A Word from Fr. Ed, Pastor of Notre Dame

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The American Catholic spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, whom Pope Francis held up as a model of American Catholic life in his address to the United States Congress, wrote:

The Mystery of Christ is timeless: but we enter into it by consecrating to Him the little part that is ours of history and of time. It is by the Liturgy and its ascetic fulfilment that we do so. This is the secret of the : they contain in themselves all that matters to a Christian of the history of the world, because in a mysterious and quasi-sacramental manner, by virtue of their intimate connection with the Sacrifice of the Mass, the salvation of the world is all worked out in them. Breviary, , and Missal, charged with the grandeur of the Word of God, contain the mighty secret of Christ’s spiritual victory. The secret is placed in the hands of each Christ. It only needs to be discovered and fulfilled in our own lives (Bread in the Wilderness, Burns and Oates, 1954/1976, p. 82).

That is what this prayer book is all about. The Liturgy of the Hours is a sacred way in which to consecrate to the Lord “the little part that is ours of history and of time.” The Liturgy of the Hours is a unique and privileged way in which single persons, spouses, and families can consecrate their love for one another to . Through praying the Liturgy of the Hours in faith and hope, we participate fully in God’s ever-ongoing re-creation of the world and give ever- ongoing gratitude to him for life, love, his light, and the true liberty Christ won for us in his Incarnation, death and Resurrection. This prayer book was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our health is threatened, day-to-day living “interrupted” staying safer at home and socially distanced, our days boring with nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no one to see. Precisely, though, the Lord is calling us not to distance socially from him and to love one another through Scripture, prayer, and the service we extend to our spouses, families, and loved ones. I invite you to take up this form of prayer – this sacred liturgy – which more than any other connects us to the and consecrates that little part of history and time that is ours to our Father in Heaven, through his Son, Jesus, by the unseen and unfelt grace of their Holy Spirit, who breathes ever so sweetly over the face of the earth. Father Ed

How to Use This Booklet

St. Pope Paul VI, in his introduction to the Liturgy of the Hours, wrote:

The atmosphere of the Liturgy of the Hours must come to life in all of us, so that Scripture may indeed become the chief source of all Christian prayer. In particular, the praying of the psalms, which continually ponders and proclaims the action of God in the history of salvation, must be embraced with new warmth by the people of God. The whole life of the faithful, hour by hour during day and night, is a kind of leitourgia or public service, in which the faithful give themselves over to the ministry of love toward God and men, identifying themselves with the action of Christ, who by his life and self-offering sanctified the life of all mankind. . . For this reason, the Hours are recommended to all Christ’s faithful members. . .”

These are beautiful words. But perhaps until now you never heard of the Liturgy of the Hours. Maybe you have heard about them, but you thought such prayer was just for priests and nuns. You are wondering why it is so important to pray them if no one has taught you to do so and how until now. So now you are wondering: “How does one go about praying the Liturgy of the Hours?” First, remember that when you pray the Liturgy of the Hours, you are praying with Christ and in his own voice, together with every member of his church. Christ prayed the psalms, loved the psalms, and taught the psalms. He loves you so much he not only continues to intercede for you at his Father’s right hand, but invites you to pray with him for all who and that is dear to you. Do not be overwhelmed by the thought of figuring out how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. It is quite simple and becomes routine (in a good way) after just a few experiences. Our parish Church at Home presentation of this sacred prayer, while maintaining the form of the prayer as it is prayed by those whom the church binds to pray it daily (clerics, monks, nuns, etc.), is adapted and designed for spouses, families, and single people to pray together. The entire booklet of the parish’s Liturgy of the Hours is available on the Notre Dame Parish website (www.DenverNotreDame.org). Families are encouraged to copy it so that each member has his/her own from which to pray.

1) Choose the days and the time of day that the praying community – your family, small Christian community, or even your neighbors and you (non- Catholics, too, are encouraged to pray this prayer with us) – will gather together for prayer. At a minimum, pray all three of the Liturgy of the Hours (Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer) on Sunday, contributing to keeping holy the Day of the Lord. Alternatively, choose any given day or days you will pray together at least one of the prayers. For example, a 7

couple or family may decide to pray only Night Prayer every day or to pray any one or all of the hours on a special day, for example, on the parents’ marriage anniversary, a birthday of a family member, the anniversary of a loved one’s death, a special day in a family member’s life (first day of school, moving home to start college, joining the military, etc.). How special it is to pray the Liturgy of the Hours on your spouse’s birthday! Imagine what it says to your children to do so on theirs! It is important to build the Liturgy of the Hours into your daily or weekly schedule, making it a regular and routine part of what you do on any given day. Make every effort to keep this appointment of prayer with the Lord and one another. After a while, praying the Liturgy of the Hours will be eagerly anticipated and looked forward to for the rest, peace, communion, and care it brings into the lives of those who pray it.

2) Next, identify one member of the praying community to lead the prayer as “Leader;” the others pray as “All.” Each’s part is marked throughout the text. The only criterion for being the leader is that one be able to read. One may be the leader for a whole week, on a special day, etc.

3) Divide the family into two “choirs.” These choirs, for example, might be the husband and wife, the parents and the children, the men/boys and women/girls. Each of the choirs alternates the recitation of the psalms in what is called “choir-style:” one side recites verse 1, the other verse 2, etc.

4) The leader maintains the pace of the prayer’s recitation. It is important that the prayer not be hurried or rushed. For example, a moment or two of silence is appropriate between each of the psalms, after the reading, or between the voicing of the intentions and the Our Father. Regarding the latter, the church offers alternative intercessions for Evening Prayer, which the leader may choose to pray, and which are included in the text.

5) The canticles for Morning Prayer (Canticle of Zechariah) and Evening Prayer (Canticle of Mary) are reprinted on the inside covers of the booklet. This will require some page flipping as one moves between the prayer itself and the canticle, but will be easily accomplished after a few experiences.

Finally, do not worry about getting it perfect or that everyone in the family is able to pay attention through the prayer. As a mother is more pleased with the simple dandelion bouquet her child gives her on Mother’s Day than the most expensive bouquet of roses ordered online, so too is our heavenly Father more pleased with our daily prayer offered simply than perfect prayer offered without heart.
