CGPP and Weekly Project Implementation Updates Aug 20-26, 2018

1.1 Key Highlights o No new cVDPVs were detected or environmental isolates in both Kenya and Somalia o CGPP-HOA new project in county trained 22 Health staffs and six community mobilizers on integrated disease surveillance and routine immunization services. 1.2 AFP surveillance & case detection o Sub-County: 9 CMs conducted AFP case search in the project sites and visited 412 households, and no AFP case reported. o County: The project CMs conducted social mobilization on AFP surveillance in 122 villages in the 16 border facilities reaching 97,175 people with key messages. o County: Active AFP case search done in 3 villages (Bori, Golole, and Dambala Fachana) in sub-county reaching about 315 person and 73 HH. No AFP case reported. CM from Illeret reported an AFP case from a community unit on the 18/8/2018. The AFP case was a 10 months old girl and the samples sent to KEMRI reference laboratory o Lower Juba: The 9 CMs conducted HH visits and reached 285 HHs with approximate populations of 2855 individuals into border villages, with no case of AFP found. o Gedo Juba: Conducted mother to mother awareness creation sessions on R1 & SIA targeting 120 IDPS/Returnees in Belet-Hawa and Elwak district. 1.3 Strengthening Routine Immunization o Dhobley, Somalia: The EPI outreach conducted for one HFs and one hard-to-reach session (Dhobley & Deg-Elema ). A total of 68 children immunized. o : Supported social mobilization for Routine immunization and defaulter tracing in 3 villages (Bori, Golole, and Dambala Fachana) in Moyale sub-county. o Wajir County: 3 CMs supported defaulter tracing in Wajir North border health facilities. o Garissa Sub-County: The project supported 11 RI outreach sessions reaching 327 children reached in 13 Villages. 1.4 Cross-Border Coordination o Lamu, Kenya: A cross-border health coordination committee meeting was held in Lamu Island to discuss the implementation of the new cross-border polio project and the upcoming bOPV campaign. 1.5 SIA: No polio SIAs campaign conducted in Kenya and Somalia during the week. 1.6 Social Mobilization o Gedo region, Somalia: The CGPP project CHVs in Belet-Hawo district held social mobilization for RI services in 12 villages. o Lower Juba-Somalia: The Community Mobilizers conducted three community dialogue sessions on RI, AFP detection at Dhobley, Diff, Ras-Kamboni and Kulbiyow, 420 beneficiaries. o : Social mobilization for routine immunization services & sensitization on AFP in cross-border health facilities done by CM reaching approximately 12,097 beneficiaries. o Wajir County: The 16 CMs supported social mobilizations for active AFP case search and routine immunization in 122 villages. o Marsabit County: Supported community dialogue meeting on AFP surveillance in Godoma village with 24 persons who are community opinion leaders. o Garissa Sub-County: The 9 CMs carried out social mobilization on RI and AFP in the border areas and nomadic settlements and reached 412 households.

1.7 Effective partnerships/Meetings o Wajir County: The CGPP Project officer Participated department of health integrated strategic plan 2018 – 2023. o Turkana County: Held a coordination meeting with the CHMT on outreach services for Turkana West and Kibish. 1.8 Coordination and support o CGPP-HoA secretariat. Participated in GPEI Horn of Africa partners and Tripartite country meeting on August 23, 2018, at UNON complex. CGPP project supported and participated in the Kenya Africa Region Certification Committee(ARCC) report review meeting. Participated in the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD)/MOH preparatory meeting for the launch of the bOPV campaign in Garissa. The launch will be attended by the Ministers of Health from Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia o Turkana County: Participated in the County Health Strategic and Investment Plan (CSIP) Conference held in town, Turkana West Sub County 1.9 Training, Workshops, and conferences o Gedo region, Somalia: Supported CHVs training on community-based AFP surveillance, Routine immunization, and SIAs),37 CHVs and 4 CMs trained in Elwak district. 1.10 The security situation and other challenges o No major security incident reported in the border areas of Kenya & Somalia

1.11 Planned activities, Week of 27th August 2018 Figure 1: CHV training in Elwak district of Somalia o CGPP Secretariat: Project review meeting WVK project teams and participate in the Kenya National Post-SIA review workshop. o Turkana County: Participate in a cross-border meeting in Kapoeta East, South Sudan and conduct social mobilizations through CMs for AFP surveillance. o Wajir County: Engage county to plan the project review meeting. o Marsabit County: Planned for CMs training on CBS on the 29th- 30th August 2018. o Gedo region, Somalia: Participate in the planning for a Joint cross-border workshop in Kismayo and conduct Joint supportive supervision for health facilities in Elwak District. o Garissa Sub-County: Plan for Monthly Cross-border meeting & Support integrated supportive supervision using ODK tool. o Lower Juba Region, Somalia: Attend Monthly cluster coordination meeting and conduct Joint CGPP/MOH Health Facilities Supervision at Dhobley & Diff.
