Purpose of this Assumption The year-day concept is a method of scaling time periods found in prophecies SDA historicists call apocalyptic in Daniel and Revelation. By calculating the days involved in the time period and then assuming those days are ―symbolic” days, the ―literal‖ period involved can be computed. These periods of time are inevitably much longer than those given in the text. This topic is not just a exegetical exercise; rather, historicists tell us it is an issue that people have sacrificed their lives and the lives of their families over in the past. Historicists remind us that it was through the use of the year-day principle that Rome was identified as the Antichrist of the Middle Ages, and resisted by the Protestant movement. One historicist makes this connection between the year-day principle and the sacrifice this belief has cost the church in past ages: As T.R. Birks notes, the Day-Year Principle was the ―first object of attack‖ because it had not only helped identified the Papal Antichrist in Rome but had also showed that the papal antichrist rule would last for 1,260 years, exactly. The rule of the Papacy, in fact, did last for exactly 1,260 years, for Papa‘s rule spanned the time from when the Roman Catholics gained control of Rome after the expulsion of the Ostrogoths as they were driven out of the city in 538 A.D., and afterwards Rome ―made war on the saints‖, and this period of rule extended down to A.D. 1798 when Napoleon‘s army eventually entered Rome under General Berthier and took the Pope captive to France, where he died in exile under house arrest – a period of exactly and precisely 1,260 years! The Futurists, to relieve Rome of any guilt, sweep this heinous history of the ―Dark Ages‖ under the carpet, and point with great gusto to a yet coming, future Antichrist that is yet to arise – they discount the Day-Year Principle whenever Rome or Antichrist or Babylon is discussed.... The Bible, on the other hand, speaks plainly of a present Antichrist making ―war on the saints‖ and ruling for 1,260 years from the ―great city‖ of Rome in Italy according to the Day-Year Principle. Historicists recognize the fearful place that Antichrist has already played in the world‘s history, where for many bloody centuries the Spanish Inquisition and papal armies have killed millions of true Christians, murdered in the name of religion and truth. These saints however did not deny their Christ, and because of the ―word of their testimony‖, they were heinously burnt to a crisp in the fires and Autos-da-f of martyrdom, or hanged, or drowned, stabbed, garrotted, shot to death, blown up with bags of gunpowder tied around their necks, wives and daughters ravished before their eyes, etc.; and, all the while during such persecutions these stalwart men pointed their finger at Rome and boldly declared: ―Thou art Antichrist!‖ I don‘t know of anyone who has died a martyr‘s death defending the pre-Tribulation Rapture. (see extract by H. Frizell Snr in Appendix) Therefore, historicists see the acknowledgement of the fallacy of the year-day principle as akin to betraying the testimony of all the saints before them who raised their voices against the corruptions of Rome. In these historicists‘ eyes it would be a virtual abandonment of all that is truly Protestant. Viewed from this perspective, one can appreciate how emotionally-charged any defence is against an argument that weakens the strength of the year-day theory for SDA historicists. Notwithstanding

Dan 7:25; Rev 11:2; 12:14; 13:s) as 1,260 years; the 1,290 days of Dan 1211 as 1,290 years; the 1,335 days of Dan 1212 as 1,335 years; and the 2,300 evenings and mornings of Dan 8:14 (also NASB, NIV)' as 5300 years.2 But several critics have blamed the historicist school for applying inconsistently the year-day hermeneutical principle to some specific Bible prophecies and not to other ones. FOUNDATIONAL PROPOSITIONS 1 God is sovereign and rules over all, 1 Chron. 29:10-13 God's sovereignty refers to His rule, authority, or kingdom, and expressions of His sovereignty are found throughout the Bible (Ps. 103:19; Lam.5:19). His sovereignty extends to ALL creation and includes the angelic realm. All things are subject to His authority. 2 Satan has rebelled against God's right to rule, Ez.28; Isa.14 Lucifer was a prominent person in a powerful position, and he wanted to be independent of any authority outside of himself. His rebellion brought chaos to the earth and the false kingdom of Satan was set up. Satan's rebellion raises a very important question: IS GOD SOVEREIGN? God must reestablish His sovereignty in light of Satan's rebellion. Therefore, God formed the earth into a habitable place and purposed to populate it with created intelligences through which He could establish the fact of His authority. 3 God is demonstrating in time and on earth His right to rule God is developing what may be called the "Theocratic Kingdom" program on earth to demonstrate His right to rule. God delegates His authority to different administrators on earth and through them demonstrates His right to rule. When men submit to these God-appointed authorities, they demonstrate God's right to rule. So the earth is a stage on which the drama is enacted to show the creature had no right to rebel against the Creator.

The kingdom of God occupies a prominent place in the NT; it is also evident in the OT (Ps 456; Isa 93.This article surveys the various interpretations of the kingdom of God in Dan 2:44, particularly during the patristic period and the last two hundred years. In Daniel 2 the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar sees in a dream the image of a man whose head is of gold, his breast and arms of silver, his abdomen and his thighs of bronze, his legs of iron, and his feet part iron and part clay. While viewing this picture the king sees a stone cut loose without hands smiting the statue upon its feet of iron and clay and demolishing the whole statue. The stone then becomes a huge mountain which fills the whole earth (Dan 2:32-35). In his interpretation, Daniel identifies the four metal parts of the statue as four successive kingdoms. The stone is the kingdom of God, which will crush and bring to an end all the kingdoms of this world and then stand forever (Dan 2:44).

  • Prophetic Symbols: Interpreting Bible Prophecy
    Prophetic Symbols: Interpreting Bible Prophecy Spoken since the beginning of the world (Luke 1:70), Bible prophecies are testaments of Jesus Christ, given freely for all to understand (Rev 1:1), but especially to those who honor and obey Him (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12). Prophecy reflects God's loving character and timelessness, showing that He not only speaks history before it occurs (revealing present truth and foretelling future truths), but gives men insight to that which would cause them to stray from His salvation (John 14:6). Bible prophecies, spoken and interpreted only by God’s Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:19-21), were often written using symbols and imagery. These literary tools would first protect the message from tampering, while they sift-out the casual, carefree reader, in exchange for those who would diligently seek God's understanding [(Hebrews 11:6; Jeremiah 29:13; 2 Chronicles 16:9) – spiritual things are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:12- 16)]. When reading Bible prophecy, it is important to apply God’s given rules (see the study: William Miller’s 14 Rules of Bible Interpretation) for understanding and interpreting the symbols and figures, recognizing that symbolic prophecies have literal statements interspersed, which serve as a key for the rest: i.e. they have a mixed character.
