2020 - 2021 Letter from the Athletic Director Dear Friends of UConn Avery Point :

Needless to say, a lot has changed in our world since I penned this letter for last year’s yearbook. However, I am excited to offer my greetings as we hit tip off for the 2020-21 basketball seasons at the University of ConnecticutAvery Point.

We know that this season will be different than years past, but the excitement is still prevalent and in some respects, probably even more palpable than before. Pointers Pointers Our basketball programs have achieved considerable success in the classroom, on the court and within our community over the course of the past several years. I expect all of those trends to continue here this season.

First, I would like to commend our basketball squads for their exceptional work in the classroom. During the 2019-20 academic year, both teams were honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association with the Team Academic Award. A year after posting the fourth-best team grade point average among all NJCAA programs, our men’s team finished in the top-15 nationally once again! A total of five student-athletes from our programs were also named to the NJCAA All-Academic Team, while the teams combined for 24 selections to the Region XXI Athletic Directors’ Honor Roll.

In addition, our programs have also served as ambassadors for UConn Avery Point and for Region XXI on the national stage. Carsen Keith was selected last fall to serve on the NJCAA Student-Athlete Council. Congrats to Carsen on this achievement!

We’re expecting big things on the court from our teams again this season. Our women’s team has qualified for the Region XXI final in each of the past three years and has claimed the Region XXI title and automatic berth to the NJCAA Division III Tournament in two of the last three seasons. Last year’s team was ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation and finished with a 19-9 record.

The 2019-20 season was a breakthrough campaign for our men’s team. The squad registered 16 wins and advanced to the semifinals of the Region XXI Tournament, where they fell to the eventual champion. The team also hosted a Region XXI Tournament contest and claimed a victory in the quarterfinals during this noteworthy campaign.

As we continue to navigate through this global pandemic, I am sure that we will continue to adjust and roll with the tide in the coming months. Nonetheless, we’re excited at the opportunity to return to action!

Thank you for your continued support of UConn Avery Point athletics. Go Pointers!

ADMISSIONS UConn is ranked in the Top 25 in the U.S. News & World Report annual collegiate rankings for the nation’s best public universities. One of the reasons for this prestigious award is the quality of students that the university attracts. Admissions criteria will vary depending upon the academic program the student is interested in. Students must apply online at uconn.admissions.edu using the Common Application and optional SAT or ACT should be sent directly from the College Board to the UConn Admissions Office in Storrs. UConn offers majors and minors in over 100 academic areas. To learn details about gaining admission into any program or to arrange a campus visit and tour, please contact the Avery Point Admissions Office at (860) 405-9026. STUDENT-ATHLETES Members of the athletic teams are recommended to successfully complete at least five classes each semester. The coaching staff will encourage and support all student-athletes through academic monitoring and mandatory study hours. Following the successful completion of two years (most majors) on the Avery Point campus, each student-athlete has the opportunity to transition to the main campus in Storrs or to transfer to another four-year institution. The coaching staff believes that all student-athletes are “students first.” Each recruit must be dedicated to the program, themselves and the rigors of academia. Our student-athletes typically maintain a course load of at least 15 credits during each semester, participate in an off-season conditioning program, help in fundraising, and participate in numerous volunteer programs. OPPONENTS Athletic teams at UConn Avery Point compete in the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Baseball competes at the Division II level while Men’s and Women’s Basketball participates in Division III. We play a schedule in Region XXI of the NJCAA. Included in our schedule are games against teams like Roxbury CC, Gateway CC, CCRI, Massasoit CC, Monroe College, Mercer CC, Genesee CC, Brookdale CC (NJ), Sullivan County CC, and Jamestown CC. We play a rigorous schedule to prepare us for the post-season and also for the benefit of our players who wish to transfer. Scrimmages in the past have been against NCAA schools. LOCAL COMMUNITY The University of Connecticut at Avery Point is located approximately three miles from downtown Groton. This town of approximately 30,000 has multiple grocery stores, fast food restaurants, shopping centers, and nice restaurants. It is also only a few minutes from the Crystal Mall in Waterford, 45 minutes from Providence and an

hour and a half from Boston. Basketball

Basketball 2020 - 2021 Women’s Basketball 2020 - 21 Season Preview

The UConn Avery Point women’s basketball team is ready to begin what they expect to be a highly successful 2020-21 season. The Pointers will return three members of the 2019-20 squad who were the runners-up in the Region XXI championship game a year ago, Carsen Keith, Sarah Wisniewski and Nicole Cabusao. Keith is a strong inside presence and operates well in the high post and Wisniewski is a strong and extremely athletic all-around player who can score, defend, Pointers rebound and make plays for her teammates. Rounding out the returners is Nicole Cabusao, who brings fantastic energy off the bench and can provide a spark on both ends of the floor. The Pointers will welcome five newcomers to the program in 2020-21. Joining the backcourt will be Julia Fenn, Jade Redo and Sam Caster. Fenn brings a strong skills package and a great toughness element to the group. Redo is a knockdown shooter and can bring a lot to the team defense. Caster will provide a balanced on-court presence with the ability to shoot the ball well. The frontcourt newcomer Adeline Smith is a very versatile player with great length and athleticism and a strong inside-out game. She will be joined by Jelina Kolb, a ferocious competitor and rebounder. The Pointers are looking forward to competition in this non-traditional 2020-21 campaign. Basketball

UConn Avery Point Women’s Basketball is always looking for people interested in becoming friends of our program. In looking to continue to build success in the program, we are reaching out to individuals and businesses looking to provide donations to the program. What your donations will do: • Provide team equipment, apparel, and uniforms to the players. • Increased travel budget to allow a stronger game schedule and travel larger radius. • Create greater opportunities for the players to be visible to NCAA programs interested in them. Benefits of being a donor: • An affiliation with the University of Connecticut as a donor/benefactor to the school. • Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. • Donations are made to the UConn Foundation, and will directly benefit the basketball program at UCAP.
