Print This paper on the Swiss firm of Metzler was read at the foundation conference of the British Institute of Organ Stuidies in 1976 and was published in The Organ Yearbook VIII (1977) p64. Someone may be able to comment on the development of the firm in the twenty years since then. A NEW DIRECTION IN ORGAN BUILDING REFLECTED IN THE HISTORY OF METZLER UND SOHNE David Kinsela (London) (1) It was in 1890 that Jakob Metzler, an Austrian who had migrated from Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald, started an organ workshop in Felsberg, near mountain-walled Chur (Kanton Graubunden). Initially he was concerned with repairing and rebuilding small mechanical instruments, not following the new fashion for pneumatic action until about l905. Some of his work still exists in villages of Graubunden. Jakob Metzler died in 1925, having already passed the business to his two sons. There was a shortage of work, however, in this backwood region impoverished by post-war inflation and in l930 Herr Oskar Metzler moved down to a central, industrialised area, setting up his own workshop in Dietikon, below Zurich. He soon had work enough for ten employees and attracted skilled hands. In 1934 he gambled on the erection of the present grey three-storey workshop block and started fabricating his own metal pipes. According to size, his organs had pneumatic or electric action, but from 1935 he reverted to slider chests in all cases. Important 45-stop instruments were provided for the Pfarrkirche, Muri (1937) and the Stadtkirche, Biel (1943). -

Thomas Hirschhorn DE-PIXELATION 530 West 21st Street October 28, 2017 – January 13, 2018 Opening October 27, 6-8pm Gladstone Gallery is pleased to present DE-PIXELATION, an exhibition of new work from Thomas Hirschhorn’s Pixel-Collage series. Over the last two years, Hirschhorn has embarked on this deeply personal, political and socially-engaged body of work that explores the limitations and deceitfulness of imagery found throughout popular culture and the media. Employing a mix of collaging techniques, Hirschhorn’s work from the Pixel-Collage series calls into question the legitimacy of imagery that has been altered to protect the viewer from unpleasant depictions of gruesome human suffering and violence. This exhibition marks the conclusion of the Pixel-Collage series. In a statement from the artist: “De-Pixelation” is the title of my exhibition at Gladstone Gallery. I will exclusively present new “Pixel-Collage”. The exhibition will mark the ending of the “Pixel-Collage”-series that I have been working on for two years. My engagement in the problematic of ‘pixelation’ and ‘de-pixelation’ comes from the decision to see and look at the world as it is, and to insist in doing so. I believe that ‘de-pixelation’, ‘pixelation’, blurring or masking and furthermore censorship or self- censorship, is a growing and insidious issue, also in the social media today. I don’t accept that, under the claim of ‘protecting’ - protecting me, protecting the other - the world is pixelated in my place. I want, I can, I need and I must use my own eyes to see everything in our world, as act of emancipation. -

Press Release June 10, 2008 TIEFENRAUSCH Art and Guided Tours in the Underworlds of Linz May 30 – July 13, 2008 A Project by the OK Center for Contemporary Art for Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture OK | Museum of the Underworlds Aktienkeller | Stream of Forgetting Landstraße | Manhole Covers Linz Underground | Crypts, Tunnels, Cisterns OK Platz | 40,000 Liters of Attersee Lake Water TIEFENRAUSCH (rapture of the deep) is a multi-part exhibition dispersed throughout the city, a complex, multi- layered undertaking, a blend of art projects and museum objects, narratives drawn from everyday life and investigations phrased in terms of cultural scholarship, out-of-the-ordinary venues and totally pragmatic guided tours. The point of departure is the Museum of the Underworlds in the OK. In downtown Linz, TIEFENRAUSCH will be visible along Landstrasse, where red plastic pipes designed by Linz Art University students are replacing the conventional manhole covers. In the Aktienkeller, OK is staging a major international art exhibition on the subject of “Remembering – Forgetting.” Plus, TIEFENRAUSCH is offering an array of guided tours to underground sites that are usually off-limits to the general public: the system of tunnels built by the Nazis, drinking water reservoirs and the crypts of Old City churches. A multipart catalog is being issued in conjunction with this project. In the first volume, which premiered at the exhibition’s opening, cultural philosopher Thomas Macho touches on a broad spectrum of conceptions, locations and conditions subsumed under the heading of underworld. Volume 2 will be released in late June, and #3 at the finissage. -
