Prior to this, Trinidad and Tobago, as a British colony, participated in the system of Commonwealth Awards conferred by Her Majesty the Queen of England. These Commonwealth Awards comprised the Peerage and Baronetage, Privy Councillors, various Orders of Knighthood, Decorations and Medals, in Civil and Military Divisions.

On gaining independence from Britain in 1962, it was decided that Trinidad and Tobago should have its own National Awards. This decision was effected on 21st December 1967 when Cabinet decided there should be seven (7) categories and fourteen (14) classes of National Awards. This was subsequently amended to four (4) categories and ten (10) classes of National Awards. In 1969, in commemoration of the Independence anniversary, National Awards were presented for the first time.

National Awards Committee oversees the process for the nomination for National Awards annually. To ensure fair consideration is given to a wide cross-section of nominees, the National Awards Committee invites the public to submit the names of nominees annually. All citizens of Trinidad and Tobago of distinction, alive or deceased are eligible to be considered. The members of the National Awards Committee thoroughly investigate the nominees’ activities in the field, after which, the Committee LOWERING OF the Union Jack and the first hoisting of Trinidad and Tobago’s considers all the recommendations submitted. According to the 1969 Constitution of the Order of the Trinity, the Prime Minister had the right to accept, reject, or add to the list. HE TRINITY CROSS, which is 1969 was unveiled as the country’s highest nation- al award, was the result of a national competition to select a design for the prestigious award. The winner of the competition was librarian Wilhelmina Mc Dowell.

In the 1940’s Mc Dowell became a student of prominent Trinidadian artist, M.P Alladin. He encouraged her early talent and laid the foundation for the sketch which would become her most celebrated piece.

Towards the end of the 1960’s, as Trinidad and Tobago stood on the brink of inde- pendence, Mc Dowell , a Woodbrook, resident, entered and won a nationwide com- petition to design the Trinity Cross.

Her careful meticulous drawing in black Indian ink captured the beauty of the twin-islands. Through the use of two rare birds unique to Trinidad and Tobago mounted on a simple cross, the Cocorico and the Scarlet Ibis evoked a sense of pride and nationalism at a pivotal time in the country’s coming of age.

t its centre Ms. Mc Dowell depicted the Trinity Hills, reputed to be the first land sighting of Trinidad and Tobago by Christopher Columbus. For Mc Dowell, the insignia of the cross used in the design represented merit and distinction, a symbol worn by knights of the highest order in recognition of their bravery.

To date there are sixty eight holders of the original Trinity Cross for their contribution to Law, Justice, Trade Unionism, Medicine, Science, Education, the Arts and Culture, Sport, National and Regional Development and more. In 2008 the award was redesigned and renamed the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

PAGE 74 he Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was installed as Trinidad and Tobago’s new highest national award in 2008 and replaces the Trinity Cross for Distinguished and Outstanding Service to Trinidad and Tobago.

The design of the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago acknowledges the contribution of the first inhabitants of Trinidad and Tobago as embodied in the crest surmounting the medallion. The waves and constellation tell the story that Trinidad and Tobago consists of people from all over the world and their descendants, combining particular social and cultural attributes to produce a special, talented people with a great potential to live in harmony and prosperity.

The award is 18 carat yellow gold and hangs from a short length striped gros-grain ribbon in the national colours, red, white and black. On the front of the award, there are three circles each encompassing a feature of the National Symbols of Trinidad and Tobago, with a crest at the top. Within the crest is a feathered headdress of an Amerindian chief which represents the Amerindian culture of the twin-islands.

The centre of the design features a disc upon which one of our national birds, the Scarlet Ibis is standing on the south western peninsula of Trinidad with the Mot Mot perched on the image of Tobago, both imposed in bas-leaf. At the top and side of the circle is the Chaconia, the National Flower of Trinidad and Tobago.

n the middle circle there is a display of the twelve outer notes of a tenor pan. These twelve notes represent the many social and cultural contributions that the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago have made to their country. Upon these notes is a pair of pan sticks. The steel pan is represented on the award as it is the National instrument of the twin-island republic. Within the third and outer circles are images which represent the sea and sky. The waves at the bottom represent the sea whilst the sky is represented via clusters of star shapes and fine granulation.

On the back of the award, the words “Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago” are engraved.

The name of the Society to replace the Order of the Trinity is The Distinguished Society of Trinidad and Tobago and the initials O.R.T.T. is to be used by future holders of the award after their names.

In 2008, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was awarded to the following recipients for Distinguished and Outstanding Service to Trinidad and Tobago in the field of Steelpan Development.
