ANNUAL REPORT 2020 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A REPORT FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

It is an understatement to say that 2020 was a challenging year, as the pandemic played havoc with as it did with the rest of the world. What was to be a celebration of our 40th year at the Forks of the Thames and the 80th anniversary of our organization’s founding, instead was an exercise in adapting to the realities of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The year started off normally but after COVID-19 hit in March, the Museum was shuttered for a six-month period. We were fortunate to qualify for the federal wage subsidy program, so we were able to keep our full-time staff working at home throughout this period. We did however need to our focus from in- person to online programming delivery.

COVID-19 aside, we continued to deliver strong exhibitions to our visitors. In addition to the ongoing Taking The Long View, we drew on our permanent collection to present Realisms: Canadian Art, 1850 to the Present as well as Gaawiin Ogiibagidenaawaasiiwaawan / They Did Not Let It Go which took the Robert Houle painting, Ipperwash, as the catalyst to discuss the 25th anniversary of the Ipperwash crisis. We also presented several history exhibitions. Both 100 Years of Nursing Education in London and Black Lives Matter, London benefitted from important contributions from key community stakeholders. For its part, Sit on It! featured rarely seen chairs as well as artworks to convey unique stories about London, Londoners, and the history of seating. Although pandemic closures limited public access to the exhibitions, staff created video tours as an alternative way to enjoy them.

These exhibitions were once again complemented by a strong public programs schedule. Our online programs focused on maintaining the Museum’s connection to the community virtually during periods when we were closed to the public. When the Museum reopened in the fall and briefly in this winter, we followed public health measures to protect visitors, staff, and instructors by not encouraging gatherings and instead providing personal mobile options such as free, unlimited access to virtual curator tours, talks, and tutorials as well as children’s art kits for at-home use, and all-night projections for external viewing.

We have offered a rich diversity of new programs and exhibitions during the pandemic including the installation of seven new exhibitions and innovative new programs such as the Art Hour, Artist Minutes, and unlimited access to curator-led virtual tours.

Our education programming was also significantly affected by the pandemic. Scheduled field trips to Museum London ended on March 13, 2020 and we were still able to deliver 2735 educational programs in 2020, but we had to cancel 4390 programs as well during the year. We developed new multi-media curriculum- based websites featuring works from the permanent collection to continue to deliver educational programming to students online as well as new digital teacher resources cross-curricular lesson plans, developed in partnership with Indigenous educator Brenda Collins, and a French language smart board program, created by student teachers. BOARD REPORT CONTINUED

With the support of Life, we were also able to create art kits to be sent to schools and we reached 1802 students in 76 classes at 21 schools with this program. It was a year where the Tour Guides and our Education Curator made the best of a bad situation.

We continue to be excited about the possibilities of the Centre at the Forks, thanks to the generous support of Museum London donors. Understandably and unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Centre at the Forks was quieter than we would have hoped for during most of 2020 after engaging Londoners and visitors in an impressive variety of activities in the first 18 months of its existence. We know that the community is as anxious as we are to once again welcome visitors to the Centre and we will be doing so as soon as protocols allow. We continued to add to our art collection in 2020 including purchases of work by Esmaa Mohamoud, Larry Towell, and Kirtley Jarvis, as well as significant donations of works by James Morrice, Emily Carr, Ed Pien, Evan Penny, and Greg Curnoe. And our material culture collection was greatly enhanced by hundreds of objects given by dozens of generous donors in the community including items related to Black Lives Matter and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Museum is very fortunate to receive significant funding annually from the City of London, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Arts Council. Just as important, an integral part of our ability to provide engaging experiences is made possible by the financial support of members of the community who are committed to the Museum’s mission and ongoing work.

Museum London values the great generosity of its donors who responded very positively throughout the past year. These individuals and organizations make it possible for us to preserve and tell the story of London and Londoners through art, artifacts, and programming. Thank you to all of our volunteers who exemplified patience, understanding and perseverance as we navigated, and continue to navigate, through the COVID-19 pandemic.

With many of our volunteer roles being indefinitely paused, others transitioning to virtual roles, and the minority operating in-person with increased safety protocols, our 131 volunteers impressively still contributed 3048 hours of service. We are proud to recognize our Tour Guides, Retail & Art Sales Assistants, Outreach Assistants, Event & Program Assistants, and all of our various Board and Committee members who have helped with visitor experience and engagement throughout COVID-19 and continue to do so. Each of these groups of volunteers were flexible to what was needed of them throughout the year and adapted their roles to create a safer environment for our visitors, both on-site and virtually.

We look forward to hosting on-site activities again when the threat of infection from COVID-19 and its variants have lessened, which will be a gradual process as public gathering allowances increase. Until that time, please remain safe.

WAYS OF BEING Yhonnie Scarce and Michael BelMore

Ways of Being: Yhonnie Scarce & Michael Belmore Text: Julian Jason Haladyn, Miriam Jordan-Haladyn, Cassandra Getty 54 pages ISBN: 978-1-988672-06-9 $30.00

This two-person exhibition brings into dialogue the work of the Australian Aboriginal artist Yhonnie Scarce (Kokatha and Nukunu peoples) and the Canadian First Nations artist Michael Belmore (Ojibway). Working primarily in glass, Scarce makes visible the oppressive histories of Aboriginal peoples in Australia, examining relations between human bodies and the land. Through his deliberate use of materials, especially metal and stone, Belmore’s work similarly embodies Indigenous knowledge, material realities of the land, and the experience of living in relation to its sense of time.

Both artists explore notions of being in the world that express parallel histories of repression, colonial practices that set out to dehumanize. Ways of Being looks at the artistic practices of Scarce and Belmore as they critically celebrate Indigenous ways of knowing the world, which represent a valuable potential for rethinking our world in a time of global crisis.

Ways of Being is guest curated by Miriam Jordan-Haladyn (Oneida) and Julian Jason Haladyn. Both are academics, writers, and curators based in London. 2020 VISUAL ART NEW ACQUISITIONS
