Last autumn important habitat management work was carried out in what is considered to be a rare community and habitat at Eastrington Ponds. This Sphagnum-dominated basin mire habitat has developed in one of the small borrow pits close to the embankment of the former Hull-Barnsley railway line.

Most of the ponds on the nature reserve are typically eutrophic, which describes a body of water rich in nutrients. The presence of the Sphagnum mire community on the reserve is particularly interesting as it has developed in an isolated, naturally eutrophic, post-industrial water body. The timescale for the development of this type of “embryonic bog” is about 150 years. The Eastrington mire has developed within a similar timeframe; work on the Hull - Barnsley railway began in 1881.

The habitat is fragile and requires careful management if it is to survive. The basin mire is home to specialist aquatic and semi aquatic species. In particular, the reed- beetle which is found on cotton-grass has been located on the reserve. This species of beetle is now extinct on Thorne and Hatfield Moors, and to find it at Eastrington Ponds is very important.

It is vital that the Sphagnum mire is managed correctly, and the aim of the recent management was to remove all willow from the Sphagnum raft. If left to grow the willow would eventually shade out the Sphagnum and dry out the mire. Without this intervention the habitat would be lost to willow invasion and important species lost to the reserve forever.

DECEMBER 38 Walking for Health

‘Walking the way to Health’ was an initiative introduced by the British Heart Foundation and the Countryside Agency in October 2000. Its aim is to encourage people to take up walking as a way of improving physical health and mental well being. The initiative aims to improve the health and fitness of more than a million people, especially those who do little exercise or who live in areas of poor health.

East Riding of Yorkshire first introduced the scheme in 2004 and is a joint venture between the Sport and Play Development Service and Leisure Services.

The scheme is a series of free guided walks for all ages and abilities, aimed at anyone who has an interest in walking or wants to slowly introduce exercise into their daily routine as part of rehabilitation from illness, injury or to get fit.

The current recommendation for physical activity is just 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity activity. That is all it takes to feel the difference. We offer a range of walks starting from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The most important thing is that you start where you are at a gradually build up to the longer walks.

Walking can: • Make you feel good • Give you more energy • Reduces stress and help you sleep better • Keep your heart strong and reduce blood pressure • Help to manage your weight

Walking is almost perfect exercise, requiring no expense, almost anyone can do it, it can be done anywhere at any time, it is the best way for people from all walks of life to become more active gradually.

All you need are a good pair of shoes, that are comfortable, provide good support and don’t cause blisters. Loose fitting clothing allows you to move more freely. Wear thin layers rather than heavy clothing. If it’s a hot day take a bottle of water.

Main message: Breathe a little faster – feel warmer – have a slightly faster heart beat

What better way to enjoy your natural environment and meet new people! For more information about all the walks in the East Riding please contact Laura Telfer on (01482) 392527 or [email protected]
