by a nine-day novena. Our Carmelite friars in the immediate area came together for the occasion. Fr. John Pinto was the main celebrant along with con-celebrants, Fr. Steny Mascarenhas, Fr. Cannio Cardozo, Fr. Alex Braganza, and Fr. Victor Fernandes. Secular Carmelite members of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Jesus communities also joined the celebration. In his homily, Fr. Alex Braganza reflected on the words of the Gospel and the Carmelite charism. He also encouraged contemplation of “God’s presence” in silence and solitude which speaks dearly of the Carmelite charism. Special prayers were offered for Fr. Steny Mascarenhas, who celebrated his silver jubilee of religious profession, and Fr. Jaison Tellis who celebrated his 10th year of priestly ordination. The celebration ended with the blessing of hundreds of brown scapulars by Fr. John Pinto and the distribution to the congregation. 5. FEAST OF SCAPULAR: ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH, CALGARY The Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was celebrated with grandeur and glory on the 17th of July, 2021 at St. Thomas More Parish, Calgary. Most. Rev. William McGrattan, Bishop of the Calgary Diocese was the main celebrant and concelebrants were Fr. Jerald D’Souza, Fr. Rajesh D’Souza and Fr. Venil D’Souza; and attended by Deacons Norman Dumais and Dale Laing. It was a day to thank the Lord for showering innumerable blessings on the parish community through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Secular members of St. Joseph Community and around 300 people participated in the celebration. The solemnity was meaningfully celebrated through 9 days of novena. Music and songs were provided by a husband-and-wife team, Garth and Cecilia Fritze. Included in their beautiful selections were renditions of Flos Carmeli, O Santissima and Salve Regina. The Knights of Columbus led the entrance and recessional processions, forming an honour guard in the aisle and adding much pomp and ceremony to the event. Scapulars blessed by Bishop and were distributed to the faithful.
