Greetings from your Social Chair! The Princeton Club of Georgia had a full calendar of events in 2015-16 and is looking forward to bringing back some old favorites as well as offering new experiences in 2016-17. A few of the highlights from last year were the Annual Kickoff Event at Fernbank; a High Museum tour of masterpieces from Vienna's Imperial Collections; a wine tasting event; a cappella performances by the Footnotes and the Katzenjammers; a Young Alumni potluck dinner; and our Annual Dinner featuring Associate Professor Hans Klein ’83.

We would love your feedback on current events and ideas for new events. We are listening! For the 2016-17 season, we are offering a “Cocktails & Chihuly” Kickoff Party at Atlanta Botanical Garden on October 6, 2016; a private Beltline Tour with Princeton alum Rob Brawner ’96; a reception with the Dean of the Graduate School at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead on October 26, 2016; the Princeton Triangle Show in Atlanta on January 30, 2017; an event at the High Museum; a wine tasting event; and, of course, the Annual Dinner at the Ansley Golf Club. We are also planning another service day at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and the Young Alumni Committee has a full slate of activities beginning with a happy hour at Monday Night Brewing on September 19.

If there is an expression of interest by enough members, we can plan to attend a concert by the Atlanta Sym- phony at the or the Atlanta Opera’s production of Puccini’s “Turandot” at the Cobb En- ergy Centre. If either of these ideas appeals to you, or if you have an idea for a trip to a museum (the High or other), please feel free to contact your Club President Beth Stahlman ‘89, Anna Dunn ‘07, or Arthur Kent ‘72.

We look forward to seeing you at many of these events, starting with our main attraction “Cocktails & Chi- huly” Kickoff Event at Atlanta Botanical Garden on October 6th!

ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR ANNUAL GIVING

Princetonians from the Atlanta Region continued to show their appreciation for the education and experiences that they received at Princeton by continuing to contribute significantly to Annual Giving. 553 alums from the Atlanta area contributed $338,549 to the Annual Giving Campaign that concluded this past June 30, and the participation rate of Atlanta-area alums (62%) was not only 3.6% higher than the overall participation rate for this year’s Campaign, but also higher than every other urban area with a large number of alums south of D.C. or south and west of Chicago.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN, and a special thanks to our Annual Giving Regional co-chairs, Bill Kaspers ’70 and Sakinah Jones ’00, as well as to Princeton’s National Annual Giving Chair, Louise (“Weezie”) Sams ’79, whose leadership and efforts were instrumental in achieving this year’s outstanding results. It Wouldn’t Be A Princeton Event If There Was No A Cappella Singing

We fully expect that in the year ahead, as in years past, one or more of the undergrad a cappella groups (of which there are now about 13 on campus) will be visiting Atlanta during one of the breaks in the upcoming academic calendar. In fact, the Nassoons have already informed us that they will be stopping in Atlanta during the week of March 18-26, while they are on their Southern Tour. So, in addition to the Triangle Show coming to Atlanta at the end of this coming January, don’t be surprised if you receive an email inviting you to a night of singing by one of the undergrad groups at an Atlanta-area alum’s home. These evenings have proven to be a great way to meet the undergrads whom our Annual Giving dollars are supporting, many of whom will be visiting Atlanta for the first time. The local group of alumni a cappella singers that Bill Kaspers ’70 has put together has received a number of requests; however, they are likely to sing at one or more of our Club’s events this year, anyway. Princeton Alums Continue Community Service Work

The PCGA sponsored a holiday-season gift drive during the 2015-2016 school year to benefit the Atlanta Mission. The Atlanta Mission is the city’s largest and longest-running provider of services to homeless men, women and children. Established in 1938, this Atlanta non-profit organization provides emergency shelter, temporary shelter, recovery programming, job attainment and transitional housing to more than 950 men, women and children daily. Atlanta Mission is a 501(c)(3) organization funded primarily by individual donations. Our generous alumni donated new clothing, toiletries, toys and gift cards to families in crisis. The PCGA Community Service Committee is especially grateful to Aixa Pascual ’88 for providing a drop-off location for donations.

We are currently planning a fall visit to the Atlanta Food Bank on November 1st. There are, also, ongoing volunteer opportunities at the Atlanta Missions’ four facilities. If you are interested in learning about additional opportunities to serve these organizations, including those that are suitable for younger children, please feel free to contact us.

As always, if you have a community service activity you would like the Committee to consider or a cause that is close to your heart, please let us know. We are always looking for new opportunities to serve.

Blessings, Karen Ruffin ’86 Community Service Chair [email protected]

2017 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award

The Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award Committee of the Princeton Club of Georgia will be accepting nominations this fall for the 2017 Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award. Unique to the PCGA, the Award was established in 1985 to honor Metro-Atlanta Area high school juniors who, through community involvement and personal initiative, best exemplify the ideals of community service and volunteerism espoused by Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the and 13th President of Princeton University.

The Committee will look for candidates who volunteer out of a passion to improve our community, not to fulfill school requirements or to build a resume, and for whom service is a part of his or her everyday life. Past winners have created their own service projects, have made long-term commitments to established community projects, or have taken existing projects to exceptional levels.

Upon selection of winners, the Committee will host an award presentation ceremony for the winners and their parents and school representatives at the later in 2017.

For more information, please email Committee Co-Chairs Justin Im ([email protected]) or Charlie Hurt ([email protected]).

"To promote harmony, understanding, and respect among people of different races by identifying and recognizing high school age students whose efforts have had a significant, positive effect on race relations in their schools or communities."

2016 Princeton Prize in Race Relations Recipients Honored

THE FUTURE will bring change. That is certain. For those of us who have been a part of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations (PPRR) for over 10 years now, we have learned that building good race relations is not just a nice thing to do, it is a necessity. Our best future depends on it. We have also learned that change does not come easily. Humans will press any advantage, and will not easily give them up. Scars do remain from our history. But rather than stewing in these known challenges to the national narrative, the PPRR chooses to reward the youth who have taken it upon themselves to “make America great again.” The embodiment of this passion is 2016 PPRR award winner Jordan Williams of North Atlanta H.S. In response to bubbling racial tension in his high school, Jordan founded “North Atlanta Together” and “Stronger Melanin,” two organizations that provided common ground for students to improve their racial environment. Certificates of Accomplishment were awarded to other students from North Atlanta H.S., The , Morrow H.S., McCallie School, , and Riverwood International Charter School. From dance to art and poetry, these youth have found many ways to communicate positivity. The future, in their hands, will be good.

The PPRR Awards ceremony was held May 5, 2016 at Troutman Sanders law firm. Our speaker was the Reverend Robert C. Wright, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Bishop Wright reminded us that as many of us get older, we become afraid of losing what we have. Therefore, it has always been the youth who propel us forward in these matters. “Leadership,” he stated, “is the capacity to mobilize people to address tough problems they would rather avoid.” Princeton is wise to identify and reward these young leaders. Many thanks again to Bob Edwards and Mark Newman of Troutman Sanders for hosting the awards ceremony and the members of the PPRR committee who serve faithfully… more are invited.
